ABC 2006 Building Code Review The new Edmonton Catholic Lewis Farms/Secord K-9 School will be designed and constructed in accordance with the Alberta Building Code 2006.

Building Description

Building Height: 2 storeysNumber of Streets 1 Street

Occupant LoadPermanent Core Capacity 500 studentsOpening Capacity with Modulars 750 studentsBuilt-Out Capacity with Modulars 900 studentsThe school has been designed to support an occupant load of 900 students and up to 60 staff (3.1.17.1).

The school, including modulars will be sprinklered.

Building Size and Construction Relative to OccupancyGroup A, Division 2, up to 6 Storeys, Any Area, Sprinklered (3.2.2.24.)

Modulars, although not constructed of wood, are not certified as non-combustible. Given the construction requirements noted above, a 2HR firewall will be constructed between the core school building and the modulars at each end of the main floor. The modulars will meet the following standards:

Group A, Division 2, up to 2 Storeys, Sprinklered (3.2.2.27.)

ABC 2006 Building Code Review Fire Alarm and Detection Systems (3.2.4.)A fire alarm system shall be installed in a building in which an automatic sprinkler system is installed (3.2.4.1.1.).A single or two stage fire alarm system is permitted (3.2.4.3.1.d).A single stage fire alarm system in a building of assembly occupancy with an occupant load greater than 300, shall be designed to notify the fire department that an alarm signal has been initiated (3.2.4.7.1.).Smoke detectors must be installed in each room in a contained use area and corridors serving those rooms and in each exit stair shaft (3.2.4.11.1.b and1e).

Provision for Fire Fighting (3.2.5)Portable extinguishers shall be provided and installed in conformance with the Alberta Fire Code 2006.

Lighting and Emergency Power Systems (3.2.7.)An exit, a public corridor, or a corridor providing access to exit for the public or serving patient’s sleeping rooms or classrooms shall be equipped to provide illumination to an average level not less than 50 lux at floor or tread level and at angles and intersections at changes of level where there are stairs or ramps (3.2.7.1.1.)

Emergency power to provide supervisory power for 24 hours and after that emergency power for a minimum of thirty minutes is required (3.2.7.4.1. and 3.2.7.8.).

Safety Within Floor Areas (3.3)Two points of egress shall be provided for a service space referred to in sentence 3.2.1.1.8) if the area is more than 200 m² or the travel distance measured from any point in the service space to a point of egress is more than 25m.(3.3.1.3.7).

Two egress doors are required for areas with an occupant load over 60, the travel distance to an egress door is more than 25 meters, or the area of the room is over 200m² (3.3.1.5.1). Within the Edmonton Catholic K-9 School this requirement applies to the learning commons and the gymnasium.

The minimum width of a public corridor will be 1,100mm (3.3.1.9.1).

An exhaust ventilation system designed in conformance with the appropriate requirements of Part 6 shall be provided in a building or part of a building in which dust, fumes, gases, vapour or other impurities or contaminants have the potential to create a fire or explosion hazard (3.3.1.20.). This requirement applies to the wood shop and science room in the school.

Non-fixed seating shall conform to the Alberta Fire Code 2006 (3.3.2.3.).

The maximum travel distance to at least one egress door is 45 meters (3.4.2.5.1).

Travel DistanceTravel distance to an exit shall be not more than 50m from any point in a service space (3.4.2.4.3).

Exits (3.4)Exits shall be located so that the travel distance to at least one exit shall be not more than 45 m (3.4.2.5.1).The required width of exiting for the school is (900 students+60 staff = 960 x 6.1mm/person) = 4,605.5mm (3.4.3.2.).The required exit width for the gymnasium is 528m² divided by 0.75m²/person = 704 X 6.1mm/person = 4,294mm (3.4.3.2.).The required exit width for the stairs is 371 students and staff x 8mm/person = 2,968mm (3.4.3.2.).
