The Twenty Ninth Sunday In Ordinary Time

See Worship Book 950

The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

It has been estimated that Internet start-up companies try to squeeze ten years’ worth of growth in just three years. Imagine the grueling amount of work the entire team would have to perform over that time. Imagine the sacrifices each team member would have to make in order to make the company a success. Now imagine if, one day, one of the employees of such a company stood up in a meeting and asked the founder to make him a key executive over everyone else. Imagine him asking for the corner office and all the other perks that come with such a position. How do you think his coworkers would react? They had all worked hard! Why should this fellow get special treatment? This scenario is a bit of a modern take on today’s Gospel reading, as James and John ask Jesus to guarantee them special seating when he comes into his kingdom. All the disciples had worked hard and followed Jesus faithfully, so why should these two be raised up above the others? It seems that James and John missed three important points. First, they didn’t understand that Jesus was destined to be a heavenly king, not an earthly one. They missed that he wanted to build a kingdom focused on mercy and love, not power and domination. Second, they didn’t realize that Jesus had come to die, not to reign. He had come, not to be served like royalty, but to serve his people—to the point of giving up his very life for them. Finally, they missed the point that this isn’t a competition. Everyone who serves Jesus will be given a seat of honor in heaven! Like the apostles, you, too, are part of Jesus’ team. So think about your role in his organization. How is he calling you to give your life in service to him and his kingdom?

“Father, give me a servant’s heart. Lord, I want to dedicate myself to making sure that everyone in your

kingdom succeeds.” Reprinted with permission from The Word Among Us

FEATURED ON THE COVER: The Blessed Virgin promoting vocations to the priesthood and to the foreign missions appears in the scroll at the top of the St. Peter Chanel Window. He was born in France and became a member of the Society of Mary (Marists). Following his desire to convert pagans, he set sail for the South Pacific where he landed on the island of Futuna, November 8, 1837. He suffered martyrdom at the hands of those he came to save. This window pictures his glorification with angels bearing the instruments of his martyrdom. October is Mary’s Month.

On the right side of the tabernacle, is a bas-relief of the Communion of the Blessed Mother. This costly altar was offered to the new church by the children of the parish, particularly those who attended the parocial parochial school. The six thousand dollars which it cost

was the fruit of their industry and the result of four years of thrift. The high altar was consecrated on November 30, 1911 by Bishop John J. Lawlor, auxiliary bishop of St. Paul.

World Mission Sunday October 20-21 - Celebrating our Missionary Spirit Pope Francis in his 2018 World Mission Sunday message states, “Together with young people, let us bring the Gospel to all” calling to mind the active and joyful activities of youth as they witness the Gospel message through serving the poor and elderly in parishes. Thus, this weekend, we celebrate World Mission Sunday with the theme Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of Youth highlighting the passion of the youth in the St. Vincent de Paul Society at the parish of Jesucristo Resucitado, Venezuela, our archdiocesan mission parish. This is an example of a mission diocese receiving support from the World Mission Sunday appeal. Please be as generous as you are able and help support over 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide. There will be envelopes available in the back of church and at the exits if you wish to contribute. Ample free parking is available during weekend Masses just steps from St. Louis Church in the Andersen Human Services Building parking ramp across Tenth Street. It is open 4-6 pm Saturdays and 6:15 am-2 pm Sundays. Enter through the “Contract” entrance around the corner on Minnesota Street. You can descend to street level either in the stairway at the corner of Tenth and Minnesota, or the elevators located in the opposite (northwest) corner of each level. Ascending back to your parking level can only be done via the elevator. If the barrier is down at the exit, approach slowly and the gate will open.
