Letter from PresidentLetter from Chairman

Welcome to the City of Sunrise, one of the most progressive and vibrant cities in South Florida. Home to more than 90,000 residents and host to several million national and international visitors each year, Sunrise is the 21st largest municipality in Florida.

Despite international economic challenges, our City continues to grow! Over the past five years alone, more than 140 corporations have se-lected Sunrise as their home, and businesses that are already situated in this City continue to expand and invest in the area. We have also become an international destination for industry and technology head-quarters.

The Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1975, has ex-perienced exponential growth over the past two years that has mir-rored our namesake City’s positive direction. We’re on our way up! Our Back to Basics approach has allowed us to rebuild the Chamber into one of the premiere business organizations in the area. We are now a stronger and more effective organization that is working harder than ever for You, our members.

Our mission is to improve business relations through networking, edu-cation and marketing. Our membership is diverse, strong, and involved. Through the Chamber, our members and non-members alike are pre-sented with numerous chances each month to showcase their busi-nesses, give back to the community, and work together for a common purpose. With many opportunities ranging from committee work, to ambassador involvement and even taking part on the Board of Direc-tors, our membership is kept busy creating an environment intended to bring success to our community.

We are also working to develop strong alliances with other area Cham-bers of Commerce, and Government agencies as well as business and international trade organizations to help stimulate economic develop-ment across South Florida that will positively impact our business com-munity.

It is truly my pleasure to serve as this year’s Chairman of the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce. I am deeply committed to serving the position and working with all of you over the next year to continue on our path to making this the greatest chamber anywhere.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you have input or ideas that would help further our mission….because together we can make it all happen.

With warm regards,

Liron Offir, Esq.Chairman 2009Jacobs / Offir, P.A. M

THe SmaRT way TO Save mOneyToday’s economic conditions are forcing businesses to seek creative solutions for controlling costs. As a result, many entrepreneurs are turning to Virtual Officing to reduce overhead, lower expenditures, and increase mobility. Described as the “wave of the future,” Virtual Officing allows business owners to establish a presence in prestigious office buildings without paying premium prices and utility bills. At the same time, entrepreneurs are able to get assistance from a trained staff without paying for employee benefits or managing a large staff. In the right Virtual Office model, business owners are able to leverage the skills of an independent staff to answer calls, forward messages, and serve as representation for the company. With the assistance of a dedicated staff, company leaders can relief from administrative duties and focus on revenue generating activities that are vital in today’s sluggish economy—all while saving money in the process.

GET MORE FOR LESS

Professionally trained staff in a prestigious office location answer calls as an employee with the information and interest of full time staff and can screen calls, provide information, and connect appropriate callers. This is done

as if the principal were in the office even though they might be at another office, on the move, in court, or even on the golf course.

Mail is received and can be handled per specifications. Appointments can be made and verified. When the need to meet with a prospect or client, a conference room or office is available along with receptionist services. Internet access, copy machines and office services are available for meetings to bring business to conclusion.

All of this is available on a customized basis for a fraction of the cost of a full time brick and mortar office or full time administrative staff. Imagine the flexibility of a virtual office combined with the image of a traditional one. Imagine if this were also affordable too! You can meet with a virtual office facility, establish an account that is based on your needs, and begin utilizing the benefits almost immediately.

WHAT CHANGES

First, the cost of having an office including the overhead for office space, a phone system, a receptionist, an administrative assistant, office machines, and utilities are either eliminated or drastically reduced to a fraction.

With many people working from multiple locations, whether it be a hotel, meeting with clients or other work that takes them on the road, office space is no longer needed unless they have the infrequent need. Companies no longer have to bear the expense of office space in order to “be in business.” When the need arises to meet with clients, have a sales meeting, or accomplish some deskwork, it is available for only the time required.

A properly configured business center with virtual officing capabilities can provide an image of a full time office with the services to assist almost any company. An example of change would be the receptionist who in a virtual office can assist you for a little as $1.44 per hour. Better yet, she will not be sick, never late, never take a vacation, and be professionally trained prior to working with you.

For those entrepreneurs who work from a home office, your business address is not your home and the distinction allows separation of your personal life from your business life. Also, the office can be a location for incorporation and business licensing.

As you move around working in your business, you can make an appointment in a virtual office and learn how they can help you take advantage of services to help your business grow and make it more profitable. ∞

Lake Shore Plaza II:Stiles Brings First ‘Green’ Building to Sunrise

Since launching Sawgrass International Corporate Park in 1987, Stiles Corpora-tion has brought an impressive array of regional, national and international com-panies to Sunrise. Now, Lake Shore Plaza II continues Stiles’ commitment to cre-ating innovative, quality work environ-ments within the City’s top-tier corporate neighborhood.

Completed in summer 2008, the 130,000-square-foot Lake Shore Plaza II – a joint venture of Stiles Corporation and WLD Enterprises –is the first-to-market “green” multi-tenant office building in Sunrise, with a growing roster of prime tenants like The Florida Bar and T-Mobile South LLC.

Located at 1300 Concord Terrace in Saw-grass International Corporate Park, Lake Shore Plaza II is pre-certified to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). For ten-ants, the benefits range from significant energy cost savings and outstanding in-door air quality, to highly efficient water systems and a comprehensive recycling program.

Also within the 612-acre corporate park, Stiles is developing its next “green” project: 1650 Sawgrass, a 69,000-square-foot Class A office building.

The company also recently broke ground on the $30 million Public Safety Complex for the City of Sun-rise, scheduled for completion in March 2011.

Stiles Corporation is a full-service commercial real estate development and investment company that pro-vides clients with premier develop-ment, design, construction, financ-ing, realty and property management services. bdominoplasty, often referred to as a Tummy Tuck is on an increase. Both men and women alike are choosing to improve their ap-pearance by removing excessive drooping ab-dominal skin and tightening their lax abdomi-nal muscles.

While the results can be extreme by improv-ing both body image and life style, patients un-dergoing abdominoplasty can experience a fair amount of discomfort for 2 to 3 days. New Im-age Cosmetic Surgery Center is happy to offer the Accufuser pain control pump. This recovery option is not available at every doctor’s office.

A non-narcotic local anesthetic is con-tinuously administered via tiny tube-like cath-eters inserted near the incision site during surgery. The Accufuser pain pump features a push-button control called a bolus button. This option allows you to administer an additional dose of pain medication as needed. By blocking receptors, the sensation of pain is significantly decreased.

Pain pumps are not new. They have been widely used for years in orthopedic surgery with an excellent track record for safety and pain relief. The advantages of the Accufuser pain pump are many. The need for oral pain medication is decreased which in turn decreas-es the likelihood of nausea,

A upset stomach, constipation and sedation as-sociated with narcotic pain pills. In addition, you are more likely to experience a quicker re-covery.

By utilizing this state-of-the-art anesthesia equipment, we can ensure the gold standard of pain management; your surgical experience will be a safe, comfortable and rewarding one.

Philip Jacobson, M.D. is the Director of Anes-thesiology and the Pain Management Special-ist. Board Certified by the American Academy of Pain Management.

In South Florida we are all aware of the danger of hurricanes. Since the mid-1990’s businesses have been pounded by an average of 14 named storms every year, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic damage.

Businesses and organizations have a particular set of challenges during a hurricane. The safety and se-curity of employees, as well as damage to physical facilities are major concerns. In light of the econom-ic stresses we are all facing, the prudent business owner will want to make sure they are prepared to minimize damage and loss to their businesses and property.

What can you do to ensure that your organization is prepared in the event that a storm incapacitates your business? The following is a short list of ac-tions needed to assist in preparing your business before, during and after a hurricane.

First, familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a hurricane. A hurricane watch means a hurricane is possible in your area. Monitor local radio and television news outlets for the latest developments. A hurricane warning is when a hur-ricane is expected in your area. If local authorities advise you to evacuate, leave immediately.

Long before the storm...

Make sure property is in good repair. Make sure all windows, doors, siding and roofing are secured ac-cording to building codes. Once wind gets under loose building materials, they will rip off. If you have portable sheds and trailers, tie them down securely.

Make sure all equipment is serviced and adequate supplies are on hand. Evaluate your potential needs. For days to weeks after a hurricane, normal deliver-ies may be disrupted. Make sure you have fuel and other supplies you may need. Consider having mini-mal building materials on hand to repair structures.

Create a contact list for critical business contractors and others you plan to use in an emergency; keep this list with other important documents.

Plan what you will do if your building or store is not accessible. Consider if you can run the business from a different location or from your home. Review your emergency plan annually. Update your plan when you hire new employees or when there are changes in how your company functions.

Immediately before the storm...

Plan for continuity. Determine which staff mem-bers, materials, procedures, operations, and equip-ment are absolutely necessary to keep your busi-ness operating.

Secure your business information. Make multiple backups of critical computer data and store them off premises. Keep checks, purchase orders, financial re-cords and vehicle titles off the premises as well.

Secure electronic equipment. Unplug and wrap all electronics including computers in large plastic bags to protect against water damage. Store electronics off the floor, in locations that are high and dry.

Secure all loose items. Cover all glass windows and doors on at least the first floor of the building with shutters, or other protective material.

Have emergency numbers. Make sure you have the numbers of your property insurance agents, local po-lice, fire and other emergency contacts.

Inventory your equipment. Take pictures. This will help in the event you need to file a claim. Record the serial numbers on your equipment

Make arrangements for power. Evaluate your short-term energy needs, and whether your company needs a generator. If so, stock fuel for it. Power lines may be disabled for days or weeks jeopardizing your ability to conduct business after the storm.

Establish a means to communicate with your employ-ees. Create a clear-cut hurricane policy for employees and post it in advance. Make sure contact information is up-to-date. Allow time for your employees to se-cure their homes prior to a storm.

Allow plenty of time to get prepared. Do not run short of time and risk not getting everything done you need

After the storm ... Secure your structures and buildings. Make any nec-essary repairs to your structures so they are secure from the weather and intrusion.

Notify the proper authorities in the event of storm damage. Notify the local police or sheriff’s department of any road obstructions or hazardous situations. No-tify your electric company of any power outages so they can get your request in their repair sequences. Report water, sewer or gas line breaches to the appro-priate authority. If in doubt, call the police or sheriff’s department.

Notify your customers of your situation. As quickly as possible, let your customers know how well you sur-vived the storm and when you anticipate servicing their accounts.

Inspect your property closely. Pay particular attention to downed power lines, broken water lines, etc…Photograph and document damage before you start clean-up.

We hope that these suggestions prove helpful. The best defense is to stay informed!

If you live here in Florida, odds are you’re beginning to ex-perience hard times economically. So are your friends and neighbors, the businesses you frequent and the community you live in. Not a great situation for any of us is it? Well brace yourselves; here comes the real threat for all of us living here in paradise.

According to Pro-Tech International Security Systems Presi-dent, Rudi Yzer, “For the first time since 1992, statistics show, that the number of property crimes, such as burglar-ies, are rising at an alarming rate. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has warned us that the number of bur-glaries statewide has jumped by 3.6 percent in the first six months of this year alone, and who knows how high they’ll rise by years end.”

Mr. Yzer founded Pro-Tech Int’l Security, Inc., in 1990 and due to the necessity in the security industry he partnered with retired Metro Dade officer Richard Mundy to found Pro-24 Security & Investigative Services, Inc., in 2000.

Mr. Yzer, a recognized security expert believes that today you can not live safely, or adequately protect your property in a house or apartment without a proper security system, but he’s quick to point out that the system you chose does not have to cost you an arm and a leg. “You can get your property effectively covered for less than you imagine,” he said. “Pro-Tech, for instance has very economical systems that will do a great job in providing both deterrence and monitoring services for your home, apartment, or commu-nity.” But do we really need security protection? Of course we do.

It is widely acknowledged that crimes, particularly property crimes, generally rise during times of economic slowdown. Even Attorney General Bill McCollum freely admits that he now believes we are starting to see the impact of the econ-omy on crime statistics.

We asked Mr. Yzer about the areas being targeted by aggres-sive thieves right now. He told us that Gated Communities and Single Family Residences have been in the gun sights of these criminals for quite awhile. Houses under foreclosure make easy targets for theft and vandalism, and exclusive residential locations are targeted for their automobiles, art collections and jewelry.

Marinas, where security is generally lax, are targeted for marine electronics, outboard engines, fishing and diving equipment and even the vessels themselves.

Our Faltering

Causes Spike In Property Crimes

ECONOMY

“The most active targets right now are construction sites,” said Yzer (both new and remodeling sites). They have been hit hard by the rise in theft. Here criminals are target-ing copper wiring, copper and brass valves, appliances such as refrigerators, washer/dryers, dish washers, sprinkler pumps, a/c units, hurricane shutters and panels. “Anything that is easy to carry away and can be sold as scrap metal is particularly vulnerable,” said Mr. Yzer. “Our security patrols have prevented wires from being ripped out of lights and phone lines, and we’ve even prevented small statues from being stolen. It’s becoming a bit of a mess out there, but nothing we can’t deal with.”

There will be more areas of concern as today’s thieves be-come cleverer and more desperate then ever before. You might want to revisit your security measures and be sure they are adequate and functioning properly. It would be in your best interest to get an updated Risk Assessment. That’s a process used to determine whether your security controls are adequate, appropriate, and cost effective. In other words, are you as prepared as you think to deal with possible security-related risks from internal or external threats? You might just want to call Mr. Yzer’s companies, Pro-Tech International Security Systems or Pro-24 Security and Inves-tigative Services. It is one of the few security organizations out there that offers companies and owners a full site Risk Assessment inspection for FREE.

Pro-Tech Int’l and Pro-24 Security and Investigative Services provide a complete spectrum of Security Services from Sys-tems Design and Installation to Security Officers and Private Investigators. Pro-24 can even provide former law enforce-ment trainers and investigators to school your home own-er’s association members in crime awareness to encourage all of your residents to become involved in the security of their building, gated community, or neighborhood. The Pro-Tech, Pro-24 companies are located in Davie, Flor-ida and can be reached by phone at (954) 874-1064 or on-line at: www.protechweb.net ; www.pro24security.com

So property owners and renters beware, today more vigi-lance is needed than ever before no matter where you live, (gated community or not), or how well you think you’ve been protected.

A homeowner policy can provide protection for both the home and its contents against a wide range of perils, as well as provide personal liability cover-age. This coverage is mandatory when you have a current mortgage on your property. Your home is one of your most valued assets and it is vital to keep it protected. In Florida the hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.

It is important to maintain insurance throughout the year to cover for all perils including hurricane coverage. In today’s market there are many ways that a homeowner can save money on their policy. The most savings can be obtained if the homeowner has a new roof and or storm shutters. The insur-ance carriers came together in accepting a form called the “uniform mitigation verification form.” This form is filled out by a Florida licensed building inspector, general contractor, engineer or architect.

This form is filled out to verify newer roofs that com-ply with current code and if the homeowner has storm shutters. Most homeowners benefit greatly by having this inspection done in order to reduce their premiums. Another discount advantage is having an alarm for burglar and or fire for the home.

These alarms must be monitored by a central moni-toring system and a certificate is then provided to their agent to apply for the discount. A homeowner should always review their policy to be current with the coverage amount the home is insured for. It is a wise idea to always keep your policy in a safe place especially during hurricane season and be aware of the coverage’s and premium you are paying.

In our current economic time, each of us has started to define for ourselves which purchases are necessi-ties and which are luxuries. But is there a way to save your wallet when you need to care for your eyes? We can all agree, that prescription eyeglasses falls un-der that “must have necessity”. Through the years, the average price of eyeglasses at chain stores has gone up. The price does include the latest trends in fashion, warranties, customer satisfaction conditions and quick turnaround time.

If you’re not aware of it, or haven’t heard…budget style optical shops have been around for years and sought out currently more than ever. They offer you more choices in trendy fashionable frame without the extra price that designer labels demand. The qual-ity of the lenses used is equal in optical quality if not better. The turn around time to get your new eye-glasses might be a bit longer, but in comparison to the price it’s well worth it. The saying “time is money” for once… it’s going with you not against you.

Eyeglass Factory Outlet has saved many of it’s cus-tomers a lot of money as well as being in business for over 15 years. All of our prices include frames and

lenses at one low price. Not only do we custom-ize your reading and distance prescriptions into the frame you choose, but also take the time to offer computer vision options for patients. In this time of technological development, most of us have started to rely on computer use, but may not always been able to adapt to the intermediate prescription nec-essary for clear vision.

When you work at a computer for any length of time, it’s common to experience blurred vision and other symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS). You’re more likely to experience eyestrain and eye fatigue while sitting at the computer, be-cause of unique visual demands that are unlike those associated with most other activities.

What can you do? For one thing, obtaining custom-ized computer glasses can make a world of differ-ence in your comfort level while you’re using the computer. These special-purpose glasses are pre-scribed specifically to reduce eyestrain and to give you the most comfortable vision at your computer. On your next visit to your eye doctor, ask for your computer intermediate prescription as part of your complete eye exam.

IT IS PoSSIbLE To budgET Your VISIoN!
