Brian Blessed Superstar of film, TV and stage, Brian Blessed was delighted to meet that other superstar, Lucky, the Lucton Teddy, who bumped into him down in Eastbourne in what is turning out to be rather a hectic week for Lucky. The older generation know Mr Blessed for so many appearances whilst younger readers may know him from his Star Wars appearance. Interestingly, Lucky and Brian Blessed have both climbed Everest, in Lucky’s case, thanks to Mr Rai.

Mary Poppins descended on us last week, during our summer term’s Ballet Assembly. Taking music from ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Ms Penny Hemms choreographed a wonderful selection of dances that took in piggy banks in the Nursery and Pre Primary Ballet, swirling lassoes in the Primary Ballet and lamplighting in the Grade 2 Ballet. The children were wonderful and what was even more amazing was that they had only an hour in total to practise and they produced such a good performance. Well done children and Ms Penny!

This week saw the return of the sun and with that Year 5 departed on the annual end of Prep School trip to Red Ridge. This is really a tradition and it is great fun listening to the older children in the school, reminisce on their trip. In fact, as they departed, it started up conversations amongst the parents about their residential trips, how they went canoeing and so forth. We have had some photos of their adventures and suffice to say that they appear to be having a wonderful time. It is a moment of challenge and out of the comfort zone for some. It is the first extended trip away from parents, there are actual cliffs to climb and potholes to delve as well as problems to solve. A great experience and there will be more reports next week but you can already hear the

excitement and the tales to tell. With Year 5 away for the week, the rest

of the year groups ‘moved up’ a year in practice for September. The most excitement was sitting on the different benches and then lining up. Saying that, Year 4 have enjoyed being ‘king of the castle’ or ‘kings of the playground’ Yes it has been a quiet(ish) week without them but I am sure that they will make themselves known on return!

Open The Book (OTB) visited this week with the story of the Healing of the Centurion’s Servant (Matthew 8 5-13). With soldiers taking orders and marching up and down, the amazing part of the lesson is that the centurion said that if Jesus but said his servant would be healed, then it must be so. This was the first time that anyone had said that and even Jesus was amazed. As ever, we thank Lucy, Wayne and Matthew who give up their time to perform/tell the stories from the Bible.

came to visit us this week. Professor Mahindra Kumar (theatre designer/director and senior professor at Chandigarth University) along with Shveta Kumar (actress and costume designer) have come to the UK to give workshops on making theatre masks. They told the story of Hanuman, Ramayana and Lakshmi with different masks, to Years 3 and 4, and were pleasantly surprised at the children’s knowledge of the different characters and of the festival of Diwali that celebrates this story. The children then spent the day learning how to make masks for the theatre and how different cultures use masks in theatre rather than the actors’ faces as this means we are looking at the character not the actor. A different way of looking at theatre. We’ve discovered that they come over every year so we hope to book them in again.

Weaving in and out of these extras, is of course the academic curriculum. This has certainly come to focus this week as the Senior School have started their internal exams and GCSEs and A levels are also in full swing. It is very quiet as we walk to lunch with signs asking for quiet. It does make an impression and gives the Prep School something to think about not as something to stress over but merely that it is part and parcel of school life.

Batteries. We seek them here and we

seek them there. Specifically AAA, AA, and A. Mrs Muckalt has entered us into a competition to see which school can collect the most batteries. There will be prizes for the school and also individual prizes. Obviously, children should ask first. And, even though it is a competition there is a serious side – recycling. In this case recycling very toxic items that can leech into the environment. If they are safely disposed of then this shouldn’t happen. So do keep bringing them in (not lithium). The closing date is 8th June.

So, as usual, a reminder to come along to our Friday Assemblies. Believe it or not, there are only 5 more until the end of term! What happened there? Still do come along and celebrate children’s achievements, catch up on school news and even use the School Pool.

This weekend's boarding activities took School Cottage and Croft House to Chester. While Croft house gazed at the shopping heaven that is Cheshire Oaks, the School Cottage boarders headed to Europe's Largest Trampoline park including: arcades, trampolines, foam pits, drop slides and a Ninja Warrior course. It's safe to say that all of the children enjoyed themselves throughout the day with all boarders testing their skills and developing new talents. An additional activity on Sunday was a School Cottage trip to the beautiful Berrington Hall. The children made the most of the stunning location

and amazing weather with a lovely walk around the gardens and a game of cricket on the lawns before indulging in an ice cream to top off the weekend.

Brockhampton Estate Mrs Hanly and Mrs Muckalt took the Year 1 children to Brockhampton Estate on Wednesday to step back in time over 600 years! We learnt all about the wealthy ‘Barneby’ family who owned the estate for over 400 years. We also tried to imagine how seven children managed to fit into a house with only two bedrooms. We had a fabulous time dressing up as soldiers and trying to re-create the house with giant wooden pieces, matching up the carvings so that we knew we had them in the right place. After a lovely lunch break in the sun, we went off on a walking adventure around the extensive grounds and to the natural playground. The children were an absolute credit and we all had a marvellous day in the sunshine!

Yr 6 History lesson Continuing their voyage of Medieval discovery, the Year 6s got hands-on in the kitchen this week. We used exploding jam donuts, stuffed with extra custard and topped off with black food colouring, to illustrate the key difference between bubonic and pneumonic plague! Slimy, yet satisfying!

Sports Report

U15 CRICKET v CCB (Wednesday) and Wigmore (Thursday) After a lack-lustre performance and comprehensive defeat to CCB on Wednesday in our opening fixture of the season, we rallied well to beat Wigmore in a 16 overs-a-side cup match on Thursday. After the CCB game we sat down and went through what we could better and this is exactly what the boys put into action against Wigmore the following day. We elected to field first on a very green and soft wicket and our opening bowlers of Lorcan C(3 wickets) and Guy B-C(3 wickets) bowled well, keeping the batsmen under control and taking wickets regularly. Backed up well by the first change bowlers of Barrett, Harper and then Malachy C we skittled Wigmore out for 44-with the extras top scoring and Malachy taking 3 wickets in one over to finish off Wigmore. Our catching and fielding was much improved from the day before-well done boys! The acrobat Aaron Powell behind the stumps opened the batting with Jack Barrett and after four overs had virtually sealed victory, only for Aaron to give his wicket away for 20. Lorcan came in and played sensibly in support and

with Jack completely dominating the bowling, Jack hit the winning runs for a 9 wicket victory with 10.1 overs to spare. A much improved all-round performance! YR10 ROUNDERS A lovely sunny day for rounders for the Year 10s to take on Bedstone in a rounders fixture. The girls played two innings of 25 good balls. The first innings saw both teams with 3 and a half rounders so the second innings was very tense. Lucton was batting first and managed to get another 4 rounders putting us in the lead. The girls were thinking tactically and were trying to score point on the no balls. Brilliant batting skills from Hannah. Lucton started strong when they went to field stopping Bedstone scoring until the 6th ball. Unfortunately Bedstone picked up, had a very successful second half and were scoring off most hits putting them into the lead. Well done to Ellie M for receiving player of the match for some fantastic bowling.

Treasure Hunt on Sunday Please meet in the play area by the Prep School for a 10.30am start. The trail will take you across the fields around Lucton village so wellies/boots would be advisable. Well-behaved dogs (on leads) are welcome but please bear in mind that there will be some stiles to climb so access may be difficult for pushchairs/buggies.

Depending on how quick you are, the trail should take you approx. 40 mins – 1 hr and refreshments will be available to purchase at school (drinks and burgers etc). Entry will cost £3 per child and prizes will be awarded for every completed treasure trail sheet. Please keep an eye on the Friends of Lucton School facebook page on Sunday morning should the weather become very wet.

Equestrian News Edith Jones has again been selected for the Welsh Endurance Team. You may recall that Edith achieved a Silver medal at the Home Internationals 2018 held at Brodie Castle, Inverness and has again qualified to compete for Wales in the 2019 Home Internationals, which will be held in Wales this year.

Edith is also aiming to particiapate in the 2019 Pony Club Endurance Champi-onships.

Edith has also been keeping her hand in with some arena eventing this year and is on the lookout for a new competition horse for the 2019 season! Jake’s Blog

We've had another busy week at the yard this week. We had a TSR clinic to watch on Saturday, the first one to be held in this area which Paddy joined and then dressage on Sunday! Charlie is boasting

that he had a 1st and 3rd with his rider. I told him he needs to jump not just walk and trot! We've been able to go out without rugs this week which has been lovely as we can roll and get rid of winter woollies!

This weekend there is a Liz Appleby clinic for all, either flat or jump. There are just a couple of spaces left on Sunday but you need to book today with Meg in the office! The grass is growing well so maybe hay making won't be long.

Reception Duathlon Being rather miffed that they couldn’t take part in the recent Triathlon, Reception Classes put on their own Duathlon (run and bike) as part of their ‘Bring your bike

to School Day’. It was really a case of taking part although there were some who took this extremely seriously. The children had to run a whole lap of the field before cycling two circuits specially made by our groundsman, Ray. What great fun!
