In last week’s gospel, Jesus sent his disciples out and told them to have no fear. Today we hear him give further instructions and they reflect some Christian paradoxes. For example; “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Those worthy of Jesus are the ones who take up their cross and follow him. We’re not expected to seek out suffering and place

ourselves in harm’s way merely for the sake of it. Taking up one’s cross refers to managing any and all of the difficulties and challenges that come with following Jesus. We don’t choose our crosses, and there is certainly ample evidence these days that all crosses are not equal. Whatever challenges come our way, Jesus promises life to those who follow his way.

Saint Junipero Serra’s Story - Feast Day July 1 In 1776, when the American Revolution was beginning in the east, another part of the future United States was being born in California. That year a gray-robed Franciscan founded Mission San Juan Capistrano, now famous for its annually returning swallows. San Juan

was the seventh of nine missions established under the direction of this indomitable Spaniard.

Born on Spain’s island of Mallorca, Serra entered the Franciscan Order taking the name of Saint Francis’ childlike companion, Brother Juniper. Until he was 35, he spent most of his time in the classroom—first as a student of theology and then as a professor. He also became famous for his preaching. Suddenly he gave it all up and followed the yearning that had begun years before when he heard about the missionary work of Saint Francis Solano in South America. Junipero’s desire was to convert native peoples in the New World.

Arriving by ship at Vera Cruz, Mexico, he and a companion walked the 250 miles to Mexico City. On the way Junipero’s left leg became infected by an insect bite and would remain a cross—sometimes life-threatening—for the rest of his life. For 18 years, he worked in central Mexico and in the Baja Peninsula. He became president of the missions there.

Enter politics: the threat of a Russian invasion south from Alaska. Charles III of Spain ordered an expedition to beat Russia to the territory. So the last two conquistadors—one military, one spiritual—began their quest. José de Galvez persuaded Junipero to set out with him for present-day Monterey, California. The first mission founded after the 900-mile journey north was San Diego in 1769. That year a shortage of food almost canceled the

expedition. Vowing to stay with the local people, Junipero and another friar began a novena in preparation for St. Joseph’s day, March 19, the scheduled day of departure. On that day, the relief ship arrived.

Other missions followed: Monterey/Carmel (1770); San Antonio and San Gabriel (1771); San Luís Obispo (1772); San Francisco and San Juan Capistrano (1776); Santa Clara (1777); San Buenaventura (1782). Twelve more were founded after Serra’s death.

Junipero made the long trip to Mexico City to settle great differences with the military commander. He arrived at the point of death. The outcome was substantially what Junipero sought: the famous “Regulation” protecting the Indians and the missions. It was the basis for the first significant legislation in California, a “Bill of Rights” for Native Americans.

Because the Native Americans were living a nonhuman life from the Spanish point of view, the friars were made their legal guardians. The Native Americans were kept at the mission after baptism lest they be corrupted in their former haunts—a move that has brought cries of “injustice” from some moderns.

Junipero’s missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from non-Christian native peoples. Through it all his unquenchable zeal was fed by prayer each night, often from midnight till dawn. He baptized over 6,000 people and confirmed 5,000. His travels would have circled the globe. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith but also a decent standard of living. He won their love, as witnessed especially by their grief at his death. He is buried at Mission San Carlo Borromeo, Carmel, and was beatified in 1988. Pope Francis canonized him in Washington, D.C., on September 23, 2015.

Now Celebrating Mass in the Church At www.sjbssparish.org, please sign-up individually all family members attending a weekend Mass. If you don’t have internet access, please call the Parish Office at 301-622-1122.

Martin Laird, a contemporary contemplative teacher and Augustinian friar, reflects, “When pummeled by too many thoughts a long walk would cure me of the punch-drunk feeling of lifelessness. The normal route led along open fields, and not infrequently I would see a man walking his four Kerry blue terriers. These were amazing dogs. Bounding energy, elastic grace, and electric speed, they coursed and leapt through open fields. It was invigorating just to watch these muscular stretches of freedom race along. Three of the four dogs did this, I should say. The fourth stayed behind and, off to the side of its owner, ran in tight circles. I could never understand why it did this; it had all the room in the world to leap and bound. One day I was bold enough to ask the owner, ‘Why does your dog do that? Why does it run in little circles instead of running with the others?’ He explained that before he acquired the dog, it had lived practically all its life in a cage and could only exercise by running in circles. For this dog, to run meant to run in tight circles. So instead of bounding through the open fields that surrounded it, it ran in circles.”

We are all running in circles. Each one of us is trapped in tight loops of thinking, orbiting the illusory center called ego. These circles we cannot break out of are all the modes of conventional thinking that we tend to rely on to move through our days. It’s just what everyone thinks; it’s mass consciousness. It is unreflective, unconscious, and fully egocentric. These same tight loops of thinking, conventional thinking, contribute to and possibly even form the basis of structures of racism, sexism, homophobia, and any kind of injustice or oppression. Conventional thinking led to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and, most recently, Rayshard Brooks. If conventional thinking had its way, the slaves never would have been freed.

Our conventional thinking hides social oppression and suffering. According to Iris Marion Young, our conventional thinking takes the form of “unquestioned norms, habits, and symbols, in the assumptions underlying institutional rules and the collective consequences of following those rules. It names ‘an enclosing structure of forces and barriers which tends to the immobilization and

reduction of a group or category of people.’ In this extended sense oppression refers to the vast and deep injustices that some groups suffer as a consequence of often unconscious assumptions and reactions of well-meaning people in ordinary interactions, media and cultural stereotypes, and structural features of bureaucratic hierarchies and market mechanisms—in

short the normal processes of everyday life.” When the winds of change begin to blow, they are inevitably blocked by conventional thinking. Changing anything can be difficult on the best of days. Change is nigh impossible when we’re trapped in these cages of conventionalism. Anthony DeMello writes about this rigid unwillingness to change by imagining a suffering person

coming to a therapist: “imagine a client who’s up to his nose in a cesspool, okay? Yeah, he calls it liquid excrement. And he’s coming to the doctor, and you know what he’s saying to him? He’s asking the doctor, ‘Could you help me, so people won’t make waves?’ The client doesn’t want to get out of the cesspool. Oh, no, no, no. Get out? For heaven’s sake, no. Just help me so they won’t make waves. That’s what he wants. He doesn’t want to get out.”

Jesus calls us to abandon these modes of thinking when he says “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Family is often the carrier of conventional thinking. Metaphorically speaking, our habits and everyday interior self-talk can be as negative and as smothering as a dysfunctional family. As long as we give any priority to our ways of thinking over God and Jesus, we will not know the unimaginable bliss and mysteries of the kingdom.

Therefore, Jesus repeats a central Gospel paradox: “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” We must die to live. And, this means we absolutely must abandon all thinking, all that is we think is us. We lose our lives by shedding conventional thinking. In effect, we let go of all thinking and, simultaneously, sink into God. This is essential to dig up and root out the evil shoots of injustice and oppression, especially in the form of institutional racism.
