The Holy Family The Scriptures proclaimed on the feast of the Holy Family speak of clearly defined roles for parents, children, husbands and wives. Quite naturally, the sacred authors thought about the way families were structured in their day. For many people these structures may not seem to fit our situation today. Nevertheless, they give us principles that can be applied to modern times. I think we can find some basic principles in the Scriptures that can help us live healthy, holy lives in our families.

Every marriage and family requires a basic respect by each member for all other members. The family or marriage in which there is a lack of respect for man, woman or child cannot be healthy or happy. St. Paul says that we are to put on all those other virtues which are characteristic of the Christian, but above all we are to love. Life in the Christian family is based on love. No matter who we are, obedience must be a part of our life. It is appropriate for children to be obedient to their parents, for couples to be obedient to each other, for all people to be obedient to the will of God. Love and respect are the foundation of authentic obedience.

Why are respect, love and obedience necessary? The answer comes from the life of Jesus. Jesus, although He is the Son of God, was truly human like us in all things but sin. He freely chose to submit Himself in obedience to His parents. Jesus’ respect, love and obedience are based on His respect, love and obedience toward His Father, the source of all authority in heaven and earth. As Baptized persons, brothers and sisters of Jesus, we are to be like Him in all things. He has set the example to show us how to relate in true happiness to one another and to God. This Christmas season we are celebrating Emmanuel – God with us! Our God is here to strengthen us in our desire to live happy, holy family lives.

Father David

Thank You!

I wish to extend a sincere “thank you” to all who helped in any way to make our Christmas celebrations truly prayerful and inspiring. Whether you helped decorate, participated in one of the liturgical ministries, or supported the parish in some other way, including your generous financial gifts to the parish, I sincerely thank you.

On behalf of the parish staff, I would like to wish all of you a very blessed and happy new year. May our Lord be with you and bestow upon you all that you need as you serve Him with renewed spirit and love.

Father David

We Offer Our Prayers

We Make House Calls! —Communion for the Homebound—

If you or a loved one are temporarily or permanently homebound and unable to attend Mass, the St. James Ministry of Care can bring Holy Communion to your home on a regular basis. To have a qualified and trained St. James lay parishioner bring Communion to YOUR home, please call the St. James Ministry Center at 630-469-7540.

If you should be admitted to any of the local hospitals and would like a visit from Father David, please call the Ministry Center and ask the secretary to inform him. If the person hospitalized is unable to call personally, an immediate family member may call us. Privacy laws in effect allow us to respond only to the hospitalized person and/or immediate family member requesting a visit. Fr. David will do his best to respond by making the visit to the hospital. It is helpful if the person, when admitted, indicates on the hospital registration form, that he or she requests a visit from the Catholic chaplain on staff at the hospital. However, to insure that St. James the Apostle Parish is aware of your hospitalization, it is best to call the Ministry Center directly.

If you are aware of any upcoming surgery or hospital stay for yourself and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Father David would be happy to administer the sacrament before you are admitted to the hospital. Please call him at the Ministry Center or speak to him before or after Mass. The Ministry Center phone number is (630)469-7540.

Every Family Is Holy

Pope Francis was not the first to urge us to see and be holy people. Saint Paul, in Colossians 3:12-17, calls us holy and beloved – and lists holy behaviors. It recalls the Old Testament covenants and the very peak of creation told in Genesis – human life. • How will I, in phone call or letter, speak words

of love to my siblings and parents? • How will I be ever more holy this day? • How will I help families who grieve or hunger or

want?

We are blessed to have you with us today—and every weekend! Our liturgies are enhanced by your presence and participation. We hope that you find the experience here at St. James to include a warm and inspiring celebration of the Eucharist and the faith that we profess.

Welcome to St. James!

Please Support Our Advertisers

Our Sunday bulletin is one of the primary ways we communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J. S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers—many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. We ask you to consider patronizing these businesses and when you do, take a moment to tell the owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. Thanks!

Christian Service Ministries Low Gluten Hosts

For those with wheat allergies or gluten intolerance,

the Diocese of Joliet has designated two approved sources for low gluten hosts: The

Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual

Adoration in Clyde, Missouri and

Parish Crossroads, LLC in

Zionsville, Indiana. Because

religious goods retail stores sell

wafers that are suitable for many

different denominations, but may not meet the

requirements of the Roman Catholic Church, we ask

that our parishioners use hosts we have supplied for

them. We order our low gluten hosts from the

Benedictine Sisters in Clyde.

When a parishioner needing a low gluten host

arrives for Mass, they take their host from their pyx and place it in a glass dish kept on the credence

table. They then place the dish on the altar. This

keeps their host segregated to avoid contamination

with wheat products, and allows them to receive the

Precious Body at Mass without concern for their

health. During the Sign of Peace, our low gluten

individuals line up behind the ministers who are

serving at the Mass and follow the ministers forward

to the bottom of the steps, where they will wait for

the priest to bring them the Precious Body.

We are pleased to provide a pyx and the host

packets, which must be kept in the freezer until

brought to church, for any parishioner needing low

gluten because of an allergy or illness. If you need

low gluten hosts, you may contact Rubi at the Ministry Center to make the arrangements:

630.469.7540.

Things are very busy around St. James the Apostle during the holiday season. A lot of people are getting involved with a variety of projects that spread the kingdom of God here at St. James. It also seems that when a lot of people get involved there usually a lot of Knights that are helping.

The Knights Blood Drive during Thanksgiving weekend was another success. Pictured here are the Knights Blood Drive Chairman Kurt Padera along with Netra from Versiti and Knights Steve Gawron and Vinnie Romano. The Knights choose this weekend to have the blood drive as it has traditionally been a weekend where there are serious shortages of blood.

The Christmas Basket Program has become a valued tradition at St. James with the generosity of our parishioners helping countless numbers of people in need. There is a lot of work that goes into the organization of this program with many parishioners helping Chairperson Dawn Fitzpatrick and her husband Knight Mike. There is also a lot of work in collecting the packages and distributing them and the Knights were well represented in this area. Pictured here are just one group of helpers including Knights Steve Gawron, Vince Spinosa, Boy Monsalud, Ray Klein, Mike Progar, Jim O’Malley, Gilbert Monsalud, and Vinnie Romano. It also looks like we might have gotten a little ecclesiastical help from the Vatican.

The Art & Environment Committee always does a marvelous job of making our worship space beautiful for Christmas. Once again, many were needed to help with the preparation of the trees and other décor. Knights could be found in action assisting this year.
