DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY TO MARY IMMACULATE

Very Reverend Joseph T. Cahill, C.M. President

DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY

TO MARY IMMACULATE

Mary, Mother of God, Holy Virgin, we, the Board of Trustees, administrators,

faculty, and students of St.John's University, renew our filial and abiding love to you

at this Baccalaureate Mass, as we consecrate again our beloved University to you. With

you, may we be consecrated completely to our Son, Christ our Lord, and like you,

dedicated to fulfilling the will of Our Father. Our intentions in this dedication

include our whole being-all that we have, all that we presently are, and especially all

that we ever hope to be. In our re-consecration, we ask you to reserve a special place in

your maternal heart for our benefactors, relatives and friends, without whose prayers

and material assistance our noble commitments are impossible. Humbly we

acknowledge how profoundly and earnestly we depend upon your continued

intercession in the realization of the sublime objectives of our University.

Mother of Christ, inspire our dedicated administrators and faculty with a love of

your Son and make Him the center of their lives. Inflame within our students a spirit

of scholarship, a love of fundamental moral virtues and a burning apostolic zeal, with

which they may hasten the triumph of the Kingdom of God and be vibrant

instruments of peace among all peoples and all nations.

Mother of the Church, help each one of us to exemplify in our lives our University

motto of perfecting the soul through Christian education. With Christ as our divine

focal point and you as our cherished model of faith, we renew our consecration of

St. John's University.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date

back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning.

The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves.

The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown, however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow.

The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open, it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell-like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field oflearning to which the degree pertains.

Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel.

The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood - a black shell-like affair of varying size for the three degrees and material to match the gown - is silk-lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the color signifying the respective fields of learning.

The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows:

Arts and Letters . . .. . ... White Library Science . .. . . . . . ... Lemon Laws .... .. .. . . . ...... . Purple Education ... . . . . ..... . .. . Light Blue Philosophy .... . . . .. . ... Blue Science . . ....... . . . , . . ... Golden Yellow Fine Arts .... . . . ....... Brown Business Administration . . . Light Brown

Pharmacy . . . . ... . ... .... .... Green

It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the conferment of a degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires the blue velvet irrespective of the major field . If more than one degree. is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn.

Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as I

follows: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, maroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, white with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St.John's University, bright red with white chevron.

DOCTOR OF LAWS

THE HONORABLE JOSEPH P. ADDABBO

An unknowledgeable cynic, noting Congressman Addabbo's championship of civil rights, small business minorities, the elderly and handicapped, education, the environment, veterans, and peace might write him off as merely a smart politician. He would be wrong. The Congressman's integrity is attested to by his 24 years on the Hill as the candidate of both major parties chosen by a successively higher plurality of the voters with each election, as well as his congressional committee activity and voting record. Chairman of the Minority Enterprises and Franchising Subcommittee of the Select Committee on Small Business from 1967 to 1975, Chairman of the Small Business Administration, Oversight and Minority Enterprise Subcommittee of the Small Business Committee from 1975 to 1979, he is currently a member of the latter's SBA and SBIC Authority, Minority Enterprise and General Small Business Problems, and General Oversight Subcommittees. He is a member of the Treasury-Post Office and Military Subcommittees, and has served on the Committee for Veterans Affairs and Post Office-Civil Service. He is best known, of course, for his strategic post as Chairman since 1979 of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, where he carefully monitors funds for sophisticated nuclear weaponry in favor of conventional weaponry in order to slow down the arms race and promote solid negotiation. He has fought for civil rights especially by sponsoring and supporting legislation to remove voting regulations that effectively prevented minorities from exercising their citizens' right to the franchise. He has pushed housing and a cheaper cost of living and medical expenses for the elderly. Born in Queens in 1925, Congressman Addabbo attended P.S. 59, Boys High in Brooklyn, and CCNY before earning an LL.B. from St.John's University School of Law in 1946 at the age of 21. After 14 years of private practice he became in 1960 the youngest Democrat in Congress in the Kennedy administration; at present he is 24th in seniority in the 435-member House of Representatives. Admitted to the New York State Bar, he is a member of the Queens County Bar, New York State Bar, and Columbian Lawyers Associations. He serves his Church as a member of the Ferrini Welfare League, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn, former Regional Chairman of the Bishop's Diocesan High School and Old Age Drive, and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus; and the wider community with membership in the Ozone Park Jewish Center Building Committee, the South Queens Civic Council, the Kiwanis, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and is an honorary member of the National Ancient Order of Hibernians. He holds many awards from civic, religious, philanthropic, and educational organizations and institutions, including the Medal of Honor from his Alma Mater, St. John's. Married to the former Grace Salamone, they have three children, and reside in Ozone Park. St. John's University is pleased to bestow further honor on its distinguished son and public servant, The Honorable Joseph P. Addabbo, by conferring on him, honoris causa, the Degree of Doctor of Laws.

THE PRESIDENT'S MEDAL

JOHN M. COSTER

John Coster has been a completely dedicated pharmacist since he took a job at 16 as a pharmacy clerk in Janisco Pharmacy, Brooklyn, where he is currently a New York State Registered Pharmacy Intern. Indeed, considering the wealth of experience he has accumulated in the past six years, he might be called, at only 22, a seasoned pharmacist. Born in Queens, he attended St. Vincent De Paul Parochial School, Greenpoint, and Christ the King High School where, in his senior year, he took advantage of St. John's Early Admissions Extension Program whereby he acquired college credits along with his high school work. During his college years in which he consistently made the Dean's List, he gained hospital, out-patient, regulatory and informational experience in the externship programs at Booth Memorial Hospital, the U.S. Army Ainsworth Health Clinic at Fort Hamilton, and with the National Pharmaceutical Council in Washington, D.C., and was a student American Pharmaceutical Association intern with Sterile Products, as well as a commissioned officer in the student training and externship program of the National Institute of Health's Public Health Services. He has just been selected, in national competition, for the one-year administrative residency program of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists in Washington, D.C. His greatest achievement, however, both for himself and for St. John's, was his election last year as National President of the Student American Pharmaceutical Association, a subdivision of the American Pharmaceutical Association, with 12,000 members and 72 chapters. He had previously served as President of the St. John's Chapter, and Vice President of the Student Pharmaceutical Society of the State of New York. His duties as National President took him to many university campuses across the United States and Canada as a worthy representative of the national society and St. John's. He also expressed the student point of view of his chosen profession in articles for American Pharmacy. Senior senator for St. John's University Student Government, he is also a member of the highly selective President's Society, as well as belonging to the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. He is an American College Scholarship Program finalist, The Outstanding Young Man of America for 1983, and has been awarded membership in the Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society and Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society, and is listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. John lives with his parents, John and Rose Coster, in Ozone Park. St. John's is eager to show its just pride in this extraordinary son, John M. Coster, by conferring on him The President's Medal.

DOCTOR OF LETTERS

MARY ALICE WILLIAMS

This very young woman is a 16-year veteran television news reporter, producer, anchorwoman, and executive. At only 18 she was a reporter of rock festivals, campus protests, and political conventions for KSTP-TV, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nor did she let up during her four college years at Creighton University, Omaha, but. continued traveling throughout the midwest as a reporter for NBC affiliate stations. On graduation, at 22, she was named producer, then executive producer of KSTP-TV newscasts, at the same time supplying half-hour news formats for mid west stations and coordinated network feeds for NBC news. The following year she became executive producer of New York's independent station WPIX, and the year after that, at 24, reporter and anchor for NBC's NewsCenter Four, the first two-hour news broadcast in the city, from the network's flagship station. During her five years with NewsCenter Four she covered such major stories as the tragic Eastern Airlines Crash at Kennedy, the 1976 Democratic Convention, the Johnstown Flood of that year where she was the first to reach trapped victims and summon National Guard aid, and the 1977 Long Island Hurricane whose reporting won her the New York Press Club's By-Line Award. She received further awards for her reports on education and the city's fiscal crisis. She was the only reporter to cover the deposed Shah of Iran's secret removal from the United States in 1979. In 1980 Miss Williams was one of the pioneers to create the first all-news television network, supervising the assembly of the New York Bureau of Cable News Network, an entire TV station in itself, where for the first time studio, control room, operations area, and assignment room were clustered together in one spot in order to meet the then untested demands of 24-hours news supply. Appointed Vice President of Cable News Network in 1982, she now runs the Bureau, with a staff of 80 reporters, writers, producers, camera operators, field engineers, studio technicians, and assignment editors - the only woman directing news feed at a major New York studio. This major achievement has naturally generated new awards for her, including the National Council of Women's Young Achiever Award. Miss Williams is married to Scott Latham, principal partner of the political, and government and media relations consultants, Latham-McLaughlin Associates. St. John's University salutes and warmly applauds this amazing young television news executive, Mary Alice Williams, by conferring on her, honoris causa, the Degree of Doctor of Letters.

THE CONFERRING OF

THE ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY

GOLD MEDAL

UPON

BILL MAZER

Three years in a row the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters hailed Bill Mazer as Broadcaster of the Year. Not only is his name a household word in New York where for 12 years he has been WNEW-TV's Channel 5 sportscaster on "The Ten O'Clock News" and co-host of "Sports Extra," but he has been play-by-play football, basketball and hockey announcer for the Knicks, Rangers, Nets, Islanders and Jets, has worked the three major networks' football and golf events as well as TVS for boxing, and has written a six-figure, perennial best seller, "The Sports Answer Book." He built this extraordinary big-time career as an English major at the University of Michigan, and 16 years of experience in Buffalo sportscasting. Born in Brooklyn, he attended P.S. 230, Montauk Junior High School, and the Talmudical Academy of Yeshiva University before enrolling in the University of Michigan. After a brief stint with CBS, he moved to Buffalo where he dominated the sports scene as play-by-play broadcaster of baseball, hockey, basketball, football, wrestling and boxing for the Buffalo Bisons, Buffalo Bills, Canisius College, Niagara University, the University of Buffalo, and the Buffalo Auditorium, and hosted two nightly TV sports shows. He came back to New York in 1964 to host the first sports telephone talk show in America for the next five years. Then he reached out to other fields, hosting NBC-TV's game show, "Reach for the Stars," and doing interview shows for WOR and WHN radio, while keeping a high profile in sports. He joined WNEW-TV as its sportscasting star in 1972. Mr. Mazer is also Adjunct Professor of Communication Arts in our University's St. Vincent's College. Married to the former Dora Sudarsky for 38 years, they have three children, and reside in Scarsdale. St. John's University honored Mr. Mazer's talent and achievement with the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1980. It now gives a further salute to the sports knowledge, wisdom and integrity of Bill Mazer by conferring on him its highest honor, The University Gold Medal.
