God’s Amazing LOVE
How deep the Father’s love for us. How vast beyond all measure. That He should give His only Son. To make a wretch his treasure. We sing these words to the popular hymn but do we really think about how deep His Love for us really is.
Like most of you, I was raised in a home where I knew I was loved. While it might not have been verbally expressed all the time, there was no doubt that the love was there. Through the sacrifices made and lessons learned, I knew. Then, in august of 1979, I married my high school sweetheart. I was so full of love there wasn’t room for any more, or so I thought. But then, in December of 1981, they laid baby boy Ross in my arms, and I thought for sure there could be no more room for more love. But there was more to come. March 1984 and along comes Brad. Holding him, and looking down at that little being that God had entrusted to me, surely there was no more room for more love than that. Wrong again! Ross brought home Elisha and Brad brought Cassie and there was more room. Now, I had two daughters to love just like they were mine. But the best was still to come!! First it was Addi, and then Luke. A little break, and then Noah and Ava. I think, after your first grandchild, your heart just melts and your capacity for love for your family and friends is unlimited. But that is OUR LOVE FOR OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
What about God’s love? Can you imagine a Love so deep that He could watch His only Son endure the false accusations and condemned to be crucified. Knowing, that He had done no wrong. That He had never sinned. That he was carrying out HIS plan of salvation for the world.
Can you imagine? Watching HIS only son, as he is beaten with whips that tore the flesh from the bone. Mocked and spit upon. Watched as people laughed and ridi-culed him. Watched as he drags his cross up that hill. Watched as the nails were driven through his hands and feet. Watching as the cross was dropped into the hole tearing the flesh as it hit the bottom. Watching as he hung in agony. Laboring intensely, just to take a breath. And then to hear him say, ”My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Can you imagine, the agony our God felt, knowing that all the punishment and pain that Jesus endured, was because He LOVES US, and nothing, was as important as giving us a chance to have a relationship with the Father.
Second Peter 3 vs 9 says: “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
The next time we are able to gather around the table and partake of the Lord’s Supper I hope you will consider the FATHER’S LOVE FOR US and the sacrifice that was made on OUR behalf. Mike Dougherty
