Hello,
I pray you had a Happy Thanksgiving celebrating with family and friends. Today we begin a new year. So Happy New Year...at least liturgically. As you may have noticed on your way into church, the hym-nals are new.
However, the Church doesn’t really bring in the new (liturgical) year with a celebration and fanfare. Rather it begins the year low key. It begins with preparation for a big celebration. The Church begins the new year with Advent, a time of preparing for the celebration of the incarnation of the Second Person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. Advent is also a reminder to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ at the end of world.
It is in this light that we have the Gospel today. Jesus warns us to stay awake. We do not know when the Son of Man (Jesus) will come back to earth from Heaven. Jesus warns that He will come back again at the time we least expect. After two thousand years it is easy to assume the Second Coming is not going to be today, or this hour, or this minute, or this second. However, this is not a good assumption to make. If the end of time happened today, or your personal life ended today, would you be ready? Are there things you need to say, things you need to do today, friendships you need to repair, family members you need to reconcile with? Is your soul in a state of grace with no mortal sins attached to it? Are you prepared?
Peace of Christ, Father Vogel

FUN FACTS ABOUT ADVENT
The liturgical color for Advent is PURPLE for preparation. The color purple symbolizes a penitential spirit as we prepare our hearts and lives to celebrate the birth of Jesus as well as royalty as we acknowledge him Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
The word Advent derives from the Latin “adventas” which means “COMING”. We wait with expectation and joy.
HOPE is a predominant theme of Advent. The Israelites hoped for a Messiah to come, and Christ entered the world. We are hopeful for the arrival of Christ again into the world.
Advent focuses on LIGHT as opposed to darkness. Christ enters our dark world and casts away the darkness of sin to redeem us. He will come again as the light of the world.

So what does that have to do with Noah?
In this season of Advent, we remember our place in salvation history. We remember that we, who again and again break the covenant established with God, are offered salvation through that same God who came as a baby to live, suffer, die and rise so that we may live forever with him.
In today’s first reading, Isaiah prophesies that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established and raised, and that instruction shall come out from Zion. Then God will judge between nations. Saint Paul warns the Romans that salvation is imminent, and that they should cast off sin and darkness and choose to live in the light of Jesus Christ. In Mathew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the people of Noah’s time who were living carelessly when the flood came, and warns that as it was then, so it is now. They must be watchful and ready, for God will come at an hour we do not expect. (from Catholic Faith Content)
Jesus tells us the exact “hour” is not important. What is crucial is that we not postpone our repentance, that we be ready for Him—spiritually and morally—when He comes. For He will surely come, He tells us—like a thief in the night, like the flood in the time of Noah. (from Scott Hahn)
ADVENT
is a time to
Prepare
for the Lord!
St. Nicholas was a real life man who loved God, children, and helped the poor. Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas’ life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as a protector and helper of those in need. Nicholas was loved for one reason. He loved. He loved God and God’s people. Children all over the world know of St. Nicholas and love him. He is called by many names: in Germany, Kriss Kringle; in France, Pere Noel; and in America he is known as Santa Claus.
The Church celebrates the Feast of St. Nicholas this Friday, December 6th.
