SUN STREET CENTERS
National Recovery Month
(SEPTEMBER 2018) National Recovery Month is a national observance held every
September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health
services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy
and rewarding life.
Recovery Month provides a vehicle for everyone to celebrate these accomplishments.
Each September, tens of thousands of prevention, treatment, and recovery programs and
facilities around the country celebrate Recovery Month. The observance reinforces the
positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works,
treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

STEPS Student Youth Leaders conducted a
Beach Clean-Up to prevent drug and alcohol
exposure among children. Students picked up
cigarette butts, alcohol containers/
packaging, and trash.
The Salinas Police Department, one of our PARTS Coalition partners, held a DUI
Checkpoint in the City of Salinas in August. Our STEPS Student Youth Leaders had the
opportunity to support the police department in their effort to prevent and reduce
alcohol related traffic injuries and fatalities. STEPS shared information and statistics on
Drunk and Drugged Driving with the community through poster signage.
PARTS Members
Segundo Vigo, Salinas “I have been a member of the PARTS
Coalition since June 2013. I was looking for a job and a partner
agency, Community Action Partnership (CAP), suggested to go
to Sun Street Centers. Once I was invited to the PARTS Coalition, I
haven’t stopped attending. I like the Dynamic that Sun Street
Centers has in holding monthly meetings, listening to the point of
view of its members, involving other coalition members, and
participating in other community events.”
International Overdose Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of
overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death.
International Overdose Awareness Day acknowledges the grief
felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or
suffered permanent injury due to drug overdose.
STEPS Student Youth Leaders helped put together a wall with information about different
forms of overdose. Also, they created posters with statistics about overdose to inform the
community about misuse and warning signs.
