CITY OF LA VERNE PARKS CONSERVE WATEROver the past few years of drought, everyone from government leaders to businesses and non-profit organizations are talking about how to conserve water and encouraging citizens to do the same. Many large scale organizations are doing their part as well, so we wanted to educate residents on what the City is doing to conserve water in our parks. The City of La Verne owns and maintains over one hundred acres of parks, which are buzzing with activity. As the drought progresses, we continue to balance the need to provide safe playing surfaces while striving to conserve water. We have taken steps to lower our water usage through smart controllers that shut off irrigation systems during rain and have retrofitted many sprinkler heads to more efficient delivery methods, thus lowering our consumption and cost while maintaining the same amount of lush, useable park space. While these steps

have proven effective, City staff has embraced this opportunity to take advantage of water saving grants to redesign park space with the goal of maximizing water efficiency while improving safety and enhancing functionality.

A current project undergoing renovation is at Lowell Brandt Park. Almost an acre of water intensive shrubs have been cleared out and will be replaced with greenery that requires less water while allowing the improved irrigation system to function more accurately. This removal will also allow for increased visibility to parents watching children play and emergency services needing quick access. Fewer shrubs will further benefit everyone by reducing the potential establishment of wildlife habitats that could be too close to children at play.

While the ground is exposed, maintenance will be conducted on environmental features of the park to aid in groundwater basin recharge and storm water pollution reduction. Once new planting is completed, green waste (mulch and wood chips) will be used to aid in erosion control and weed blockage while maintaining moisture and keeping more waste out of the landfills.

As grant funding allows, we will continue to do everything we can to keep our parks beautiful, useful and environmentally friendly. Please feel free to drive by and check out our progress so far.

YFAC WORDPARENT RESOURCE GUIDEThe City of La Verne Youth and Family Action Committee (YFAC) is a formal committee of the City, comprised of representatives from private agencies, non-profit organizations, La Verne Police Department, Bonita Unified School District, the City, and many interested citizens. With the committee’s focal point on trying to address challenges that confront our youth, before they grow into greater concerns, we are constantly made aware of new trends. On the premise that knowledge is power the committee has created the “YFAC Word” as a way to pass that information on to parents so they too can be aware of these potential issues.

YFAC has recently completed a Parent Resource Guide available free electronically online at www.ci.la-verne.ca.us and hard copies can be obtained at the Community Services Department in City Hall. The resources provided in this guide are grouped by age level, with the objective that parents will be able to quickly and easily find resources relevant to helping their children. The final section consists of family resources, which aren’t age-specific but rather applicable to all families and age levels.

For more information on the Parent Resource Guide, please contact the City of La Verne at (909) 596-8726.

The La Verne Gymnastics program’s philosophy is to develop a child’s self-esteem, by providing successful experiences in a non-competitive environment. Our “personal best” non-competitive approach helps every child experience success and produces high self-esteem and social bonds. Head coach Brenda Dalton Witt, with 39 years of coaching gymnastics experience, runs a progressive curriculum. Gymnasts enjoy our Air Trak, bars, beams, mini-trampoline, incline mats, tumblers and back handspring machines.

Coach to student ratios are: 1;5, 1;6 or 1;8 depending on the age and level of the class.
