A way to coax thekids out to playDURING the summer wetry to encourage chil-dren to play outdoorsrather than beingcooped up in the house.

A simple area of grass, however, often fails tocoax children from thecomfort of their bed-rooms. But if you have aFlights of Fantasy play-house in your gardenthe challenge might begetting your child backindoors.

Based on a farm inNorfolk, Flights ofFantasy was establishedby Russell Bowlby whohas a clear passion forproviding children withthe ultimate in play andrecreation.

In addition to the orig-inal Tudor cottage – nowa best-seller – the com-pany’s portfolio of child-sized properties hasexpanded to includeplayhouses beyond a

child’s wildest dreams, such as castles, fortress-es and pirate ships.

Miniatures of the realthing, cottage playhous-es can be built on one ortwo levels offering fea-tures of a ‘proper’ housewith two storeys.

And the extravagancedoesn’t end there.

Extras for these dreambuildings include simi-larly-scaled wooden fur-niture for kitchens, bed-

rooms and living roomsas well as scramble nets, platforms, poles, slides, flags and monkey bars.

Even heating and light-ing can be provided, allowing the playhousesto be enjoyed all yearround.

Furthermore, for theultimate finishing touch,Flights of Fantasy willlandscape an individualgarden around the play-house — after all what’sa house without a gar-den?

Scent of summer: Three or four lilies will fill your patio with a wonderfulfragrance on a summer evening.

Add fragrance to your garden LILIES are not onlybeautiful, but their fra-grance can make theflowers irresistible.

A group of three or fiveis enough to fill an aver-age patio with scent on awarm summer evening.

Lilies are ideal if youhave a small gardenbecause they make themost of vertical space.

Place a pot by yourback door or near anopen window and let thestrong, natural fra-grance fill your home.

You should also find agood selection of bulbsin garden centres andother plant retailers.

The best bulbs are bigand plump.

The roots should not bedry, and they also shouldbe round and firm.

If you wish to plantlilies in a border, try toplace the bulbs so theygrow through groundcover or low-growingplants.

They like their heads inthe sun and their feet inthe shade.

Recommended time toplant is autumn, butmost bulbs are sold inthe spring.

Like most other bulbs, lilies like to be grown ingroups and are perfectfor creating blocks ofcolour.

Lilies appreciate beingwell fed and appreciategarden compost or somewell-rotted manurebeing worked into theplanting hole.

They also need gooddrainage, so planting thebulbs on a layer of gritwill help prevent rot.

If your lilies are to beplanted in containers, plant one bulb in a 20cmpot or three bulbs in a25cm to 30cm pot.

Containers shouldalways be at least 20cmdeep and filled with com-post.

Shoots will start toappear in the spring, water lilies regularly atthis point, but nevercompletely soak them.

Tall lilies with gracefulstems will need support, try not to pierce the bulbwhen driving the stakein to the ground.

Pests that lilies sufferfrom can be vicious.

The bright red lily bee-tle will destroy yourentire collection.

Picking off the beetlesand larvae by hand isthe best method of con-trol.

Help prevent slug dam-age by growing lilies inpots or by using a coco-shell mulch aroundplants in the border.

Tell-tale signs of viralinfections transmittedby aphids include dis-torted growth which isevident on stems and

leaves.The only way to treat

the problem is todestroy the plant, soprevent it by keepingthe number of aphids toa minimum.

Recommended vari-eties of lilies includeCasablanca, Muscadet,Stargazer, Chianti andAfrican Queen.

Jeanius fashionhits the streetsORIGINALLY developed as a hard-wearing material for work-wear,denim is one of the most versatileand fashionable fabrics.

A strong look for summer 2010,denim now appears in many forms —waistcoats, jackets, skirts, shirtdresses and even accessories such asbags.

Worn with a floaty floral dress ortop, denim is a great way to bring asharp edge to a sweet look — jeanius.

Another way to make a statementduring the summer months is to

experiment with ruffles.

Taking inspiration from Paris cou-

ture and the catwalks, high street

designs are all ruffley this season

with pretty embellishments adding

an ultra-feminine finish to every-

thing from dresses and tops to acces-

sories like handbags and shoes.

Adding a rosette to your work jack-

et is a great way to look like a win-

ner in the fashion stakes.

Colourful life of Morocco: The market at DjembaEl Fna square where society still functions in amedieval way.

Why not discover thedelights of MoroccoNO further than theCanary Islands by airand just south of Spain,Morocco still sounds anexotic summer holidaydestination.

Despite the fact that itis now a budget airlinedestination, Moroccostill evokes images ofRick’s Cafe inCasablanca, the FrenchFor eign Legion march-ing in the desert dunesand pungent spices soldon the streets of Tangierand Mar r akesh.

Nothing could be fur-ther from the truth.

Geographically, the

country divides into fivezones: the coast; thegreat cities of theplains; the Rif; theAtlas; and the oases ofthe Sahara desert.

The time to visit thecoast is between June toSept ember, while inlandthe most comfortableconditions are foundduring Mar ch to Juneand September toDecember.

One of the charms ofthis country is its cos-mopolitan atmosphereas it’s a land that takesits culture from bothEuropean and African

heritage.Before Morocco

reclaimed its independ-ence in 1956, the countrywas divided into Spanishand French zones.

It was the French, whoruled the main cities andgoverned more closely, who had the most last-ing effect, and French isthe language spoken byall educated Mor occans.

The French built VillesNouvelles alongside thefour Imperial Cities, cre-ated Casablanca — thecommercial capital —and chose Rabat, on theAtlantic coast, to be thenew seat of government.

A brief visit to thecoast is best enjoyed inthe north aroundTangier, as it is verypleasant and still shapedby its old port status.

Inland, where the realinterest of Morocco lies, the outstanding citiesare Fes and Marrakesh.

The greatest of thefour imperial capitals of

the country’s variousdynasties, they areunique in the Arabworld for the chancethey offer to see a citywhere the way of lifeand appearance remainslargely medieval.

For monuments, Fes isthe highlight, thoughMarr akesh, the ‘begin-ning of the south’, is formost visitors the moreenjoyable and exciting.

The east and south ofthe country are domi-

nated by the mountainranges of the Rif andAtlas, and the sub-Sahara, with its palmtrees and camels.

The Rif, in the north-east, is really for hard-ened travellers, but theHigh Atlas, especiallyaround North Africa’shighest peak, Dje belToubkal, is becomingmuch more accessible tohikers.
