Share this email: Anthropology Newsletter | February 5, 2018 Summer School in Ethnographic Methods in New York City The Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study (CIFAS) is pleased to announce the 11th CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods, in New York City. The goal of the Field School is to offer training in the foundations and practice of ethnographic methods. The faculty works closely with participants to identify the required field methods needed to address their academic or professional needs. The Field School is suitable for graduate and undergraduate students in social sciences and other fields of study that use qualitative approaches (such as education, communication, cultural studies, health, social work, human ecology, development studies, consumer behavior, among others), applied social scientists, professionals, and researchers who have an interest in learning more about ethnographic methods and their applications. July 23: Foundations of ethnographic research July 24: Theory and practice: social theories in the field July 25: Research design July 26: Data collection techniques July 27: Planning the logistics of field research July 28: Field trip: Thunderbirds’ 40th Annual Grand Mid-Summer Pow Wow, Queens Farm Museum July 29: Sunday – no class. July 30: Ethnography in specific fields of activity (applied social sciences, health, social service, environmental studies, public policy design, business, and others) July 31: Principles of organization and indexation of field data August 1: Analyzing field data; qualitative analysis software packages: basic principles August 2: Wrap up session Classes will run from 9 AM to 12 PM The total work load of the course is 30 hours. Students interested in earning credits for the course may have additional assignments in order to totalize 45 hours of activities (what is equivalent to 3 credits). Melanie L. Chang Quoted in the New York Times and the Smithsonian On January 23, PSU's very own anthropologist Dr. Melanie L. Chang was interviewed by reporters from the New York Times and the Smithsonian whom both wanted comments on a paper in Science, "Early Modern Humans Outside of Africa." Montana State Parks is home to seven National Historic Land Marks, and our AmeriCorps program is looking to place national service members at four of those, and all of these sites have shaped the American West. Individuals serving with the Montana State Park program will complete 900 hours (5 months) and will receive biweekly living allowance and a Segal Education Award of to $2907.50 upon successful completion of a term of service. The Segal Education Award can be used towards college tuition, paying off student loans, or for Members who are 55 years or older can transfer the Education Award to a child, grandchild or foster child. All Montana State Parks AmeriCorps members will receive a modest living allowance and are also eligible to place their student loans in deferment during the term of service. Members will also receive valuable trainings such as a Certified Interpretive Guide certification ; and all members are eligible to be trained in Heart-saver First Aid/CPR/AED; Volunteer Management in Montana State Parks; Traditional (Native) Games Training. Half Time Positions (April 9 to September 14, 2018) 1. Giant Springs State Park 2. Missouri Headwaters State Park & Madison Buffalo Jump State Park 3. Pictograph Cave State Park 4. Call for the 2018 Summer School on Degrowth and Environmental Justice The summer school is designated for academics as well as for activist-researchers from multiple disciplines and diverse geographical backgrounds. We welcome applications from Masters students, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers and community defenders and local activists from across the world. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2018. Please send a single pdf document with your CV and a motivation letter of maximum one page explaining (a) your personal or professional engagement in degrowth and/or environmental justice and (b) your future plans after attending the summer school to [email protected]. The selection of participants will be announced by the March 15, 2018. There will be three workshops offered this term, students only need to go to one and they are FREE. The topics of the workshop are - myths about choosing majors (and careers), an introductory activity on how their interests, values and abilities lead to PSU majors and hands on time with web resources to research and explore majors and careers. DANTA Tropical Biology and Conservation Field Courses in Costa Rica 2018 Do you have an interest in wildlife, tropical ecology and/or conservation? Are you looking to gain valuable field experience? Would you like to learn about other cultures? Would you like to learn more about yourself? Danta is pleased to announce the 2018 field courses in tropical biology. Courses are intended for undergraduates or early graduate level students who have a keen interest in tropical ecosystems and conservation, but have little or no experience of working in a tropical environment. Participants may enroll on either a credit or non-credit basis. DANTA operates on a cooperative and collaborative teaching model with multiple international instructors on each course. Co- instruction allows for more individualized instruction, and the sharing and appreciation of different ideas. Visiting scholars are often incorporated into the curriculum to broaden student experience.
