TODAY’S GOSPEL: Luke 9:44-50

"Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men." But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But when Jesus per-ceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side, and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great."

John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us." But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you."

ASK THE PASTOR

What is a Baregentan [pronounced Bah - reh - gen - tahn ]?

There are many Baregentan[s] (days of good living,) in our Church calendar, but the two major periods of Baregentan precede the seasons of the Christmas and Easter Fasting. One such occasion we all know well is the day before Great Lent called Boon (Main or Prime) Baregentan. That name rings for all people with a joyful sound, not as a religious feast but an earthly feasting. By its very nature, living well is the signal for the start of a long period of abstinence and fasting. Baregentan days, then, serve for joyous celebration as a coun-terbalance to the trying weeks of abstinence that will follow. According to the canons and tradition of the Armenian Church, everyone must observe the letter and the spirit of the fasting periods. It is a time of sober reflection of wonderful things yet to come. This Sunday is a day of merriment as the Armenian Church begins her season of preparing for the Birth of Our Lord/ Theophany or Christmas. The Baregentan of Theophany begins with 50 days of getting ready for the Feast of God’s coming to earth. During this period called Advent or ‘Heesnak’ (in Armenian), our church observes a three-week period to refrain from overindulgence of foods and merriment, thus containing the spirits until Christmas day, January 6th. Aside from the usual Wednesday and Friday weekly fasts during Advent, the first week is held fully refraining from meat and animal products; the second week is observed as the beginning of winter and the fast of St. James of Nisibis, and the last week just prior to Janu-ary 6th is focused on the coming of Christ, Jesus the Lord and King, Emmanuel, God with us. Counting backward 50 days from January 6th brings us to November 18th, which is the beginning of our Christmas Lent. And so, it is our custom on this Sunday of Good Living to prepare lavish tables, eat rich foods, hold festive family gatherings, and recreational and social affairs of creative and distinctive character. Let us give thanks for all God’s blessing on this Sunday.

PLEASE NOTE . . .

DECEMBER 24TH AND DECEMBER 31ST

DUE TO THE HOLIDAYS.

THE REGULAR SCHEDULE WILL RESUME ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 7TH.

WE BELIEVE—HAVADAMK—ՀԱՒԱՏԱՄՔ The Nicene Creed sums up all our basic beliefs. We recite or chant it when we gather to celebrate the Divine Liturgy/Soorp Badarak, and in the sacrament services of Bap-tism and Marriage. The Nicene Creed, written in the city of Nicea, became part of our Badarak in the mid-Fifth Century. There are 12 verses that sum up the faith of the Church. Verse 5: By whom [the Virgin Mary] He took body, soul and mind and everything that is in man, *truly and not in semblance. Vor ov ehar marmeen, hokee yev meed, yev zamenayn vor eench eh ee mart, jushmardabes yev voch gardzyok. *We believe that God was born of a human mother and took her real flesh. That is why she is called the Mother-of-God (in Armenian Asdvadzadzeen or Bearer of God). For this reason Jesus had human feelings, sadness, joy anger . . . “everything that is in man truly” not seeming like it. God truly understood the humanity he created—how we feel [our souls] and how we think [our minds].
