Thank you for coming to Philly!By Joann and Bob Glasson

We hope you enjoyed the Philadelphia NABC. It takes a village to put together an NABC. Our village was filled with the best group of volunteers that anyone could ever have. See the photos of our various committee chairs on page 3.

We would also like to extend our special thanks to Wendy Sullivan and her crew from the Meeting Services Department and the TD staff for their tireless support; Paul Linxwiler and Chip Dombrowski, the Daily Bulletin editors, for keeping us all in the news; and Steve Bates and his fine directing staff for alll of their hard work.

And, of course, we want to thank all the players who attended and made the 2018 Philadelphia NABC a success.

In style for St. Patrick’s Day

The local committee of the Philadelphia NABC sponsored a special contest last week in which players were asked to identify photographs of some of the game’s great players who originally came from Philadelphia.

There was a tie between two contestants, so the committee declared that Marty Nelson of Annapolis MD and Shawn Quinn of Sugar Land TX would each receive the first-place prize.

There were more than 150 entries, and the two winners identified all 14 photos correctly (see below) and tied on the masterpoint tiebreaker with a guess of 130,000.

In second with 88.98 are the defending champions, Mark Dahl of Richmond VA and Richard Oshlag of Memphis TN.

Currently in third place with 84.75 are are Mel Colchamiro of Merrick NY and James Griffin of Sausalito CA.

Seventy-eight pairs qualified for the two-session final.

In the other semifinal bracket, Fleisher also led their opponents – John Diamond’s team – throughout the match, advancing 114-71.

Levine tops crowded Jacoby leader board

The squad captained by Mike Levine topped the qualifying round in the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams, but many other squads are close behind.

Levine scored 112.54 victory points in Saturday’s opener and will take a carryover of 24.74 VPs into today’s final. His teammates are Eddie Wold, Mike Passell, Chris Compton, Greg Hinze and David Grainger.

Adam Tannenbaum, 15, of Greenwich CT plays bridge with his father, Len Tannenbaum of Miami Beach FL. They’ve been going to two or three tournaments a year since Adam was 12, and this is their first NABC. “One time he said, ‘There’s this game I used to play when I was in my 20s,’” Adam said, describing how his dad talked him into learning bridge. Though they’re both under 50 masterpoints, it’s pretty much all from tournaments. “All my points are colored.” Adam has a brother at the University of Pennsylvania, so Philadelphia was an obvious destination choice.

The weak jump overcall, negative double, card combinations, cover or not?

West North East South 1♣ 2♠ Dbl Pass 4♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♠K Bidding commentary: As South, one seldom

opens 1NT with a five-card minor and a four-card major. However, it’s not a bad idea with four diamonds, five clubs, 15-16 HCP and strong major-suits doubletons. Example: ♠A Q ♥K 4 ♦Q J 6 3 ♣A 8 7 5 4.

After South opens 1♣, West’s 2♠ bid (a weak jump overcall) is the equivalent of a weak two-bid opener. North’s negative double of 2♠ promises four hearts with 9+ HCP (possibly 8 HCP with five hearts). Keep in mind that the double forces partner to bid at the three level. South, with extras, bids 4♥, not 3♥. To make game with a 4-4 fit in a major,

24 HCP between the two hands is usually more than enough. A 4-4 fit usually plays one trick better than notrump.

Play commentary: As South, win the ♠A, cross to a club honor and run the ♥9, not the queen! If you lead the ♥Q and East plays low, your next heart play will be low to the 10, West pitching a spade. In order to repeat the finesse, you have to return to dummy with a club. Not so fast, East ruffs and leads a spade to West. If West leads a third club, East ruffs, and the ♦A defeats the contract one trick. If, instead, West shifts to the ♦Q, the defense can take two diamonds, a spade and two club ruffs!

Actually, 10 tricks are readily available. Say you lead the ♥9 at trick three (key play), East plays low and you follow with the 4. Now the lead remains in dummy and you lead the queen. No matter what East does, you can take four hearts tricks without having to return to dummy to repeat the finesse. You wind up with four heart tricks, five club tricks and the ♠A: 10 tricks.

Defensive commentary: As East, if the ♥Q is led from dummy at trick three, don’t cover. The second heart must be won in declarer’s hand. Declarer then has no way to return to dummy to repeat the heart finesse. If a diamond is led to the king, you kill it with your ace, and if a club is led, you ruff. As declarer, play the same with J-9-x (x)

(1) Natural, 5+.(2) Limit raise: diamonds, minors, or balanced. In 3NT after the ♦9 lead, South discouraged,

suggesting he had the ♥K.3NT is an uninspiring contract. Maybe the right

approach is to rely on the club finesse. So you play the ♣K and a club to the jack, which holds. Phew! Now you take the diamond finesse. If it loses to the ♦Q, you can reassess what to do. When it holds, you are in great shape. Take care to lead a heart to the ace, then don’t cash the ♣A or you squeeze your hand. You plan to score two spades, one heart, four diamonds and two clubs.

When you lead a second diamond, however, South shows out! This is the full deal: ♠ 9 5 ♥ 5 3 2 ♦ A Q 5 3 ♣ Q 9 7 2 ♠ A Q ♠ 7 6 4 ♥ 10 9 7 4 ♥ A Q ♦ K J 10 9 8 ♦ 7 6 4 ♣ K 5 ♣ A J 8 6 3 ♠ K J 10 8 3 2 ♥ K J 8 6 ♦ 2 ♣ 10 4

Nice defense by North, Simon Cope, of England. He, along with Peter Crouch, also of the UK, won the Silodor Open Pairs.

After registering your minus 200, you check Deep Finesse to see what the best outcome for declarer is. As usual, you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting. DF tells you 3NT is cold. How do you make it? Simple: Play the ♦K at trick two. If the defenders win the first or second diamond, you set up diamonds using the club entry. If the defense ducks twice, you switch your attention to clubs and take four tricks there.

Note: At least two alternate pairs will be seated. Pairs near the cut line should check with the director in charge.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with

the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Your Gold Medal is Within Reach

Realize your dreams of winning a world championship medal when the World Bridge Federation hosts the 2018 World Bridge Series in Orlando FL Sept. 22– Oct. 6.

The World Bridge Series offers a variety of championships, all of which are transnational – enabling players from anywhere in the world to come together as teammates or in partnership to compete.

The venue is the magnificent Marriott Orlando World, where the WBF has obtained special rates.

The opening ceremony will be held on Friday, Sept. 21. The first events to be contested are the Open, Women’s and Senior Team Championships; the Rosenblum Open Teams will start on Saturday, Sept. 22, and the McConnell Women’s Teams and the Rand Senior Teams start a day later.

The team championships are followed by the Open, Women’s and Senior Pairs.

In addition to these and other championship events, there will be a number of WBF events of one or two days’ duration (pairs or Swiss) available for those wishing to participate in shorter tournaments.

Players in good standing with their national bridge organizations are eligible to compete in any of these events, provided they meet all the WBF eligibility requirements.

Please go to worldbridge.org for more information.

Charity begins at AmazonSmile

For every eligible purchase you make on Amazon.com, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates .5% of the purchase price (less shipping, gift wrap charges, etc.) to your chosen charity. Why not make the ACBL Educational Foundation or the ACBL Charity Foundation your chosen charity?

When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com with the added bonus that AmazonSmile will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. Picture this: If every ACBL member were to designate one of the two ACBL charity funds as their AmazonSmile recipient and spend $200, $168,000 would flow to the Educational Foundation and the Charity Foundation!

Can I use my existing Amazon.com account on AmazonSmile?

Yes, you use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, wish list, wedding or baby registry and other account settings are also the same.

How do I select a charitable organization?Go to smile.amazon.com using your computer or

mobile device. On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you’ll select a charitable organization before you begin shopping. Choose either ACBL Charity Foundation or ACBL Educational Foundation.

Tournament director Melody Euler wasn’t wearing any green, but she found a clover-print scarf left by a player sitting on a table, and decided to try it on. Just then, the scarf’s owner showed up.

Companologist’s delight?By Barry Rigal

Readers of these columns are always handicapped by the bell going off. When faced with a problem, you are always led to the critical decision and thus imperceptibly biased in your thought process.

So let’s look at this deal (rotated) from the second final session of the Rockwell Mixed Pairs: Dummy Dlr: East ♠ A K Q J 5 Vul: Both ♥ K 5 2 Bd: 13 ♦ A 9 6 ♣ K 9 You ♠ 9 7 4 2 ♥ A 10 8 ♦ K 8 7 5 ♣ Q 10

West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Partner leads a club, and you win the queen and return the suit. Partner wins the ace and clears the suit, declarer winning the jack on the third round.

When declarer advances the ♦Q, do you win or duck?

Answer: It doesn’t matter because you can’t beat 3NT anymore: ♠ A K Q J 5 ♥ K 5 2 ♦ A 9 6 ♣ K 9 ♠ 8 3 ♠ 9 7 4 2 ♥ J 6 4 ♥ A 10 8 ♦ 10 2 ♦ K 8 7 5 ♣ A 8 7 5 4 2 ♣ Q 10 ♠ 10 6 ♥ Q 9 7 3 ♦ Q J 4 3 ♣ J 6 3

Note that if you fail to play the ♣10 at trick one, you won’t beat the game. Declarer can survive by not winning the ♣J, but will he?
