Dear Middle School Families, Pike’s Middle School is a place where reading and discussing great books are a natural and welcome part of the day. Continuing this daily habit into the summer is extremely valuable for students. We ask that all children entering grades 3, 4 and 5 read at least four books of their choice this summer. Fran Mellin and Linda Spence have compiled a SummerReads list. This list is provided as a resource to help children choose books. The variety of genres and reading levels ensure that everyone will find some gems. Please be aware that books do not have to come from this list—it’s simply a resource for those wanting suggestions. Summer days are full of adventure and great books await us all. I hope you enjoy every moment. Have a wonderful summer! Marisa Librarians’ Footnotes

Welcome to this year’s edition of Pike's SummerReads, representing a wide variety of genres and formats chosen especially for our Middle School readers. We update SummerReads annually with the best new titles and a commitment to representing multicultural perspectives. In addition, award-winning titles from the American Library Association’s Youth Media Awards are noted for your reference. For more information about the awards, visit www.ala.org. Visit the library’s website (pikeschool.org>Academics>Library) for the online version of SummerReads, additional reading lists, and links to our e-collections, available through the Massachusetts Library System, where you can set up an account and borrow digital audio and print books for all ages. News flash! Award-winning author Andrea Davis Pinkney will be visiting Pike next year! A sampling of her work is listed on the back page of this list.

Recommended by Grade 5 Students!

This spring, grade 5 students explored the work of a children’s author in Language Arts. In library class, they chose a favorite title and wrote a book review. Here are some short snippets! Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez ~ review by Karla This is a tale about a girl realizing that she is brave and strong - that she can do whatever she puts her mind to. Aníta was born in the Dominican Republic and she wonders if her life will ever change. Suddenly, out of nowhere, her life changes for the better. Sophia’s War by Avi ~ review by Lakshmi It’s 1776. Sophia is a very smart girl that is offered a very dangerous job. If she succeeds, she might be able to turn the tables and help the Patriots win the war. If she gets caught…she will be hanged! March Toward the Thunder by Joseph Bruchac ~ review by Chase This is a book about a teenager in the American Civil War. Louis lives in Canada and is drafted into the army at just 15 years of age. Will he survive, or will he die like so many of his friends? Read the book to find out. Year of the Rat by Grace Lin ~ review by Ethan The author does a very nice job of helping you enter and experience a totally new life. In this book, you can really get a sense of other people’s lives. In addition, you can experience what it is like to live in a mixed race family! Heat by Mike Lupica ~ review by Rehan Michael Arroyo is an amazing pitcher from Cuba living in the United States without a birth certificate and no mother or father. Will he pitch his Little League team to the finals, or lose everything trying? Graceful by Wendy Mass ~ review by Nora J. I love the story because it had a lot of intense and exciting parts. I would recommend this book to someone who likes magic and who likes a lot of suspense and action. Count Karlstein by Philip Pullman ~ review by Jack The book is about two girls, Charlotte and Lucy, who with the help of their servant, Hildi, escape from their crazy uncle who wants to sacrifice them to a demon - Huntsman Zamiel. The suspense is too good to miss - you want to experience this! Paint the Wind by Pam Muñoz Ryan ~ review by Scarlett The author really brings the scenes to life, and keeps you up at night, thinking about it, craving for more. This book makes you cry during sad parts, and laugh during crazy parts. Dragons of Silk by Laurence Yep ~ review by Preston In this book, silk binds the lives of four girls. Each of them must sacrifice and fight for the survival of her family over a span of 176 years (1835-2011) in both China and America. Each girl must struggle with money, jobs, family, and even drugs. I like how the book is from different points of view, and from different times.
