WHAT IS A SUPERCLUSTER?

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT

FROM A CLUSTER?

WHY DO WE CARE?

What is a cluster?

Clusters are geographic concentrations of interconnected companies,

specialized suppliers, service providers, firms in related industries, and

associated institutions (e.g. universities, standards agencies, trade

associations) in a particular field that compete but also cooperate.

What is a Supercluster?

A geographical region that is home to an especially strong industrial

cluster or clusters linked through their shared reliance on specialized

inputs, including technologies, talent and infrastructure.

As compared to smaller or single-sector clusters, these innovation

hotbeds benefit from stronger connections between firms and research

talent, a long-term competitive advantage, global brand recognition,

and an outsized impact on job creation and economic growth (GDP).

As defined by Government of Canada

• Achieved 2 of 3 original goals

• Strengthened networks and identified

new opportunities

• Put mining on federal agenda

• Sudbury squarely on innovation

radar

Page 41: Superclusters - EDACedac.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/IanWood-EDAC... · How Greater Sudbury stopped worrying and learned to love the program Ian Wood Director of Economic Development

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

Take a chance

Identify goals and stick to them

Build serious networks

Leverage opportunities

All winning superclusters are required to

be open to new partnerships and technologies.

Do you have companies that

can take advantage?

Is there a related cluster in your city or region

that should be linked?

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
