MARCH 2020

RAISED GARDEN BED

Frank & Marilyn have been busy planting the raised garden bed which Adam & Frank made. Looks like we can look forward to some lovely fresh vegetables.

MRC

We started out strong with six MRC students attending Sunnyside of a Tuesday but unfortunately with these trying times, they had to stop their visits. Looking forward to seeing them once this is all over.

SHAYE & EM

We were also lucky to get two placement girls of a Wednesday. Em was to work until the end of Term 1 and Shaye until October. But once again COVID-19 stepped in and both girls are unable to come in.

WALKS

Residents have been outside walking around the gardens in this beautiful weather. Hopefully the weather lasts and we can get outside more often.

COOKING

Residents had a busy week, first peeling and slicing apples from our Sunnyside trees, before being cooked by kitchen staff.

The next day they were back at it making apple pies.

ST PATRICK’S DAY RAFFLE

The lucky winners from our St Patrick’s Day raffle were:

• Carolyn Anderson

• Glenda Lucas

• Dorrie White

• Lani Anderson

• Millicent Jenkins

• Pam Anderson

A HUGE thankyou to Karleen Johns who is continuously knitting rugs, toys & whatever we need to put in our raffles or to sell on our craft stall.

We raised $55.00 to go towards residents’ activities.

ST PATS DAY

Green once again filled Sunnyside on 17th March for St Patrick’s Day.

Residents participated in Irish quizzes and a lucky coin toss, which was won by Bert. Although he didn’t mind sharing his loot.

Residents then joined in a sing-a-long with Angela and Don with lots of green drinks at happy hour.

12th MARCH

We had a busy day on 12th March. First, we had singers, Jo & Graham McGrath in to entertain the residents. Everybody enjoyed the sing-a-long and some even got up to dance.

Afternoon tea followed and we farewelled Bernadette, our beloved hairdresser, who has worked at Sunnyside for 30 years! Enjoy your retirement and travels Bernadette.

MESSAGE FROM CEO

Challenging times, difficult times for many, are here for an unknown period. In all of these challenges, please, let us not forget all the good that people are doing to minimize the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and maximize the positive caring and helping:

• The government forgetting about politics (well mostly) for the good of the nation, is doing everything to help Australians financially, for the future, mental health care, extra attention and consideration for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their heightened vulnerability.

• Reviewing how we have “all our eggs in one basket” with trade and production

• Finding new ways to communicate

• Finding new ways to celebrate together but apart (facetime, messenger, meetings, birthdays, product review…)

• The creativity of communities: o Bears in windows o Checking on neighbours by

phone, letter, over the fence, “Are you OK?” “Do you need anything”?

• Enterprising business people creating new markets and new products, such as “Shaz Bears”; restaurants becoming takeaway and delivery services, so many more…

FREE STUFF

• Amazing music releases by some of our most talented musicians in the world

• Incredible humour using music and song, art and poetry

• Flower growers donating flowers rather than throwing them away

• The “rich and famous” inviting us into their homes to offer support and encouragement

• Online gym and workout sessions such as our own Chris Hemsworth, as well as offering guided meditation to help kids with stress and anxiety…so many more…

We are not alone for all of these changes. We will never be the same again, hopefully we will be forever more mindful of each other and we will never see the abominable behaviour and selfishness demonstrated during this outbreak, and now being directed towards our nurses, doctors, ambulance officers, police… The most important things for me to remember are our hand and personal hygiene, cough and sneeze etiquette and DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE (the virus cannot get to you unless it gets to your mouth, eyes or nose). Be grateful for what we have and who we have in our lives. A BIG SHOUT OUT to our fantastic staff, residents and families. You are all amazing! Hugs and loves, automatic, no clutch, physical distance, social connectedness. Claire Schmierer Chief Executive Officer

JOKE OF THE WEEK Kindly provided by Verna

A man was driving along the highway and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful and he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. “I feel terrible” he explained, “I accidently hit this rabbit and killed it”. The woman told the man not to worry and she knew what to do. She went to her car boot, pulled out a spray can and walked over to the limp, dead rabbit and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit. Miraculously the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 metres away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved and hopped down the road. After another 50 metres he turned, waved and hopped another 50 metres. The man was astonished! He couldn’t figure out what substance could be in the woman’s spray can!! He ran over to the woman and demanded “What is in your spray can? What did you spray on that rabbit?” The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said “Hair Spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave”.
