It’s hard to believe that nearly three months of this Rotary year will be over in just a few days! So much has happened in a very short period of time. Official visits have begun and have been tremendously exciting. I am so impressed by the quality and scope of projects that have been demonstrated by Rotarians in all 31 clubs that I have visited. Smiles have been everywhere. They have been on the faces of Rotarians and guests as well as on cakes, balloons, candy, mugs, vases and even in songs. We have an unofficial count of 296,424 smiles recorded to date (1,611 Rotarians x 2 smiles per day x 92 days) so we are currently slightly ahead of schedule. Keep those smiles coming! The 32nd Annual District Governor’s Golf Outing (DGGO) at Fox Hills Golf Course has been recorded in the history books. Special thanks to the DGGO Co-Chairs PDG Kim Towar and Dave Colton! The event was successful in large part due to their leadership, guidance and hard work. Rotary’s youth programs provide young people an opportunity to appreciate the concept of “Service Above Self” and then put it to work in their own lives. We are all very pleased with the significant growth of membership in this avenue of service. The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program for high school students will be held at Schoolcraft Community College on November 14-16, 2013. You can register students online by going to the District website.

You are cordially invited to attend the First Annual Witches and Wizards Party on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Reservations are essential and can be made by registering online by going to the District website or by calling 313-561-1683. All proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the new District 6400 Water Fund that was recently created by PDG Jennifer Jones and PP Nick Krayacich. Hope you can join us for an evening of fun and fellowship!

On October 17th, we will be holding the District Membership/Foundation/Public Image event at the Schoolcraft College VistaTech Center. You can register online by going to the District website. This program is for all Rotarians and will focus on our next steps as we move forward this year.

Finally, our District Conference will be held on May 8-11, 2014 at the beautiful Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. I hope that each and every one of you will be able to join us for a relaxing weekend as we share our amazing stories about how we “engaged Rotary” and “changed lives.” If you have not already signed up for this event, you may register online by going to the District website. If you have questions, please contact (a) District Conference Co-Chairs PDG Lawrence Wright or William Matakas or (b) District Conference Registrars PDG Bruce or Sue Goldsen.

Thanks for all you do to make the world a better place!

Smilingly yours, Donna

RECORD BREAKING NEWS!A round of applause please… our 2012-13 contributions to the Annual Fund reached an all-time high, exceeding US$115 million for the first time ever! Achieving annual contributions of this magnitude is a reflection of the extraordinary work of Rotary leaders, like you, around the world. Thank you!

Play BallRotarians love baseball and proof positive at a recent Detroit Tigers Game. The Rotary Club of Westland purchased a Comerica Park Suite for an August game and sold raffle tickets to win it. They exceeded their $15,000 sales goal and after deducting expenses, raised nearly $14,000 with this project!

One of the great things about a fundraiser like this is that there is broad participation (we let other clubs and organizations sell them too and kept $4 per $10 ticket sold) taking some of the financial burden off of many of our usual business sponsors.

Please spread the word about how every Rotarian can make an

impact in their communities and around the world, by supporting our Rotary Foundation every year. With your help, we can reach

our visionary goal of US$120 million by 30 June 2014.

Making Rotary Stronger What is Rotary? Have you ever struggled with an answer to that question? You’re not alone. How do you describe an organization that is so many things to so many different people? It turns out that we had the answer all along.

In research conducted over the past two years, we heard the same message from our members: Rotary brings together friends, family, and community leaders to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.

To help carry that message into the 21st century, a fresh, modern look and inspiring and inviting voice was created. You can see these changes in Rotary’s redesigned website and publications like Connect for Good and Rotary Leader. It includes a new signature (logo) and specific fonts and colors for digital and print media. Our voice is more action-oriented focusing on the why rather than the how: Join for our community. Stay for the world.

The next step is incorporating our new visual identity into our club and district communications. You’ll find everything you need to update your website, newsletters, and brochures in Tell Rotary’s Story voice and visual identity guide. Our new signature and mark of excellence are available for download. And more tools and resources are being planned.

We know these changes won’t happen overnight, but every little thing we do – from Facebook posts to fundraising posters – that presents a cohesive, consistent, and contemporary Rotary story will help strengthen Rotary’s image and our ability to engage the public and our members.

World Polio Day – Be a Part!If you are a supporter of Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio – or simply want to learn more about it – you won’t want to miss World Polio Day: Making History, a special Livestream event presented by Rotary and Northwestern University’s Center for Global Health, beginning at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Oct. 24 (World Polio Day).

This 90-minute program before a live audience at Northwestern’s John Hughes Auditorium in downtown Chicago, brings together a panel of experts to discuss the progress of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative -- the ambitious public-private partnership spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with additional support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – and the many ways that members of the general public can help make history by supporting the final push needed to end polio forever.

Join in with leaders from around the world and hear the discussion between speakers Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO assistant director-general for polio, emergencies and country collaboration; Dr. Robert Murphy, director of the Center for Global Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; and polio survivor and world-class Paralympian Dennis Ogbe, an ambassador for the United Nations Foundation’sShot@Lifecampaigntopromotechildhoodimmunizations.

Rotary District 6400 Seeks Entrepreneurs, especially women, in SW Detroit for LaunchDETROIT, a Micro-Loan ProgramLaunchDETROIT, a micro-loan program developed by Rotary District 6400, recently hosted an informational open house for budding entrepreneurs and small businesses in Detroit.

LaunchDETROIT is a multi-pronged program that offers qualifying entrepreneurs a combination of free business training, micro loans of $1,000 to $2,500, assigned business mentors and networking opportunities.

With the goal to “revitalize local communities one entrepreneur at a time,” LaunchDETROIT is starting with a pilot program in southwest Detroit, focusing on businesses and entrepreneurs, especially women, who can benefit from the business and financial resources the program offers.

“Our mission is to support and develop small businesses in under-resourced communities in the Detroit region,” said Rotarian Lawrence Wright, president of the LaunchDETROIT initiative.

QualifyingapplicantswillreceivebusinesstrainingprovidedbyinstructorsfromBakerCollegeduringfive, threehourclasses, held once a week. Upon completion of business training and business plan presentations, the LaunchDETROIT selection committee will interview candidates for the micro-loans and assign a business mentor to each.

Successful candidates must have a business product or service that will enable them to repay their loan within one year through weekly installments. PNC Bank has offered its services to set up LaunchDETROIT’s account that enables candidates to make regular loan payments.

Wright added, “A lot of eyes are on Detroit right now, and we’ve received strong support from Rotary Clubs in our district along with a great deal of interest from local churches, community organizations and others interested in helping entrepreneurs in Detroit succeed.”

An online application is also available at www.LaunchDetroit.org. The deadline to apply for the pilot program is Friday, October 4, 2013.

LaunchDetroit is a non-profit program powered by Rotary District 6400, serving southeast Michigan and southwestOntario.Questionsmaybeemailedtocontact@LaunchDetroit.org.
