● Ask your pediatrician if he/sheknows of a psychologist

● It is better to wait and see the right person than to start down the wrong path

● Consider going to a Specialty Center for OCD

Assembling Your Team: Choosing Your Medical Doctor

It is important to have a physician on your team that can care for the physical health of your child and prescribe medications if needed.

● Every child should have a pediatrician familiar with OCD on his or her team.

● Ideally, the pediatrician should have experience in treating OCD or willing to do research on the topic.

● Ask if the pediatrician is comfortable prescribing SSRI medications like Prozac or Zoloft at dosages necessary for OCD.

● Ask if he/she has a network of psychologists and psychiatrists to which they refer patients.

● A benefit of pediatricians is that they are usually covered by insurance and are more easily accessible.

Take Away: Do your research and ask questions! Find a pediatrician with experience in treating patients with OCD and who is comfortable prescribing SSRI medications at dosages necessary for OCD.

● May be important for children with complex medication management who don’t respond to high doses of SSRIs. Will prescribe antipsychotics.

● Unfortunately, most have long wait times to get an appointment; some psychiatrists do not accept insurance payment.

● Take Away: Still do your research and ask questions! There are varying degrees of expertise regarding OCD with child psychiatrists.

● School Counselors can be a great resource to help assemble your team at school.

● School Counselors:○ Provide a safe place for your child○ Work with your child’s psychologist or therapist to help

with school accommodations○ Help educate teachers about OCD○ Generally NOT trained to provide ERP

treating OCD, call and find out what benefits you have for out of network providers.

● Find a provider that treats OCD. ● Ask provider if they will accept an

● Insurance Information Continued○ Have pediatrician or therapist send a letter as well.○ You will almost certainly get an initial rejection

from your letter. Appeal! ○ Insurance appeal boards are real people

so details about your child help.○ Insurance only covers evidence-based

treatments

coordinator. ○ Remember the geographically closest program

may not be the one on your insurance plan.

Take Care of Yourself and Siblings!

● Acknowledge your own feelings and questions.○ Common feelings: guilt,

sadness, despair○ Common questions: Did I cause

this disorder? Is it my fault? What am I doing wrong as a parent?

support groups near you or join one online-suggestions in handout)

● Consider if you have mental illness ○ Anxiety, depression, OCD

● 1st degree relatives of children with OCD have higher rates of OCD

● Get treatment for yourself ● Healthy parents are more able to

support their child in his or her battle with OCD.
