The newer LED solution was practical, cost effective, weather resistant and reliable, and Suncorp decided to proceed with the newer technology.

Suncorp Stadium Signage

After a brief hiatus, Suncorp Stadium lights up the Brisbane Skyline again

In 2004 SignManager completed a landmark project. Suncorp had just renewed the

naming rights to Suncorp Stadium and asked SignManager to design signage concepts

that would make this an iconic landmark.

Suncorp's brief was that the signage design had to be simple, reliable, meet their

deadline and add value to the client's brand over the term of the sponsorship.

SignManager presented a design that included two major neon signs measuring 26m

x 3.6m (on the main entries) and a mixture of illuminated, spotlight and digitally

printed signage. In total there were 26 different sign types to be manufactured and

installed to adequately cover branding requirements. Within a 10 week timeframe,

through the process of design, engineering, council permits, manufacture and

installation, Suncorp's iconic signs became a reality.

Over the years, the signage at Suncorp Stadium performed well. However a violent

hail storm in November 2014 damaged the fragile glass neon in one of the two

external stadium signs. It was irreparable, so Suncorp briefed SignManager to redesign

them and incorporate the latest weather resistant power-saving LED technology.

As Suncorp favoured the aesthetics of the previous neon signage construction,

SignManager researched suitable alternatives and presented a market-leading LED

product for Suncorp's consideration. SignManager demonstrated the product's

impact resistance, power consumption ROI data and a light intensity study which

compared the original neon product against the LED alternative. The newer LED

solution was practical, cost effective, weather resistant and reliable, and Suncorp

decided to proceed with the newer technology.

The project was completed in six months despite some challenges. The first

challenge the team faced involved delays with the manufacture and delivery of the

LED components that were made and shipped from the United States. Different time

zones made communication difficult and led to some late night phone calls to follow

up the service centre and couriers.

There were also restrictions on when the installation could occur. SignManager's

contractors liaised with the Stadium's facilities team to coordinate installation around

major sporting and music events. It was imperative that there were no disruptions to

Suncorp Stadium's program. It was also compulsory for one sign to remain

operational at all times, therefore flexibility and understanding was a must for our

installation contractor. They did an exceptional job and followed through efficiently.

Suncorp stands to benefit greatly in utilising LED technology in these signs.

The power consumption ROI data weighted in at a 50-60% reduction in comparison

with the former sign. That equates to a saving of $10-16K per annum. The impact

resistance of the product and long term efficiencies were key aspects in the

decision-making process.

The two Suncorp Stadium signs are icons in the Australian skyline and the biggest

single site installation in the Southern Hemisphere. Senior Project Manager, Danny

Dalton, along with the SignManager team are very proud of the planning, design and

craftsmanship which is showcased in this landmark project. It confirms

SignManager's credibility as one of Australia's most capable sign designers.
