The venue for the conference was the Big Bend College located near the Moses Lake airport. The event schedule was as follows:

As always the Rotary featured speakers made excellent and motivational presentations.

The incoming and outgoing Group Study Exchange members made their presentations and once again showed why this is an excellent Rotary project. The Rotary Youth Exchange was very well represented by the young people who have been staying in our District for the past year. In particular, Jasmin from Turkey, who is being hosted by the Peachland and West Kelowna clubs made an excellent speech and had the following comment on the Rotary Youth Exchange “ The Rotary Exchange will facilitate 2

you becoming the person you want to be”. The Home Hosting was once again a great event and the fellowship of the attending Rotarian's and spouses a feature not to be missed.

The next District 5060 Conference will be in Ellensburg, WA on June 2 to 5, 2011. We will have to have a large Summerland contingent to welcome the district Rotarian's to the 2012 conference to be held in Summerland and Penticton June 24 to 27, 2012.By Michael Zang

Director’s Report*Al Fabbi will take ownership of a project to identify Friends of Rotary and ensure that names are provided to John Bubb who will maintain the email and contact lists.

*A new application and administration procedure for gaming funds has been implemented by the Provincial Government. All information is available on the gaming commission’s website. John Bubb will circulate the notification to board members for review and action.

*The selection of a President Elect is deferred for action by the new club board.

*Tonight’s meeting (June 1st) will include installation of the new club board, induction of Elizabeth Jago and Wayne Riddle, recognition of Tim Kemp as Benefactor and recognition of Ann Kemp’s work on behalf of the club.

*Bob Van Balkom notes that the district visioning team has lost its leader and is unavailable at the present time. Visioning will be removed from the board agenda for the time being. Al Fabbi noted that the club has resources that we could employ to conduct our own workshop.

*The Million Dollar Gala achieved a profit of just under $10,000.00. Thanks were extended to Bob Van Balkom for his leadership. Andy McGregor asked the Gala organizing committee to meet and compile an evaluation report for the next board meeting.

*Garry Hollingshead suggested that the board improve its new member orientation process. Vickie Ohmenzetter suggested that new members must also have to take some responsibility for learning about Rotary.

*Thanks were extended to Al Fabbi for his work on the club program over the past year.

*Members are reminded to request a photo op from Paul Barber for any donations made to local charities or organizations.

*George Nagle met with the District of Summerland and Brian Adams regarding the Adams Bird Sanctuary project. The District will let us know what it wants Rotary to do in the future. The only recognized project at the moment is to rebuild the sign at the entrance that has deteriorated.

*The Rotary Wheel has been removed from Rotary Beach. Vickie Ohmenzetter will ask why and again request the installation of a Rotary Wheel on the new playground equipment in Memorial Park.

*A tentative request for $50,000 has been received to paint a mural on the washroom block at Rotary Beach.

*Al Fabbi is intending to visit the lake access wheelchair ramp in Kelowna to help assess the viability of a similar project for Rotary Beach.

*Vickie Ohmenzetter reported that the plans for a pergola at the Therapeutic Gardens have changed. Interior Health now have sufficient funds to build the pergola but require a donation somewhat less than the $10,000 we have budgeted for a manually operated shade to cover it. It was moved by Vickie Ohmenzetter, seconded by Bob Van Balkom that the club provide funds to purchase and install the shade to the maximum amount budgeted ($10,000). Carried.

*George Sutton reported on the Pioneer Appreciation Event noting that attendance was lower this year. George recommends that the new Board evaluate this project in the coming year to determine its value and future. Several thoughts were expressed including:

The change in location may have made it difficult for some pioneers to get to;

This year we did not invite pioneers personally as in past years. We advertised in the Review to get the message out.

*Nakuru Project update. Due to rules regarding how Rotary Districts can operate during the three year Rotary Foundation pilot project, we no longer have the opportunity to meet CRCID/CIDA requirements for matching funds.

Garry Hollingshead and John Topham are pursuing the possibility that one of the pilot districts may pick up responsibility for this project and ensure that CIDA funds already designated to the project can be fully utilized.

It is the consensus of our club members and the club board that whatever decisions are reached, those decisions should be made so as to provide the greatest benefit to the project recipients in Kenya and that Garry Hollingshead may negotiate on the club’s behalf at the Rotary International Convention to achieve the best possible outcome for continuation of the project and if appropriate prepare a memorandum of understanding between our club and other participating entities.

*George Sutton is monitoring the District and club plans for Polio Plus with a small committee comprised of John Topham and Enabelle Gorek. To raise public awareness a newspaper article is suggested. The club has permission to place

collection boxes in the Summerland Liquor Store in July and timely advertising may also help to fill those boxes for us.

*Three host families have been confirmed for our inbound youth exchange student:

Sophia and Michael Zang (First Host)

Bob and Carol Van Balkom (Second Host)

Len and Susan Filek

Janet and Mike Braid are also considering hosting.

*Astrid is leaving in early July and her goodbye will be planned for the first July barbecue. Michael Zang has started to build the club calendar for July.

*There was discussion regarding the number of summer barbecues to be planned this year. Some members have suggested at least two each month. It was noted that the barbecues need to have a program much like a regular meeting and not just be a social gathering.

*John Bubb noted that we are running low on banners and club pens. Orders will be placed for these items in the near future.

*Next meeting is Tuesday July 6 at 7 am at the Waterfront Resort.

Pioneer TeaThe tea was a true Rotary Club event with a great proportion of the Club helping to put on a lovely afternoon for the town. People setting up, others doing baking and yet others welcoming our guests and manning the food stations proved the adage yet again - "Many hands make little work!" The coordinator, Kathryn, says thank you to all who helped put such a generous event on for the people of Summerland!

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication  Rotary International News -- 27 May 2010

As of 25 May, Rotarians have raised about $127.4 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.

Polio on the decline in Nigeria, India

As of 20 April, Nigeria has reported two cases of polio in 2010, compared to 193 cases for the same period in 2009.

India has reported 19 polio cases compared to 32 cases -- and none in the past five weeks.

Recent Guest SpeakersMay 18th Corporal Bruce Hayley of the RCMP and Ken Ostrat, Summerland Director of Finance, spoke on the town’s initiative to replace the RCMP facility. They outlined how the current building goes back to 1975 and unfortunately is now too small and beyond reasonable repair with the cells being condemned in 2005. The new site is situated behind the arena and has a proposed price tag of $4.5 million. Of this amount, $3.125 million would have to be financed at a cost of about $44/year per household. Due to the successful recall of this initiative, council will now have to go to referendum to go forward with this project.

May 25 Wayne Riddle and Elizabeth Jago were invited to introduce themselves to our club members. Wayne hails from Zambia and immigrated to Canada and

Summerland about 18 months ago. He completed his education in South Africa majoring in logistics. His previous background was in mining. He and his family have purchased Grandma’s Treats with a plan to wholesale and retail meat pies. Speaking from experience, they have a great product. Wayne is being sponsored by Michael Zang.

Elizabeth has lived in Summerland with her family since 2007 and prior to this was a self-described pioneer in the Thirst Lake area. Electricity was a welcomed convenience when they moved into Summerland. She has homeschooled her 2 daughters to grade 9. One is currently at university and the other has just graduated from high school. Her

husband is an accountant.

Elizabeth is an accomplished interior designer who also completes her design work with her painting, floor laying, and woodworking skills. She is an active volunteer in the community and is eager to make her mark as a Rotarian. Elizabath is being sponsored by Sue Eden.

June 8th Linda Bevan thanked our club for coming to the aid of the Shakespeare Festival. She provided us with letters from the students describing all the positive outcomes that came their way, from developing or enhancing their love of theatre to helping some students to finally finding a place where they fit in.

Preston and Kerry Mott billeted 24 students. Maybe this is their secret for keeping young at heart.

June 15th Enabelle Gorek introduced Seamus Matheson who had just returned from the Naramata RYLA Conference. Seamus’ career ambition is to become a mechanic but don’t be surprised if you soon see him at an amateur comedy night. (How come some people can be funny without trying?)

Haiti UpdateA few weeks back Al Fabbi circulated notice of an award given to past District Governor Dick McCombe for his work in Haiti following its recent earthquake. Dick will be in Summerland at the end of June and has agreed to meet with interested members of our club on Friday Morning, June 25 at 10:00 am at Good Omens (formerly Coffee on Kelly). This will be an unprecedented opportunity to learn first hand about Rotary’s work in a disaster area. This will be adding as an event on our club website.
