FAZtor’s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Last Tuesday, I was at a dinner at Mission Dolores with some priests of our Archdiocese in honor of our Archbishop George Niederauer, who is about to retire. Happily our former Archbishop and former head of the Congregation for the

Doctrine of Faith, Cardinal William Levada who is now temporarily residing at the Archbishop’s house after his own retirement, was able to join us at dinner. I had the opportunity to talk to both dignitaries at cocktail time, but I was also seated at the same table with the Cardinal. He mentioned about his long time association and friendship with the Archbishop, since their first years in high school. He said that he used to play the clarinet in the band and Archbishop George played the trombone. The Cardinal jokingly whispered “but he was not that good.” Archbish-op George acknowledged the Cardinal’s claim later by saying that if there were four trombones in the band, he would be the fourth player; if there were five players, he would be the fifth; and if there had been six trombones, for sure he would have been playing the sixth trombone.

It was an evening of fun listening to two bishops re-calling their great bond of friendship and remembering their good old days. It reminds me of an old story that I just need to modify and modernize about two other bish-ops:

Bishop Smith and Bishop Young are walking down the street when Young turns to Smith and says, "Brother Smith, if you had two of those top-of-the-line Mercedes Benz cars, with all the gears, power windows, GPS Navi-gation, mp3 player, back-up cameras and all of that, ex-actly the same, would you give me one?" Smith says, "Brother Young, how long do we go back? Thirty years? We've been best friends since school, and if I had two of those Mercedes, top-of-the-line cars with all the trimmings, exactly the same, yeah, I would give the other one to you." So, they keep walking. After a couple of minutes, Smith turns to Young and says, "Brother Young, if you had two of those luxury, playboy- type yachts, you know, with all the modern conveniences, and they were exactly the same, would you give one of them to me?" Young says, "Brother Smith, you and I are like broth-ers, we graduated together in high school, we graduated together in College, we’ve gone to the same seminary and we were ordained at the same time. If I had two of those luxury playboy yachts, exactly the same with all the modern conveniences, then yeah Brother Smith, I really would give the other one to you." They keep walking. A couple of minutes later, Bishop Young turns to Bishop Smith, "Brother Smith, if you had two puppies..." "Now hold on there! Brother Young, you KNOW I've got two Puppies!"

Can you give an extra time for the Lord this summer?

Last paragraph from last week’s FAZtor’s Notes: Enjoy your day. God is always by your side!

Surely that’s good news. So then, “go forth and announce the good news!”

FILM SHOWING OF THE DVD SERIES

“CATHOLICISM” Thursday evenings from 7-8pm

until August 23rd in the Flanagan Center

Here are the topics for the remaining DVDs: August 2nd 7. Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven : The Mystery of the Liturgy and the Eucharist August 9th 8. A Vast Company of Witnesses: The Communion of Saints August 16th 9. The Fire of His Love : Prayer and the Life of the Spirit August 23rd 10. World Without End : The Last Things

Transmitting the faith Faith, a gift of the Father which inspires the abandonment of oneself to the Son Jesus, ushers the faithful into the life of communion with God and makes possible their entry into the Church. With the proclama-tion of the Year of Faith, Chapter three of the Document recalls, Benedict XVI reaffirmed the primacy of faith in the sense that “the essential elements of the faith, professed by all believers over the centuries, are re-stated and ex-amined, always in a new manner, so as to bear witness to the faith in a coherent way in an entirely different his-torical situation from the past” (n.94). Obstacles to the faith can be within the Church (a faith lived passively and privately, a person’s not feeling need to be instructed in the faith, a dichotomy between faith and life) or from outside the Christian life (secularization, nihilism, consumerism, hedonism). Moreover signs that awareness is being raised as well as the witness to formation in the particular Churches, in the renewal of catechesis. All Christians are called to the task of evangeliza-tion. They must re-awaken their own baptismal identity, in particular, the members of consecrated and contempla-tive life and of groups and movements. They must all be prepared to account for the reason of their faith to any-one who asks them. The rich contribution of the “new evangelizers” to spreading the Good News demands a further deepening of the relationship between charismatic gifts and hierarchical gifts for the good of the particular Churches and of the universal Church. The Year of Faith is a pressing appeal to conver-sion so that every Christian and every community, trans-formed by grace, may bear abundant fruits. Mentioned among the fruits of the faith are ecumenical endeavors, the search for truth, interreligious dialogue and the cour-age to report infidelities and scandals in the Christian community. There is an intrinsic relationship between faith and love: faith is expressed in love and love without faith would be philanthropy.

Living Stewardship Now Are you good at feeding people? Use your skills. Help with coffee-and-doughnuts gatherings, cook for a parish supper or retreat, prepare meals for an overnight shelter, organize a bake sale to benefit a parish ministry, volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Not a cook? Send do-nations to Food for the Poor, Catholic Relief Services, or Catholic Charities.

BREAD OF HEAVEN When the land is stricken with famine, Elisha the prophet believes God will provide, and he is given twenty barley loaves and some grain. A small crowd eats it, and some is left over. Jesus feeds thousands with five loaves and two fish. Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, blesses the bread, and distributes it. The crowd eat their fill, and the leftovers fill twelve baskets. These are the actions of the priest today as we are fed the bread of life. Elisha trusted that God would provide, and God did. God indeed provides overflowing abundance. Christ gives us himself as food, totally and completely. We in turn must feed oth-er people. Feeding people in our parish creates a wel-coming atmosphere. Feeding poor people helps them stop worrying about their next meal. Feeding those in a crisis or natural disaster keeps them alive. Feeding people is God’s work, and our work, too.
