have been devastating,” she said. But after reaching the swim

finish with full feeling in her legs, itwas the start of a dreamperformance.

The 24-year-old from Aroonawent faster in Hawaii than herinaugural Ironman outing at PortMacquarie earlier this year, goingsix minutes quicker over theworld’s toughest 3.8km swim,180km bike and 42.2km runcourse.

Kierra finished in 10:44:17 toclaim fourth in the women’s 18-24age category. Her 1:07:30 swimsaw her come out of the water in12th, climbing one rank with a bikeeffort of 6:01:43, but then ran herway onto the top-five podium witha 3:28:36 marathon.

“I went into the race without anytime expectations, I simply wantedto enjoy the moments, soak upthe experience and smile evenwhen it got tough,” she said

“Coming down the hill into townyou couldn’t wipe the smile off myface. The Tribe Ferrosapien (club)high-fived me and then in thefinish chute my family and bestfriend were there cheering loudlyas I finished. It was the mostmemorable feeling.”

The performance has ignitedfresh opportunities for theyoungster.

Since returning from Hawaii, herrecovery has been impressive and, together with coach Bruce Thiele, has begun mapping out a plan fora return to Kona.

She’ll undertake the Geelong70.3 in February to get back intoracing, before returning to PortMacquaire in her bid to qualify fora return to the Ironman WorldChampionship.

“I had a number people say if

you can run under a 3:30 for themarathon, if you want to go pro ina few years that is within reach,”she said.

“That would be an awesomething to get through, and I wouldlike to give that a crack down thetrack.”

The Coast’s fastest age grouperwas Richard Thompson. Thefather of one from Kiel Mountainmanaged a top 10 finish in the30-34 men with an effort of9:17:39.

Beerwah’s Damien Collins had

the most memorable finish. After ashoulder injury during Septembersaw him make an 11th hourdecision to compete, he thenpromptly did a “shoey”, drinkingbeer out of his Hoka Clifton.

The victory celebration hasbecome uniquely Australian anddoing it, he followed in thefootsteps of Australian Formula 1ace Daniel Ricciardo, who hasmade it somewhat of a signaturemove.

“Last year I did one after therace...but in the hotel room,” hesaid. “The catchers were trying tousher me into recovery. I said ‘mymissus is getting me a beer so Ican drink it out of my shoe, do you

want to see that?’”They did, and Damien now has

his own slice of Ironman history. It will be his last appearance at

Hawaii for some time, as he is nowapplying for his pro card.

“I have no idea what I am goingto do next year,” he said. “I justwant to get healthy. I’ve spent theentire year racing injured.”

Also producing an impressivefinish was Coolum’s JasonCheshire, who fell off his bike twomonths before Kona after hitting akangaroo.

Despite limited swim and runtraining, the owner of InfinitNutrition still finished in arespectable sub 11-hour time.

SUBSTANCE and style is themantra for Renault with its newMegane hatch.

With prices starting from$22,490, the French marque islooking for conquest sales as itpushes the message of beingpremium, but without the pricetag.

There’s little doubt this hatchoffers some head-turning design.

Some Renaults of the past havebeen polarising, yet this fourth geneffort is a departure from thebig-bummed style of a decadeago, displaying more stylish lineswhich is an extension of the DNAfound in the lovely little Clio.

For starters there are twoturbocharged four-cylinder petrolengines, with wagon and sedanversions to arrive next year.

This hatch derivative will be thevolume seller, with the rangetopping GT-Line ($32,490) andmost potent GT ($38,490)expected to be the most popular.

Renault has evolved into a nicheoffering, although with themarketing beginning to pushpricing and a strong dealerdistribution the marque’s hierarchybelieves there is a strong case forgrowth.ComfortThere is a sizable divide betweenthe base Life and Zen models fromthe GT duo.

Entry-level buying can feelbereft of glamour, with some hardplastics and vacant looking dashspaces spoiling the party, althoughcabin space has been improvedwith a longer wheelbase (distancebetween front and rear wheels)and greater overall length.

All models come with a colourseven-inch touch-screen andmost operations arestraight-forward…with a fewFrench caveats. Turning on thecruise control is done via aconsole-mounted switch and thestereo controls sit on a stalkbehind the steering wheel.

Adults can fit in the rear, eventhough up around 180cm, but thespace under the front pews is tightfor feet.On the roadSprightly off the mark, the 1.2-litreturbocharged petrol engine won’thave you languishing at the lights.

It’s the engine of choice in threeof the four specifications, and feelsmuch quicker than the standstill to100kmh time of 10.3 secondsdictates. Key to that is havingpeak torque at just 2000rpm.

Our test drives were across

some of the worst roads availablein NSW and Queensland, yet theMegane managed to offerreasonable ride comfort and cut aswathe through some seriouslytwisty and hilly terrain.

There was some wind noise, but the Megane settled well overchallenging undulations, potholesand dips.

When it came to therange-topping GT, it’s a noticeablystronger beast in acceleration andbraking. Aided by four-wheelsteering, it ripped throughhinterland terrain withconsummate ease backed by thepunchier turbo four-potter todeliver a stirring drive. What do you get?Life gets rear camera and rearparking sensors, tyre pressuremonitoring system, R-LINK2multimedia system withseven-inch touch-screen anddigital radio, leather steeringwheel, dual-zone climate controlair con, auto headlights andwipers, front LED DaytimeRunning Lights, 16-inch steelwheels with a full size temporaryspare wheel (a rarity nowadays).

Jump up into the Zen and youget Edge LED Daytime RunningLights, 16 inch alloys, sat nav, frontparking sensors, electric parkbrake,

You can add a $1990 sunroofpack, which also includes a sunvisor with light and auto dimmingrearview mirror, on both thosevariants.

When you get into the GT-Linethings get more luxurious, safetykit includes Blind Sport Warning, automated parking, electricsunroof, colour TFT instrumentcluster, five drive modes, leathertrimmed seats, Nappa leathersteering wheel, heated front seatsand 17-inch alloys (you can gets18s for $900).

When it comes to therange-topping GT, you get thefour-wheel steering, launchcontrol, sport suspension andbrakes, dual chrome exhaust, steering wheel paddle shifters, alloy pedals, 18-inch alloys, alcantara leather with bluehighlights.

The $1990 Premium Pack onGT and GF-Line includes PureVision LED headlights, 8.7 inchportrait orientation multimediasystem with 12-speaker Bose

stereo.When Renault has its own

R-Link system, it does go withoutsmartphone mirroring devisesAndroid Auto and Apple Carplaywhich have becomecommonplace in the latestofferings.Running costsFuel consumption should be in therealm of seven litres for every100km for all models (although outspirited testing saw the figurecloser to 10). They do, however, run on the more expensive 95octane unleaded.PracticalityPop the boot and there’s acavernous space, with the 434litres surpassing a Mazda3 (408),VW Golf (380) and Toyota Corolla(360).

It grows to 1247 with the seatsdown, which means it beats somecompact SUVs like the HondaHR-V, which is great for cartingbikes, boards and otherequipment.

There are two (albeit shallow)cup holders in the console, and anexcellent space in front of theshifter close to USB and 12-voltports that is perfect for yoursmartphone.

French hatch is back in style

THREE-time Noosa Triathlonchampion Ashleigh Gentle is set toheadline an all-star field for thismonth’s Noosa Triathlon.

The 25-year-old Rio Olympian, who is eighth on the ITU pointslist, should face a stern test fromlast year’s runner-up CharlotteMcShane.

The 26-year-old was the bestplaced Australian in this year’sWorld Triathlon Series (eighth).

Chile’s Barbara Riveros, whowas fifth at Rio, and New ZealandOlympian Nicky Samuels are alsoset to compete.

Amid the men’s field, Australia’sRyan Bailie and Ryan Fisher arelikely to lace-up, after competingat the Games this year.

Ryan was 10th in Rio, seventhon the ITU points list and eighth onthe world series.

Young compatriot and worldnumber 13 Jacob Birtwhistle is setto challenge them over the 1.5kmswim, 40km ride, 10km run whileDan Wilson is also set to compete.

Race director Rebecca VanPooss believes it will be ahotly-contested race.

“It’s exciting...we have thehighest prizemoney for standarddistance triathlons in Australia sothe elites definitely come out forit,” she said. “It’s the end of theEuropean season so they;rehading back to Australia and theAussies love to race at Noosa tofinish off their year.”

More elite athletes will be on thestart line but Van Pooss wasparticularly pleased to seeAshleigh put her hand up.

“We’re really happy she’sracing,” she said.

“For a short period of time wethough she might racingsomewhere else but she’sconfirmed she will be in Noosaand she’s pretty excited to begoing for three in a row.”

Ashleigh has won in 2012, 2014and 2015 and another win wouldsee her close in on EmmaSnowsill’s mark of five wins in thewomen’s event and join the Noosaresident as the only women tohave won the race three times in arow.

The race is set to again getunderway at Noosa Main Beach, after last year’s inaugural oceanswim start proved a success. “Theonly negative comment was thatpeople started swimming offcourse because they were lookingat the fish so that’s pretty good

negative feedback as far as wereconcerned,” Van Pooss said.

About 8000 people will takepart in the Noosa Triathlon withabout 12,000 taking part in eventsacross the festival.

“Noosa Triathlon is one ofNoosa’s signature events and the2015 event saw a significantchange with the swim leg of theevent move to Noosa’s iconicMain Beach, showcasing one ofNoosa’s key assets and one of thebest coastal and aquaticexperiences in Australia.”
