THE EXPRESSION JANUARY CHRIST’S CHURCH FOR ALL PEOPLE 2018

It’s no fun to be struck-down by pneumonia during the holidays!

The scratchy throat and the headache appeared first. I was shivering uncon-trollably and coughing less than a day later. My appetite disappeared. Dizzi-ness kept me from moving easily from place to place. I found myself spending endless hours in my recliner – trapped in front of the horror of daytime televi-sion during one the busiest times of the year.

I’m glad to say that I’ve turned the corner!

My cough is almost under control, and my fever is gone. My appetite’s back, and I have slowly been able to return to a more normal routine. But, I’ve changed. More than two weeks of nibbling has left me seventeen pounds lighter. I’ve noticed that I lost a lot of my strength – because that’s what hap-pens when you spend too much time in bed or in a recliner. My mind has been softened by reruns of “Law and Order,” by daily trips into the courtroom of “Judge Judy,” and by renewed encounters with the original “Star Wars” movies. I’m still taking it a bit easy in the office and am not planning a lot of visits in the next few weeks because the wind has simply been taken from my sails.

Recovering from an illness (or injury) isn’t easy. Muscles that have become weak need to be stretched and exercised. Intensive therapy is sometimes needed. Baby steps need to be taken be-fore larger steps are possible. It takes time to build endurance and stamina and strength and bal-ance.

St. Paul once described the Church as the “body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27), and I would like to build-upon that image in the coming year. Many churches have responded to the challenges of modern times by cutting-back and by eliminating important parts of their ministries. Ministries have been trimmed because of a lack of faithful volunteers and financial resources. People have been drawn away from the Church and find themselves participating in a variety of other activities on Sun-day mornings. And, as those things have happened, Christ’s Church has lost some strength and a bit of weight.

Recovering from an illness (or injury) isn’t easy for people, or for the Church. Ministries need to be stretched and exercised again. Intensive therapy is sometimes needed. We need to recapture what it means to be God’s people in changing times! And this can be done by redeveloping a sense of community and a renewed awareness of the importance of cooperation, by returning to faith practic-es that have strengthened the life of the Church for nearly 2,000 years, by recommitting ourselves to the task of creating strong and vibrant families where faith is incorporated into every-day life, and by building our community of faith upon the strong rock of Jesus Christ and God’s message of hope for the world.

THE EXPRESSION JANUARY 2018

The Shofar

Reading through the entire Bible can be a deeply enriching experience for Christians of every age! God opens our hearts and minds as we explore His Word and the Holy Spirit stirs our hearts as we read and digest Holy Scripture. The Bible, itself, tells us that “the Word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12) and that the words of the Bible judge the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Perhaps, you’ve tried a “Through the Bible” program that encouraged you to begin to read the Bible in Genesis; but, your progress came to a complete halt when you began working your way through Leviticus. Many people, who enthusiastically begin to read through the Bible, become discouraged when they fall behind – and realize they just don’t have enough time to catch-up with the scheduled readings. I’m hoping that this attempt to guide you through the Bible, over the course of a 52-week period, will be both different and more manageable. First, I’m going to “take the pressure off” by providing the readings on a weekly basis, so that you don’t become overwhelmed and I’m going to simply encourage you to just keep moving forward. If you miss a day, now and then, don’t worry about it! Just stay focused and read the chapters of the Bible that are being suggested for that day. It’s far better to keep moving forward – even if you miss a reading, now and then – than to tightly chain your-self to a strict routine that you will, most likely, abandon. Second, I’m going to “take the pressure off” by providing a mixture of readings from very different parts of the Bi-ble. I’m hoping that if you find a particular book of the Bible hard to understand that you’ll just keep moving through the reading knowing that tomorrow’s reading will be from a different part of the Bible. And please, if you’ve just dis-covered this “Through the Bible” reading program today, don’t think that you need to start by going to the begin-ning of the list and starting at “Week 1” (although you may want to do that at some point). Just begin moving though the Bible with this week’s suggested readings. Remember: you are reading through the Bible with other faithful Christians who are reading the same part of that Bible that you are each day! And third, I’m going to “take the pressure off” by encouraging you to create a routine that will help you to set-aside time to read God’s Word each day (if you don’t already have a regularly, scheduled time for daily Bible reading and prayer) realizing that most of us can create new “habits” by doing something, each day, for 21 days. Just imagine, in just three short weeks, you’ll develop a routine where reading God’s Word becomes a part of every single day!

Communication is More than Talking

When it comes to communication, there are two kinds of people in the world, those who love to hear others talk, and those who love to hear themselves talk (and we all know which kinds of people are more fun to be with).

Good communication skills begin with listening. Not only do you learn things about other people by listening, but you also make others feel important when you give them your full attention, complete with head nods and eye contact. Of course, your goal may be to help others become good listeners by doing all the talking yourself. Learn to distinguish between head nods that show genuine interest and those that indicate that your listener is dozing off out of sheer boredom.

Even if you don’t aspire to become a world-class listener, you can always improve your communica-tion skills by self-editing your conversation. Keep talking, but use fewer words (better words, too). Avoid the extremes of empty flattery and harmful gossip (what other kind of gossip is there?).

Here’s another form of nonverbal communication that’s extremely effective. Whenever someone has done something nice for you, write a thank you note. When tragedy strikes another, express your sympathy with a heartfelt card. You’ll never know how meaningful your written words will be to oth-ers. …In The Small Stuff People are attracted to enthusiasm. Have a ready smile and a firm handshake. Think about your question before you ask it. A wink delivers a powerful message, so be careful at whom you wink. A card sent with a personal note inside is more meaningful than a card sent but only signed. Listen with your eyes as well as your ears. Sometimes it’s easier to communicate face-to-face if you’re walking side by side. No one will ever accuse you of being a boring conversationalist if you let people talk about them-

selves. A truly eloquent speech includes all that is necessary, and no more. Thoughtful compliments wear better than impulsive flattery. Use superlatives sparingly. People who talk a lot about themselves seldom want to hear what others have to say.

THE EXPRESSION APRIL 2015 THE EXPRESSION NOVEMBER THE EXPRESSION JANUARY 2018

Mission Moment: Five Faith Practices

Did you know that God wants you to have a strong and vibrant faith?

God promises to draw close to us as we listen to the Good News of His endless love and as we celebrate His warm embrace. God calls us together, fills our hearts with hope and peace, forgives our sins and makes us holy in His eyes, and promises that we will one-day share eternity in His Kingdom. The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing and that hearing comes from the Word of God (Romans 10:17). The Bible clearly pro-claims that faith comes to us from outside of ourselves. And so, it makes sense to look to God alone as the source of our faith, and to abandon the notion that faith is a “private” thing that can be developed in solitude and isolation from others.

We will be affirming our baptism during worship on the first weekend in January.

We’ll be remembering that faith is a journey that carries us from childhood into adulthood, and that faith chal-lenges us to participate in a community of God’s people in a world filled with rugged individualism. We will be affirming our baptism as a sign of our renewed and continuing commitment to participate in the life of the Church—where Christ is found. We will join in a “communal” affirmation of faith, and we will be reminded that the faith that we share is a faith that’s been passed to us by previous generations. We will reject the work of the devil—we will reject the powers in this world that rebel against God—and we will reject the ways of sin that continue to draw us away from God.

As you prepare for worship on the first weekend in January, please take a few moments to reflect upon the promises that we’ll be making as we affirm our baptism:

We promise to continue to live among God’s faithful people; We promise to hear God’s Word and to share in the Lord’s Supper; We promise to proclaim the Good News of Christ through our words and deeds; We promise to serve all people—following the example of Christ; We promise to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.

Baptism is a life-changing and forever-altering experience!

Come and join us on the first weekend in January as we affirm our baptism, and as we enter a new year where God will fill us with faith and call us into action.
