INTRODUCTION

This is a revised version of AN ANNOTATED LIST OF CURRENTLY PUBLISHED

MARITIME PERIODICALS published in 1991 by a team of librarians at the Stephen B. LuceLibrary as a special project funded by the NYS/UUP Professional Development and Quality ofWorking Life Committee.

The need for this type of maritime focused periodical list remains the same as it was a

decade ago, which was expressed in the preface of the previous publication. Added to thisrevised edition are the e-mail addresses and web-site URLs of publishers when they are known.Efforts will be made in the future to add more e-mail and web-site addresses as more publishers

develop their own electronic access points.

PREFACE

The need for an Annotated List of Currently Published Maritime Periodicals (List),classified by subject, has become more apparent to the reference librarians at the Stephen B.

Luce Library as the collection developed into a major resource center in the maritime field.There are frequent requests from graduate and undergraduate students as well as researchers for amaritime serials directory, for a list of magazines dealing with maritime transportation research,

for the names of journals dealing with shipbuilding, containerization, etc.

The reference staff decided that the compilation of a compact list of maritime related periodicals which included the core of scholarly and trade journal relating to the industry wouldsatisfy many of these user requests. A basic plan was developed for a publication with a target

audience of adult library users who needed a guide to maritime industry periodicals.

The reference librarians were able to turn this plan into a project which led to this

publication with the support of the college administration and the Head Librarian, RichardCorson. A grant was obtained from the New York State/United University Professions

“Professional Development and Quality of Working Life Committee” to develop this referencetool.

The final drafting of the List was carried out during the summer of 1991. I wish toexpress my genuine appreciation to two colleagues, Filomena Magavero and Richard Corson not

only for their encouragement and guidance, but also to Mrs. Magavero for outlining the subjectheadings and Mr. Richard Corson for proofreading.

Although this project involved several librarians, responsibility for any editorial errors or

omissions rests with me as project director and editor.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

SCOPE: The magazines selected are mainly from the United States and United

Kingdom, but also include major representative titles from fifteen other nations whose texts are

in English. Included in the Annotated List of Currently Published Maritime Periodicals (List)are both trade and scholarly journals considered to be, in the editor’s view, representative coreresearch materials in the maritime industry field. In-house publications such as house organs and promotional newsletters, therefore, are excluded except for a few examples. A few magazines

which are non-core maritime industry but very useful for maritime related subjects are alsoincluded. Magazines dealing with oceanography, boats and boating are prime examples of these

categories.

SOURCES: In compiling the List, the following information sources were consulted:

• Information obtained directly from publishers through a survey instrument

administered by the editor.

• Periodical Directory of Stephen B. Luce Library, (SUNY Maritime College)

• Ulrich’s International Periodical Directory. (Bowker)

• Serials Directory.

• The Standard Periodical Directory. (Oxbridge Communications)

LAYOUT: This List consists of two major sections: 1) alphabetical title list withannotations; 2) classified subject list with titles. By consulting the classified list, one can easilyidentify a group of magazines under a particular subject. Magazines which deal with more than

one subject are listed under the subject headings provided by various publishers in the surveysheets that were received. When a reader wishes to find out more about magazines, he or she cansimply turn to the alphabetical title of magazines where one can have access to basic

bibliographic information on the title.

CITATION STRUCTURE: The bibliographic elements of each entry inc lude the

title of the magazine with the immediate previous title, if any, in parenthesis, frequency of publication, volume number with year of the first publication, index sources where the magazine

is indexed, country code, brief annotation, special issues, if any. Excluded are items that aremost likely to vary with times e.g., subscription rate, editors, and address of publication.Readers wishing to have this information are referred to the most current edition of the periodical

directories cited above.
