What are Noun Clauses?A noun clause is a group of words that

is often used to make a typical sentence sound more professional.

Many times, the presence of a noun clause in a sentence will help us

understand the actual meaning of the sentence context.

Why do I have to learn noun clauses?

All advanced English students need to be proficient when identifying and using noun clauses in sentences.

Each professional needs to know how to state his / her own ideas with

precision, and noun clauses will help them satisfy this need.

Types of Noun Clauses

•In the structure of sentences, noun clauses can be used as:•the subject of the sentence,• the direct object of the verb,• the indirect object of the verb,• the object of a preposition, or• the complement of the sentence.

The subject of the sentence,

everyone.

Direct and Indirect object of the sentence

Some verbs have two objects. The direct object receives the action of the verb. I’m going to buy what I’ve always wanted. The indirect object tells to whom or for whom the action is done. I’ll give whoever calls first the tickets.

The object of a preposition

Can you think of prepositions? If the preposition is followed by a noun or a pronoun, it is a

preposition. This noun or pronoun is called the object of the preposition.
