Booster Club Meeting
Tuesday, December 6th 7:00 PM
Mrs. Madsen, 4th grade teacher, won an Educator of
Excellence award from the Olathe Public Schools Foundation. Two former students took the lead on her
nomination application and were even there to honor her when the Surprise Squad visited the school to present her with her award – which included a $500 unrestricted cash
prize just for her!
Mrs. Madsen’s nomination letters highlighted her ability to meet students where they are and how she encourages all of her students to work hard and strive. Lead nominator
Kaitlyn wrote: ““She supported me being a leader… we each had jobs to carry out in the classroom and learned to help in
the community. This, I believe, prepared us for middle school more than any other classroom teacher I had.”
Congratulations Mrs. Madsen!

Celebration
Tuesday, November 22, 2016
Thank You Grandpa Stoker! A huge Sunnyside THANK YOU goes to
Grandpa Stoker (Camille’s & Carolyn’s Grandpa)
for painting a hallway wall. Even though he would
have preferred to paint the wall CRIMSON and
BLUE, he put the needs of Sunnyside first and
painted it a perfectly perfect shade of PURPLE!
Grandpa Stoker, that surely wins you accolades in
the Grandparents hall of fame!

SPLASH Planning Kick-Off!
We are so excited to bring back SPLASH again to our
Sunnyside Kiddos! In order to have a successful, fun
program we need parent volunteers to donate their time
and their passion for ANY hobby.
What’s SPLASH? Sunnyside Play & Learn After School
Hours is a fun, learning experience for all students during
the cold winter months when it can be hard to find activities
for your kiddos. Kids get a chance to interact with other
students outside of their classroom and have an enriching
experiences on various topics in a club setting. Most
importantly it’s FUN!
When is SPLASH?
Four Tuesdays: January 10th – February 7th:
from 3:45pm – 4:45pm
Who should volunteer? Everyone! Seriously though,
we need about 50 volunteers in order provide a great
experience to our kids. We need:
SPLASH Class Leaders – Regardless of your
experience, there’s a class you can instruct based on
your interests. Practically anything goes and in the
past we’ve had classes about cooking and nutrition,
aviation and paper airplanes, Minute to Win it
games, science, pet care, Legos, and beginner
chess. You name it and we can probably do it!
SPLASH Assistants – Every leader could use an extra
pair of hands. This is a great way for 5th graders or
middle school siblings to get volunteer hours.
SPLASH Child Care – If you would like to help by
watching the Class leader’s and Assistant’s Kids,
that would be great!
SPLASH Coordination Committee, a.k.a “Mission
Control” – I could use help with snack bags, class
registration, picture taking for year book, etc…
Future SPLASH Chairperson – Next year will be my
last year at Sunnyside. So I will be needing
someone to shadow me either this year or next in
preparation to take the lead in 2018.
How do I sign up? Please look for the SignUp Genius
emails to sign up by November 30th. URL is www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0449A4A92AAB9-volunteers3
Internet Safety Tips for Children 1. First educate yourself, then your child. Banning a child from certain sites may only motivate them to spend more time
on them, whereas educating your child on how to keep safe will give them the tools they need to navigate their online world
without being hurt; from not posting personal information to a site to understanding that people they are talking to may not
actually be who they are. If the parents know the dangers themselves, this sets an example to the child to understand them as
well.
2. Teach children the obvious identity rules. Tell your children NOT to put photos of themselves on the Internet or to give
out their names, addresses, phone numbers, schools, or other personal information online.
3. Install an Internet filter or family safety software. Family safety software is becoming extremely advanced and an
effective way to filter dangerous content. Additionally, this software usually comes with tools like time management, remote
monitoring and reporting, and keystroke recognition, giving families greater peace of mind and manageability.
4. Know the dangers associated with sites your children frequent. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Whether it’s MySpace, Facebook or another social networking site, by knowing what people are doing on your children’s favorite
sites that could put them in harm’s way, parents can educate their children and show them the warning signs of potentially
dangerous situations.
5. Teach children what to do if they encounter pornography on a home or public computer, such as at a school or
a library. In a similar fashion to the fire warning of “stop, drop and roll,” you can teach children to quickly turn off power to
the computer monitor and go to get an adult. This can prevent a child from attempting to stop the situation by clicking more
buttons (and thereby spreading the attack and being exposed to more porn).
6. Manage your children’s time on the Internet. Scheduling times when a child can be on the Internet and the amount
they can be online ensures that you know when they are on the Internet and how long. By not allowing them to have free reign
reduces their chances of being exposed to inappropriate content.
(If you have a router, you can use it to set times. Please see Protecting your network–use your router for access control
7. Set specific Internet guidelines for your children to live by and consistently enforce consequences, if they are
not being followed. Giving your children specific guidelines to follow will ensure they know where they stand when it comes
to how they use the Internet as well as the consequences when they breach the rules. If a parent enforces consequences
consistently, their children will be more likely to follow the rules.
8. Keep computers out of children’s bedrooms and in open areas. With PCs in the open, children will be less inclined to
view and access material that may not be acceptable.
9. Create a relationship with your children that is conducive to open communication. Open communication and trust
is extremely valuable. By letting children know what is expected from them and that their safety is a top priority, they will feel
that if something happens –whether they are approached by a cyber stranger or bully or receive an inappropriate e-mail – they
can approach a parent to resolve the issue without feeling they are in trouble.
10. Understand how and where to report. Make reports to www.cybertipline.com
Congratulations to this quarter’s “Kearney’s Kids of Character!” Kearney’s Kids of Character recognizes students for making
good choices and modeling our Student Guiding Principles of Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness and Honesty! Students
were randomly drawn from a bucket of Caught You Shining Slips they received throughout the first quarter of school.
The students were recognized at a school-wide program and received a Kids of Character button. They will celebrate with a
Popsicle Party & Recess hosted by Mrs. Wells and Mr. Kearney.

Candy For Our Troops!
This year the Sunnyside Student Council will be collecting Halloween
candy, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to send to soldiers who are
representing our country. Candy and teeth care items will be
collected in the front lobby between 8:00-8:30 from
Monday, November 7th- Friday, November 11th.
Please keep in mind that candy must be individually wrapped and
that Pixy Sticks are not accepted.
Thank for your support of our troops
and the Sunnyside Student Council.
You may have noticed some bright and shining new signs around our school campus. The signs are a
result of the SUPER, SUNSATIONALLY, SUCCESSFUL Walking On Sunshine Booster Club Fundraiser.
The 3 students who collected the most pledges received either a 24/7 parking spot or the naming rights to
one of the drives at Sunnyside. Congratulations and thank you to the students
pictured below for making our school shine!
