LITURGY CORNERThis week we celebrate theFeast of the ImmaculateConception, which is a holyday of obligation. The Feastof the ImmaculateConception is celebrated on

December 8th. So what exactly is the Feast of the ImmaculateConception? The Feast of the Immaculate Conception does notcelebrate the conception of Jesus, as some believe, but ratherthe conception of his mother, Mary. Catholics believe that Marywas free from original sin from the moment of her conceptionand that through God’s grace, Mary remained sinlessthroughout her life. The Feast of the Immaculate Conceptioncan be a wonderful opportunity for families to talk about Maryand how we each have a specific job to do in welcoming andfollowing Jesus.

FAITH AT HOMEDuring Advent, we also remember andcelebrate that one day we will see God face toface. The joy of this “second coming” is

anticipated as much as the great event of his first comingin history is remembered. Adults: What can I do thisAdvent to show I am as concerned about my encounterwith Christ as I am about my retirement benefits andmortgage payments? Children: How can I help otherchildren in need during this time of Advent so that theycan celebrate Christmas better? A Family Perspective:In family life, we try to prepare ourselves for many futurethings: our next vacation, our children's education, ourretirement. We are careful not to allow ourselves to becaught by surprise so that we can handle any challengesour family may face. Today's Gospel reminds us that weare called to be just as attentive and alert to the comingof the Son of Man so that it will not catch us unprepared. This means attending to our family's spiritual life ascarefully as we attend to other important family matters. As you gather as a family, talk about a time when youreceived surprise visitors at your house, perhaps aneighbor who stopped by or a relative who arrivedunannounced. Was your household prepared to receivethis unannounced guest? What might your family havedone differently if you knew ahead of time that this visitorwas going to arrive? Jesus told his disciples that no oneknows when the Son of Man will return, except theFather. During Advent, we not only prepare ourselves tocelebrate the birth of Jesus, we also check to see if weare doing all the things that will keep us ready to receiveJesus when he comes again. Talk about how your familycan recommit to daily prayer, reading Scripture andstaying faithful to God's commandments. Pray togetherthat through this Advent season your family will be moreprepared to receive Jesus when he comes again.

My dear friends,

We have hit December. We can really say now “Christmas is around the corner”. We are all aware of how thismeaningful celebration has been losing its religious identity. We celebrate every year that the Lord was incarnate in thehuman race and became one of us. We celebrate that He became the Emmanuel (God is with us) and therefore, we areno longer alone in our lives. Every year we hear the story of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to give birth to Jesus, the Son of God, and no one hosted them. Jesus ended up being born in a manger. Every year we celebrate that Hecomes to us, to our lives and wants to be born in us. He is looking for a manger to be born again and to bring ushappiness and peace with his loving presence. How can He come if we don’t turn our hearts into a manger where He candwell? Yes, we have to give Him room. We have to prepare our hearts for his visit. Let us welcome the Lord into ourlives! There are many opportunities here at OLM to help us to prepare ourselves and our families to celebrate Christmasin its full meaning.

· On Monday November 20th we drove the parish truck to Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Victories in Paterson withmany turkeys and lots of food for Thanksgiving. They are so grateful for your generosity. I saw their pastor (who is one of myclassmates) and he asked me to thank you for being so good to the poor people in his parish. When he said that I felt very proud of you.

· Last Sunday on the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe we set up the “Giving Tree”. There are 2 trees in ourChurch. One is in the vestibule and the other is inside the church. I asked Deacon Vinnie to put it inside the church becauseit’s a visible sign of how generous the parish is with those in need. Thank you for being so good with people less fortunate. There will be many happy children on Christmas with your gifts.

· On Tuesday night we had a wonderful event directed by our Religious Formation Program. We called it “Advent FamilyNight” where we met children and parents together. It was so beautiful to see so many parents gathered at the church tryingto find the way to help their children learn their faith. We told the parents many ways in which they can help their children toreally understand the meaning of Christmas. I am sure this will help to bring the spirit of Christmas home. May every home of every family in our parish become a dwelling place for the Saviour to be born.

· This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent: We will bless our Advent Wreath and light the first candle. Christ is the lightwhich illuminates our lives. May we accept and welcome Him to all the areas of our lives. With His help, may we alltransform the dark spots of our lives; let us shine with the power of His light.

· December the 2nd at 6:30 pm after Mass, the Knight of Columbus will host their Christmas Party in our Parish Center. It is an opportunity to get together for Christmas and celebrate as a parish family.

· On Sunday December the 3rd after the 11:00 am Mass, there will be a get together to welcome Fr. Roberto, Fr. Milton andDeacon Kamil to our parish. I thank you for this idea, however, I am looking forward to using this time as a Christmascelebration to wish each other Merry Christmas.

· On December the 18th we will have our Parish Penance Service. This is a great opportunity to clean our heart and let Jesusbe born in it. In addition, we will have confessions for our children in our Religious Formation Program. We realized thatmost of the time, they have their First Reconciliation for First Communion and then they don’t do it again until theirConfirmation. We want to give them the opportunity to go to Confession at least twice a year. Our Confessions for ourchildren will take place on Sunday 12/03 at 9:30 am, Sunday 12/10 at 9:30 am and Tuesday 12/12 at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.Our children will not need to come on a different day; it will take place during their regular Religious Formation Program.

· On December the 10th at 3:00 pm we will have once again in our parish the Hanover Wind Symphony. Every Sunday we areselling tickets at the doors of the church and also at the rectory during the week. I can’t wait to see it; everyone has told mehow beautiful it is. I am sure this is also one more opportunity to prepare our hearts for the Nativity of our Lord and Saviour.

As you see there are enough chances here at OLM to prepare ourselves and our families to welcome the Lord onChristmas. Let us use these opportunities to live the mystery of Christmas with true faith and love of the Lord. The birthof Jesus has been commercialized and used as an opportunity to make money. We have taught our childrenunintentionally that Christmas is related to gifts. For us as true people of faith it should be more than that. Christmas isJesus’s birthday. It is celebrating that the Lord comes to us and stays in our hearts and lives.

God bless you all,

Fr. Roberto
