Country fans ... ? I had great seats to theGarth Brooks concert in Toronto, somethinglike Row 16. But waddyaknow, it was just likebeing at a rock concert, only worse. Therethey were, 40 -year old pot-bellied drunkswith asses two axe handles across, standing, some on their seats, trying to do the two-stepthat looked like a one -legged man at an ass -kicking contest. And then, there were theguys. (EC: Two axe handles . . . ?)

Is the hurtin' at retail over ... ? With allthe bad blood that was being spilled up anddown the Yonge Street strip and beyond, Ithought the Capitol product presentation wouldbe a bust. But the retailers were out in force.Store managers from as far away as Vancouver

were hayin' and yayin' as each new releasewas flashed on the SkyDome's giantJumbotron. When Capitol's president DeaneCameron began making the presentation, hisvoice echoed around the SkyDome andbounced back with a split-second delay. Thisprompted his remark, "I must sound like God,"which got a chuckle out of the crowd. (EC:Oh! That's what he meant . . . I)Will that be Rockhead or Roxette???Roxette isn't from Vancouver, but Rockheadis. It's all in how you interpret the language.Someone told me Roxette means Rockhead inSwedish. (EC: You blew it . . . so admit it!!!)

Did you say that Paul . . . ? Just whenthings were quieting down among the majorrecord retailers, along comes an article in therecent Canadian Retailer on HMV. MarkEvans, a reporter for the Financial Post, puttogether a superb article on HMV. By the way,HMV won this year's Retail Council ofCanada's Innovative Retailer of the YearAward. Hence, I presume, the article. And,when I checked last, neither the CanadianRetailer nor the Financial Post are owned inpart or wholly by Thorn EMI. Anyway, aftera great piece, a kudo of sorts from A&A's DanWhitt, and a definite dart from Sam, the kickerfrom HMV' s Paul Alofs will really send shockwaves up and beyond Yonge Street. Hesuggested that "there is simply not enoughroom for the six major players (retailers) andit is only a matter of time before the weak linksdisappear." (EC: True feelings are hard todisguise . . . I)

Madonna... Yeah!!! If you think Madonna'srecords sell mega -millions, wait'll they startshipping her next shocker, Sex. The 125 pagesare packed with everything you've alreadyheard . . . and more of this 20th century sexgoddess. I don't see anything wrong with it.First of all it's sealed in a silver mylar wrapperso the copy you get won't be thumbed andslobbered over, and there's a warning aboutwhat might be TITillating. The guy who saidthe book, published by Warner Books, mightcause the same uproar as Ice -T's Cop Killer,is out of his tree. There's no comparison. Thebook is just plain dirty and harmless . . . andI want a copy!! (EC: So do a couple millionother weirdos!)

More Cancon TV drain ... ? There's a veryheavy rumour that yet another of Canada's TVpersonalities may be heading south. No! It'snot the one who was being fondled in a trendyuptown eatery a few weeks back. But, youknow the old saying, "It's not who you know."(EC: You should have been on the MTV awardsshow with Fart Man . . . disgusting!!!)

The movers and shakers . ? We oftenwondered where the expression "movers andshakers" came from. The Toronto Star'scountry writer, Judith Fitzgerald, did a bit ofresearch. She discovered that in The Iliad,Homer calls God "the mighty shaker of earth,"and later, in King Henry VI (Part II), the Kingrefers to God as "the mover of the heavens."She also found that sometime during the 19thcentury, the phrase came into common usageso that Edgar O'Shaughnessy could pen the

following gem:"We are the music -makers,

And we are the dreamer of dreams . . .World losers and world -forsakers,On whom the pale moon gleams:

Yet we are the movers and shakersOf the world forever, it seems."

Isn't that priceless? We won't be throwingthat expression around as often as we did.(EC: Priceless . . . are there any real moversand shakers in the music business . . . ?)

Suits discover country . . . Can youimagine the suits, the two-bit hustlers of teencrap, have suddenly been faced with the realitythat there's more to the world ofcommunication than acne and pubic hair?(EC: I haven't noticed . . . 9

The Hill's abuzzin' . . . I I was in Ottawarecently, and rumours are flying everywhere.Masse is out, Masse is in. Beatty is in, but notfor long. There'll be massive and shockingchanges at the CRTC, nothing to do withregulations, but with over zealous and under-knowledged commission members. The bigone, of course, is that THE big one, who washoping to hit the road on a musical duet tourwith a leading Canadian, scratch that,American producer, who has received oodlesofgovemment funding, will calla snap electionin the fall. • Independent recordings overcoming the recessionWhile music retail as a whole has been in thedoldrums this year, one area that has pickedup is the sale of independently releasedrecordings.

Downtown Toronto is the heart ofCanadian indie music so it's not surprisingthat both Sam's and HMV's main Yonge Streetstores are leading the way in selling it. But,according to representatives from eachcompany, indie product is now graduallycatching on across the country.

"It's crazy right now," says CameronMitchell, assistant buyer for RoblanDistributors. "The independent scene has neverbeen so hot for us."

Grant Kien, a supervisor at HMV'sSuperstore who buys indie product for hisstore and makes recommendations about whatto warehouse nationally for the chain, is alsoenthusiastic about the consistent growth insales from the independent racks. "Since takingit over last year I've seen it go from having alot of dead items that sold almost nothing formonths and months to the point now where Ican expect a pretty regular turnover oneverything.

"Even in the last few months I've seenquite an improvement in the market forindependent stuff. I think it comes more from

Sony Classical launchesThe Glenn Gould EditionIt was 10 years ago when Canada's foremostclassical pianist, Glenn Gould, passed away.He would have celebrated his 60th birthdayon Sept. 25th.

In commemoration of both his birthdayand death, Sony Classical has launched acomprehensive series of Gould's legendaryperformances. The first album will be shippedthis month and releases will continue over thenext two years.

The Glenn Gould Edition containsGould's complete CBS Masterworksdiscography, as well as previously unreleasedstudio recordings. Sony Classical has alsoacquired the complete soundtracks whichGould recorded for the CBC. Also includedwill be live recordings from concerts inToronto, Salzburg, Moscow and other majordates.

The original master tapes have beenremastered with 20 bit technology utilizingsuper -bit mapping to achieve high definition20 -bit sound quality on the CD format.

Simultaneous with this release will bethe availability of The Glenn Gould Collectionon video, featuring Gould's television andfilm productions. The entire series consists of16 programs presented on eight laser discsand 16 VHS video cassettes. The first 12 areoffered in this release.

Tied in with his birthday and death willbe the Glenn Gould Conference (Sept. 23-27)in Toronto, Gould's birthplace. This is aninternational convention of composers, performers, critics, music educators, scientists, and other specialists who will gather to paytribute to Gould. International press will alsobe attending the conference.

public awareness than anything. I think there'salways been this demand for it, but the producthas just never been available before."

The Barenaked Ladies indie cassette isthe most successful in Canadian history and ithas helped increase public awareness of theunsigned talent that's playing clubs. Forinstance, Moxy Fruvous' cassette is the currenttop indie seller at both Sam's and HMV. Morethan 12,000 copies have been sold and theband's popularity has landed it covetedopening spots for both Bryan Adams and BobDylan, in addition to spawning a Top 5 songon CFNY-FM.

Another popular Toronto band, TheLowest of the Low, even managed to changeRoblan's consignment -only purchase policyregarding indie product. The band's album,Shakespeare ... My Butt, was a consistent topseller but the band had run out of money andcouldn' tpress any more copies. When Roblanvice-president Jason Sniderman found outabout the problem, he solved it by paying for1,500 copies of the album outright.

"We sold it all and everything workedout fine," says Mitchell, adding that another1,500 have also been bought and are nowbeing shipped to other southern Ontario stores.Mitchell says that indie product is initiallystocked at the Yonge Street store and is thenwarehoused and offered to other stores acrossthe country if it sells well enough.

Yvette Barnieske, department head ofCanadian and independent music at the flagshipSam's store, carries about 100 titles on cassette, with half of those also being available oncompact disc. She says advertising on campuradio where indie product is played and sendingout a Top 10 Indies chart to people has helpedraise awareness of the music, but word ofmouth, in-store p lay and prominent racking inthe store have also been key. "Some peoplejust come and browse around and they stopand look because the area stands out."

While HMV still buys all their indieproduct on consignment, the Superstore hasmore than 400 titles, most of it Canadian. Infact, in the past year, Kien has extended theindie area three times to accommodate all thetitles. "As long as things are sellingconsistently, we're going to make space for it.

"I try and front rack whenever I can. Ifthere's a buzz on a local band, that usuallyhelps. It's virtually front racked anywaysbecause the section is right at the front of the

LSD's roster consists of Freewater, KellyBrock, and Stigmata. The label's first releasewill be the self -titled debut by Freewater, witha lead single and video called Grab It.Stigmata's debut, Up For Air, is expected tofollow shortly.

store. But every little bit helps."One of the Superstore's listening posts is

also dedicated to promoting indie music andKien says that bands themselves sometimescome up with good ideas to help market theirproduct. But the biggest attention -getters areIndie Thursdays, weekly showcases featuringin-store performances by indie acts. Theseperformances have packed the store on someevenings and one which was broadcast onRogers Cable a few months ago proved to beso popular that four more are now scheduledto be aired before the end of the year.

Although there is the occasional problemwith bands running out of product and beingunable to afford to make more, Kien says thatindie releases are often easier to keep in stockthan those from the majors.

"They're generally pretty good. Whenthey have the stuff it's pretty quick becauseobviously they get excited about it. Andbecause they're delivering it themselves, it'susually faster. Suppliers have their regularshipments and if you order something you getit the next week or whatever. But with theindependent things, you can often get sameday service."

All three people that RPM talked tobelieve that indie music sales will continue togrow, but Mitchell says it could depend on"how fast these bands are gobbled up by themajors."

Kien concurs that retailers can profitfrom indie recordings. "It's definitely stillgrowing. I can see that on a weekly basis. I'mre -ordering more product now with theindependent stuff than I've ever had to before."

And as long as bands don't get in overtheir heads and make too much product beforeestablishing a firm sales base, Kien says,"There's money in it for the band. I don't thinkthere's any reason not to have a release out foranyone who has a demo tape. You can sell it."

Musicians' Alumni nowin pre -production stageJack Tasse, founder and publisher ofMusicians' Alumni, is currently in pre-production planning for this year's directory.Regarded as the "musician' sb ible," the glossy,four-colour directory supplies listings ofCanadian artists and bands for a nominal fee, plus a free, alphabetical listing which allowsfor the name, contact number, instrument andstyle.

It's estimated that the 1993 edition willhave a circulation of 15,000 copies for bothCanada and the United States. There will alsobe a controlled circulation which will includecomplimentary copies for music brokers, agents, A&R people, managers and recordcompanies.

Also included in the proposed 176 -pagedirectory will be feature stories and exclusiveinterviews with some of Canada's mostpopularrecording artists. Tasse himself has played ina number of Toronto bands including theinfamous Viletones.

Sept. 27 has been set as the deadline forlistings. For more information call 416-777-2980/2981.

    COVER STORY -by Walt Grealis

Capitol's Deane Cameron says Cancon country uniqueWith the advent of the new young breed ofcountry artists like Randy Travis, Clint Black, and Travis Tritt, record retailers in the U.S.moved quickly to change their attitude towardcountry music. But retailers in Canada, withthe exception of the Sunrise and Record Worldchains, were still reluctant to change old habits.

It wasn't until Garth Brooks exploded atretail in the U.S. that the Johnny -come -latelyspotters of trends in Canada began to sensethat country could have some potential inCanada.

The big clincher, however, was thephenomenal, across-the-board acceptance atradio of Billy Ray Cyrus, which has parleyedinto four -times platinum for his album, SomeGave All, in just three months. The album hasremained #1 on the RPM Country 33 Albumschart for 14 weeks.

"We see tremendous growth in country,"says Capitol -EMI Canada president, DeaneCameron. Capitol Nashville alwaysmaintained a strong roster of country acts and

SOCAN has workshopand video for writersThe Society of Compo sers, Authors and MusicPublishers of Canada (SOCAN) will sponsora free songwriting panel on Sept. 30 as part ofArtsweek.

Thepanel, titled Songwriting: Somethingto Talk About, takes place from 7:30-9:30p.m. at the North York Central Libraryauditorium. Panelists David Betts (SOCANMember Relations representative and formerdrummer of Honeymoon Suite), B lair Packham(formerly of the Jitters), Ian Thomas(Boomers), and Molly Johnson (Infidels) willdiscuss both the business and the craft ofsongwriting. Topics may include aspects ofsongwriting such as co -writing, re -writingand evaluation; or aspects of business such asperforming rights and copyright, song demos, recording and publishing contracts, andmanagement. Questions will be welcome.

SOCAN has also released a new videocalled SOCAN: A Musical Odyssey. The 25 -minute video focuses on the role of theperforming right society in Canada andincludes interviews with songwriters andcomposers such as Shirley Eikhard, Lee Aaron,Valdy, Ginette Reno, Luc Plamondon, LouisApplebaum and Gary Kulesha. It also providesa detailed explanation of how the variousdepartments and branches work to licensemusic use and distribute royalties.

The video is available on loan in separateEnglish and French versions to industrygroups, workshops and seminars, and musicuser associations. Requests to SOCAN shouldbe made in writing and should indicate videoformat required, date of showing and returndate to SOCAN.

when Jimmy Bowen took over the Nashvilleoperation, he brought several of his MCA actswith him and changed the name to Liberty.

Cameron points out that when Bowenchanged the name, he revealed that he wantedmore of a crossover label and that he wanted"music on this new Liberty label other thanjust traditional Nashville country music. Thatwas a new umbrella, or theme, that we are allseeing now. The demographics for countryare widening and the definition of countrymusic is changing."

An interesting point that Cameron bringsup is the fact that "country music has alwayshad a lifestyle, a sentiment attached to it ... therealness. The question has been raised, 'Doesthe recession make people feel a littledifferent?' Is it a coincidence that country isreally really flourishing during a recession?"

Cameron also points to the new generationof country performer: "The Dwight Yoakams, the Garth Brooks' and The Randy Travis',these are young people who have grown up in,albeit a country music environment, but in arock 'n' roll generation. Garth Brooks, at 30years of age, grew up with rock ' n' roll music, and that influences how he approaches countrymusic."

Another example that Cameron gives ofa rock artist influencing country is Steve Earle."He had a tremendous impact at retail. Hereally crossed the boundaries and broadenedthe demographics. Both rock and country -formatted stations were programming SteveEarle product, and the crossover effect wasbeing felt at retail."

Cameron, like many in the business, believes that Garth Brooks changed "a lot ofpeople's views of country and, basically, country music is changing. No matter whatlifestyle you lead or whatever walk of life youcome from, that negative stigma of countrymusic seems to be dissipating. It just opens upanother avenue.

"We've all benefited from rap music, this label in particular. We're not exactly, from a units point of view, a growing industryjust now. So we need every music opportunitywe can get."

Limited edition Ray Vaughn Fenderguitar Is presented to Stephen Gardener, winner01092 Sudbury's Hot Licks contest, by 092'sBill Tottan (r) and Susan Haert, manager of TheMusic Source.

While Capitol/Liberty has acommanding presence when it comes to marketshare for American country, Cameron admitsto having "a very different view than most"when it comes to Canadian country music.

"There is a brand of American countrymusic. It's very American. I've always foundit very strange that Canadian country artistswear the same hats, the same clothes, and talkabout the same American cities.

"I've even had comments from Americancountry music executives who agree that theworld does try to imitate American countrymusic but ask me, 'How much of it do youreally need when you've got your own?'."

Cameron believes that Canadian countrymusic is going to be influenced "becausewe're living next door to a very largeneighbour. But with us, and through theStompin' Toms, the Rita MacNeils and actslike The Rankin Family, Canadian countrymusic is a little different, and successful.Spirit of the West are very traditional and veryfolk, and there are even twinges of extremelyoriginal country with Crash Test Dummies.

"If you look at sales numbers, you willgenerally find that the Canadian style countrymusic, which leans a little more toward folkand perhaps AC, quite often outsells theCanadian country artists who are just more orless very similar to American artists.

"I don't know why those in the Canadianrecording community are reluctant torecognize these factors as a character andperhaps a selling feature for our unique sound. The Canadian music associations tend to feelmuch more solid with things that look andsound more like our neighbours. I think there'sa brand of music here that cannot only beexploited but I think the sales figures speakfor themselves.

"I just hope that we in Canada don'toverlook a very unique brand of Canadiancountry/traditional or folk music that we have.I would like to see it exploited properly and begiven its deserved recognition."

Last week Capitol took over the entireplaying field of Toronto's SkyDome for aproduct presentation, and country was at theforefront. When the presentation wascompleted, Garth Brooks joined the gatheringfor a little handshaking and photo taking.

"In general, this year began a little slow,"Cameron reflects. "I think a lot of us expectedmuch more from last Christmas, because itwas just endless, powerful releases. But itdidn't happen. But business is now definitelypicking up."

Cameron and his marketing, sales andpromotion team picked the huge SkyDomeplaying field for the presentation "because wewanted to try in our own way to say that as oneout of six suppliers, we really believe we'vegot some real strong product for the fall.Certainly our fall lineup is the strongest I'veever seen from international repertoire. Wetried, as far as we were able, to assure theretailers that it was going to be a good fall. Butit was obvious that both retailers and the pressalready had that feeling. It was the mostrefreshing common expression at thepresentation."

Ron Mann's Twist is a rocking good timeThe Twist swept North America in the early1960s and now its set to do it again in Canadianfilmmaker Ron Mann's new feature lengthdocumentary, Twist.

Subtitled 'an instructional dance film,'Twist takes you from the early '50s down anddirty R&B sounds of now obscure blackmusicians to New York's Peppermint Loungewhere high society discovered how fun it wasto shake your hips. The film chronicles dancecrazes from the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbugthrough to such infamous routines as the HullyGully, the Mashed Potato and the Frug.

But, of course, the focus of the film is thebiggest dance of them all -- the Twist. Thesong was originally a B-side on a 1959 HankBallard and The Midnighters 45, where it

"They came fromCape Breton Island, Massachusetts, New YorkState, Halifax/Dartmouth, Liverpool,Fredericton and Truro," says co-ordinatorDave Bondy, "and they all had one thing incommon . . . a great time."

More than $6,000 was raised by thesociety through donations and the sale ofsouvenir T-shirts, hats, buttons, raffle ticketsand food and beverages. All proceeds will gotoward the establishment of the Hank SnowHometown Museum and Country MusicCentre.

The crowd was treated to seven hours ofsome of the best country music in theMaritimes. There were 20 performers in all, including Fiddlin' Jim Hamm, Gerry Spurrell,Grant Smith, Melinda Naugler, Joe Carver,Smiley Bates, The Boutilier Brothers, TheWallace Sarty Famly, Boots and The Boys,Benedict Brothers, and Milfie Kaiser.

Bondy also reports that besides theentertainment, the well -laid -out buffet wasanother big draw. The North Qth QueensVolunteer Fire Department held its annualsteer and pig barbecue. In two hours, 340pounds ofbeefand two whole pigs, along withbaked potatoes, salad and homemade cake, had been served to more than 600 diners.

It wasn't until a yearlater, when Chubby Checker recorded thesong and demonstrated the dance on AmericanBandstand, that the song hit #1 on the chartsand teens turned on to this "raunchy" newdance. The New York hype machine took thesong to #1 again a year later when adultsstarted battling their kids for floorspace totwist at weddings and Christmas partieseverywhere.

After that, there was just no stopping theTwist. It was used in ads to sell Vaseline, B -movies revolved around it, and battery operateddolls were even showing young girls how toTwist. What had once been conceived as alewd and vulgar activity was now part and

Itwas very close between the Top Six. Nextweek will be very interesting as songs fromU2, Blue Rodeo and Bryan Adams are allwithin reach of No. 1.

Been there before. Being atNo. 1 is nothingnew for either of the artists. Don Henley madeit to the top four times as a member of TheEagles, and also once as a solo artist withDirty Laundry. BARNEY BENTALL AND THE - RockLEGENDARY HEARTS

Ain't LifeStrange - Epic - EK 80173-HBarney Bentall's third album is his strongestyet and measures up well in comparison tosimilar albums by Bruce Springsteen andJohn Mellencamp that have been releasedin the past year. Gary Fraser's adroit lyricsam delivered effortlessly by Bentall, andThe Legendary Hearts are rock solid in theirmusical accompaniment. The first single,Llvin' in the 90s, is a tongue in cheek lookat some of the absurdities of moderneveryday life and is moving up the RPM 100Hit Tracks chart at a good pace. FamilyMan is a raw, btuesy tune about bigamy.Ballad of The Reverend Billy takes a wrylook at lust in the pulpit. Doin' Fine takesanother amusing look at relationships andBruce Cockburn trades licks with guitaristColin Nairne to close out the song. Holdin'Hands is an acoustic -tinged mid -tempoballad in which Bentall does some subtleyet effective harmonica playing. You Can'tFix (What Ain't Broken) is a moving balladfeaturing Jim Cuddy's backgroundharmonies. Too Much of You (Ain't EnoughFor Me) is a bar room blues number aboutall -consuming passion. Don't Mean Nothin'is a straight ahead rocker about being caughtin the wrong bed, while Won't Play Houseis another rocker that's bound to be a livefavourite. Much of Ain't Life Strange wasrecorded in a remote island cabin and theclear sound is a tribute to engineer PaulMcKenna and co -producers, Bentall, Fraserand Nairne. - SM

ROXETTETourismEMI - C2 99929-FThis is a unique album in that it includesboth studio and live material recordedduring Roxette's Join The Joyride 1991-92world tour. The first single, How Do YouDol, is a fine piece of retro pop which isclimbing the charts. The melodic Fingertipsfollows How Do You Dol on the album andcould follow it as a single. Keep Me Waitingis a more up -tempo number. It Must HaveBeen Love, from the Pretty Womansoundtrack, is included here in a half -live,half -studio version. Here Comes TheWeekend sounds surprisingly goodconsidering it was recorded live Ina BuenosAires, Argentina hotel suite and thepercussion consists of someone tappingon a Samsonite suitcase. But the liveversions of the group's two biggest hits,The Look and Joyride, come across a bitlame and don't generate the excitementyou'd expect considering their anthemicchoruses and the f act they were recorded Infront of a large crowd in Sydney, Australia.Per Gessle wrote all the songs on Tourismand, although he can make English wordsrhyme, they sometimes don't make a lot ofsense. Canada is Rosette's best-selling

THROWING MUSESRed HeavenSire - 9 26897-2-PThis unique Boston -based band has longbeen a favourite of critics and alternativeradio stations. The band is led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Kristin Hersch and alsoincludes drummer David Narcizo. Formermember Leslie Langston returned to playbass on the album. The first single andvideo is Firepile, a great track whichmanages to be light yet menacing -- andstill be danceable. Dirty Water and RosettaStone are also strong. Dio features guestvocals from former Husker Du guitarist,Bob Mould, who is currently working with agroup called Sugar. The album goes bypretty quickly as three of the disc's 13songs average a minute in length. - SM

THE MIGHTY LEMON DROPS - RockRicochetSire/Reprise - 9 26993-2-PThis English band has acquired a decentfan base over the years and Ricochet isn'tan album to scare those folks away. Thefirst single, Into The Sun, should provepopular on new music stations and couldalso move on to AOR playllsts. Nothing, featuring the sweet backing vocals of SusieHug of the Katydids, has an ethereal feel toit. Blues Inside cooks nicely but thenabruptly ends after 1:12. Listen closely andyou can hear elements of The Smiths, theVelvet Underground, the Jesus And MaryChain, and the Colourfield in the music.Ricochet is a competent album but it doesn'tcome close to the thrilling pop and roll oftheir brilliant 1986 debut release, HappyHead. - SM

24-7 SPYZ - RockStrength In NumbersEastWest - 7 92166-2-PThis group formed in 1986 and was anoriginal part of New York City's Black RockCoalition which spawned Living Colour.Guitars are at the forefront as you mightexpect from an album co -produced by TerryDate, who has also worked withSoundgarden, Pantera, Metal Church, andMother Love Bone. But other singularly

unique elements are also included in themix, making for an amalgam of metal, hardcore, rap, funk and reggae. The lyricscome straight from the streets and may bea bit heavy for some. Crime Story couldbecome a focus of controversy as it's abiting, angry track about police shootingyoung blacks. Purple is a powerful songabout the crack problem in underclasscommunities and Last Call asks what peopleare willing to sacrifice in the name of peace.Earth And Sky Is the only love song whileTravelling Day may be the most radio -accessible. My favourites areUnderstanding, a roots reggae song aboutracial respect, and I'm Not Going, a metallicfunk number interspersed with elements ofska. - SM

ALEX FORMOSAAlex FormosaJustin Time - JUST 48-2Formosa was born in Rome, moved toCanada when he was three, then relocatedto Australia, where he has lived until recentlymoving back to Montreal. He has dualCanadian/Australian citizenship and co -produced the album, as well as writing allthe songs except one, so this album shouldqualify as Cancon even though it wasrecorded in Australia. River Of Gold is thefirst single and features some simple buteffective organ playing by Formosa'sbrother Rick, who was an original memberof the Little River Band. Backstreet Girl is adecent mid -tempo pop song while I've GotThe Blood rocks harder than most of thealbum and sounds a bit like INXS. Jane IsIn Love Is a pleasant tune which uses a hintof reggae. You're certainly not going to findanything groundbreaking here but AOR orAC stations might find something to theirliking. - SM

IRIS DEMENTInfamous AngelPhilo - CDPH-1138 (Denon)As the young, in -a -hurry, new breed ofcountry artists outpace and pass each other,it's refreshing to come across a young,country/roots oriented artist who skirts thefast lane for a trip into pure and simplerurality. DeMent projects a seeminglyeffortless vocal magic that's wrapped withloneliness, southern romance, a little honky-tonk, gospel and bluegrass. Not even the'factory-ized Nashville musicians canupstage this voice that at times wails witha raw yet soft cushiony effect. All ninetracks are DeMent originals. This album ismore than a couple of singles deep. DeMentgets a little vocal harmony from EmmylouHarris on Mama's Opry, and that's hermother Flora Mae on lead vocals on HigherGround, which also features the InfamousAngel Choir: producer Jim Rooney, HalKetchum, Jeff Black and Iris DeMent. Alsokey are Fifty Miles Of Elbow Room and LetThe Mystery Be. No information on whatmight be the first single, but any of theabove would stop listeners dead in theirtracks . - WG

VEIL - RockThe Savage GardenUnique Entertainment - UNI-92101CDThis is a debut album from a Toronto artist. The music is reminiscent of '70sprogressive rock -- but with a dance beatbehind it. The lyrics are predominantly darkin tone and Veil might think about takinghimself a little less seriously as his soundand image sometimes come across as awee bit pretentious. But his voice is strongand the team of Steve and Mark Goodallprovide solid musical backing. The pairalso produced the album. The first single, AStory of Love, has received airplay on CBCand CFNY-FM. GIN BLOSSOMSNew Miserable ExperienceA&M - 75021 5403 2-0This is a simple, back to basics rock and rollalbum by a band from Tempe, Ariz. This isguitar rock -- sometimes jangly, sometimesharder, and sometimes with a country twang-- but always with guitars at the forefront.Hands Are Tied brings back memories of60s garage rock while Allison Road Is morepop -influenced. Lost Horizons and HeyJealousy are other highlights. For somethinga little different, C.J. Chenier delivers somenifty accordion on Cajun Song. All in all, this is a solid if not exceptional album. Breathing Fear is a stirringlook at being a repressed member ofsociety; 4 Men is a song of lust and longing;and When In Heaven is about heaven andearth and how people perceive them. WhatHappens Now? is another key track. Threeof the album's 10 songs run longer thanseven minutes so you won't find them onthe radio. But, considering the lyrical contentof much of the rest of the album, moststations will probably be of raid to play theshorter tracks too. The group will be playingin Toronto on Oct. 1 and in Vancouver onOct. 18. - SM
