It is hard to believe it is already the start of another year. As 2017 begins I wish
everyone a cheery new year full of happiness and success. I would also like to pass on three words I
believe are important to be happy and successful, whether that be at school, work, or life.
The top word on my list is respect. We often have conversations at our house about the
Golden Rule. We talk how we should treat one another and how challenging this can be when we
disagree with someone. My advice is instead of making a negative comment to someone is to be the
bigger person. Motivational speaker Wayne Dyer says it this way, “How people treat you is their
karma – How you react is yours.” If we all learn how to treat one another respectfully, everything
else should be easy.
Attendance is next on my list. Some people may not think this is
a big deal, but attendance at school or work is not a priority for all
people, and in my book this is extremely sad. From the school
perspective I wish people understood that missing school for any
amount of time can have a negative impact on a student’s learning. It is
easier for students to complete work and understand concepts when
they are at school. Make attendance a priority.
The final word is support. Most importantly, students
need support from their parents. Believe it or not, parents are
who students look to each day to help them make good
decisions; there are times they may disagree with the advice
given to them, but in the end they will come around and
appreciate the guidance given to them.
My last bit of advice for whatever it is worth, is to always take time for yourself! People may
not believe this last piece is important, but speaking from experience I do believe in it. A person
feels better about themselves if they take the time to do something they enjoy and if you feel better
about yourself then it is easier to have a positive attitude and to be passionate about what you are
doing.
“Success is not an accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and
most of all, love of what you are doing.” Pelé
Mrs.Reiser High School Principal
“Most iMportantly,
students need
support from
their parents.”

The theme for this year’s project is Animal Allies.
Some of the current projects are new flea and tick
collars which Team 1 is making. Team 2 is making an im-
proved dog harness.
The purpose of this theme is to identify the prob-
lem when people and animals interact together. Also,
students need to design a solution that makes the inter-
action better for the animals, the people, or both. Final-
ly, the members are to share their ideas with others.
The competitions are in the following towns:
Regionals— Devils Lake January 11th
State— Grand Forks February 4th

It’s “OK to Say No”
By Dr. Charles Fay
“Is it really ok to say no to my child?”
In the mid 1960's a few parenting "experts" began to question whether we ought to say this word to our children. Some worried that it would damage kids' self-concepts. Others seemed
concerned that it'd stifle creativity.
Kids need to hear "No" from time to time.
Say "No" only when you can back it up with meaningful actions.
When we say "no" without holding our children accountable, we teach them that "no"
really means "yes."
Say "No" only when you can do so without anger and frustration.
Challenging kids love to see our faces turn red!
Say "No" only when it doesn’t rob your child of a good learning experience.
If a child is about to do something that’s not dangerous…but will backfire for them…it's
often wiser to allow them to learn from their mistake instead of saying "No."
Say “No” as often as necessary yet as infrequently as possible.
"No" is a critically important parenting tool that wears out if it's used too often. Save it
for times it's really needed.
