Welcome to our summer term newsletter. What a busy but enjoyable year it has been for Moat Community College! We have celebrated so many success stories for students in all year groups. Many of our favourite moments and highlights have been included in this academic year’s newsletters. Our new buildings are now close to completion. We move into the new building, at the front of the College, at the start of next term and the remainder of the refurbishments should be complete by January 2015. Therefore, all students will be able to benefit from our fantastic new facilities next academic year. As the end of the summer term approached we said our fond farewells to our Year 11 students. Thank you to all of the parents and families who have supported them during their time at Moat. Yet again, we await with optimism this year’s GCSE results and are confident that they will remain healthy and close to last year’s record high. Regardless of examination success the great majority of students at Moat have been a credit to the college again this year. I would also like to emphasise the remarkable efforts of the staff who work extremely hard to maximise the achievement of all students. Many parents buy new school clothes for their children during the summer holidays and I remind you of the importance of sending your child to Moat in the correct uniform. As you are aware, from the start of next academic year, we are introducing a new uniform. It is compulsory for all students in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 to wear the new uniform from the start of next term. Year 11 students are permitted to wear the old Moat uniform, and a lanyard identifying them as Year 11, during this transition year. Most of the compulsory items on the list are available at school wear stockists. However, the compulsory College jumper or cardigan, with embroidered logos, are only available to purchase directly from the College or via the Tesco website (www.uniformeasy.com). We will be issuing every student with one free jumper or cardigan but, to order additional uniform, please complete a form and return with your son/daughter, together with the correct payment. Alternatively, items of uniform can be purchased directly from the Tesco website. Further order forms can be obtained from the College Reception or the College website at any time. The College Reception is open at the following times: Term time – 7.30am until 7.00pm Summer holiday – 8.00am until 4.00pm Further details of the new uniform requirements, together with details of how to order, are included with this newsletter. Also, please make sure that you send your child to College punctually every day unless they are seriously ill. The link between good exam results and good attendance is absolutely clear – the students who are here the most do the best! A number of staff are moving on at the end of this term. These include Mr Mason, Mrs Hoche, Miss Ginns, Mr Mulligan, Mrs Mould and two long term supply teachers Mr Singh and Mrs Ahui. I am sure you will want to join me in wishing them success and happiness in their futures. I would like to thank these staff for the many years of loyal and exceptional service they have given to Moat. As we approach the new academic year, looking ahead, there’s plenty to be optimistic about at Moat and there’s so much for students to look forward to. Please note that the new term starts for students on Thursday 28th August 2014. Students should arrive on the first day at the following times: 8.30am - Year 7 9.30am - Year 8,9 and 10 10.30am - Year 11 The staff join me in wishing you a good holiday. Mr N. Boyd Principal

£50 towards the cost of school activities

and equipment.

Is your child entitled to £50 to help pay for activities and equipment? Yes! If they are entitled to a free school meal or have been entitled in the last 5 years. What could you use it for? Trips, Residentials, iPads, Uniform, Ingredients and DT products.

If you are already claiming free school meals or have in the last 5 years or you have a ‘looked after’ child living with you, we will give your child a payment card that has £50 credit on it. The money on the card will be valid from 28th August 2014 and will expire on 10th July 2015, any un-spent money will disappear at the end of the academic year and a new payment card will be given out to your child for the start of the next school year. If you make a claim for free school meals and it is successful your child will start to receive their £50 for that year. The £50 cannot be used as a deposit on trips over £50. You can have the free school meal as well which is worth £2.00 per day for the 190 days of the school year which is equal to £380. But you don’t have to have the meal to get the £50.

How do you get your £50?

IF YOU NEED HELP TO APPLY FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS,

PLEASE SPEAK TO A MEMBER

OF STAFF IN THE MAIN RECEPTION.

Uniform As we introduce the new school uniform you might like to use your £50 towards the cost of the uniform. iPads We are introducing iPads for students in year 9 and 10 from the start of next term. We will be asking parents for a contribution towards the cost of the iPads, and this will have to be paid if the students are going to keep their device when they leave the college. If you are eligible for Pupil Premium funding you can use the allowance £50 to offset the cost of the iPad.

In May we were really pleased to receive the Anti Bullying Award for our work in school. The assessors came in and interviewed students, staff, parents and a governor. Their report was very positive. Here are a few of the things they said. "At a leadership level, anti-bullying has been written into the college improvement plan as one of the priorities in whole school development. The students interviewed were very positive about the behaviour support systems that are in place”. "One of the most impressive aspects of Moat’s anti-bullying programme is its support for students through the mentoring system. This reflects the college’s inclusive ethos where all members of the diverse community are valued and supported. Students expressed satisfaction with the system and appreciated the support given to them by named mentors during the course of their education. They also recognised the individual care given through focussed tutor sessions where there is an opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns confidentially". “The students recognised the repetitive, targeted nature of bullying and were aware of how it might manifest itself in different ways and settings. This has been taught during tutor time, assemblies and progressively in PSHE sessions in KS3 and KS4". "The parents interviewed stated their confidence in the college’s ability to prevent bullying from occurring, by providing a safe environment and the support offered to their children".

This year is the 100 year centenary – since the start of World War 1 in 1914. We have a memorial book in Moat which honours the memory of Moat boys who died in this war. In June we had a surprise visit from the daughter of

the man who made this beautiful memorial board.

She was extremely happy and emotional to find that her father’s work was still in Moat and she gave us the following information about him. ·Name – Francis Jordan – 1893-1974 ·Worked in Dryad metal works from 1919 to 1927 ·Taught at Moat from 1912 – 1936 ·Made the memorial board to honour the students, as he knew them. The Leicester Mercury wrote an article about it. Here are some of the excerpts. “In the earlier and gloomier days of the war, when Kitchener’s call to the manhood of Britain rang through the country, the Old Boys of Moat were not found wanting, and out of the 700 who answered the historic appeal, 62 made the supreme sacrifice. To immortalise their memories in the minds of present and future scholars, a tablet bearing the names of the Old Boys who lie buried in foreign fields was unveiled”. “These brave lads at the call of duty had laid down their very lives for the sake of those who remained at home”.

Lest we forget……

Year nine Cross Curricular Day was all about making healthy choices for our bodies and brains. Each form group was supported by an adult volunteer who was able to explain how health decisions had effected their lives and productivity. Students learnt about the causes and implications of heart disease and diabetes and were encouraged to think about the effects of their lifestyles and choices on their brains and bodies. Did you know that the average teenager has the reaction times of a seventy year old man by eleven am if they haven't eaten since the evening before? Students designed their own healthy lunches, took part in food tasting and produced their own persuasive infomercials trying to convince others to make healthier choices. Students were ener-getic and creative, with many designing their own 'health organisations'. The slogans were very impressive, ranging from 'Be the best you can be' to 'clear the fog and beat the bloat!' Our visitors were very impressed by the quality of work that the students produced and the effort shown by both students and staff throughout the day. Thank you to all the staff and students who were involved. Now make sure that you apply your new knowledge to your lifestyle! Mrs Hill

Citizenship The Year 10 GCSE Citizenship class are currently working on their coursework which is about poverty. They want to raise awareness about poverty in Leicester because not many people understand the true meaning of poverty. Most people think that poverty exists only in third world countries however from conducting research we know that poverty is all around us. Often people find it hard to ask for help because they have too much pride so we want to change their minds of what poverty really is and tell people it's okay to ask for help, like for example visiting food banks. We have organised a tin challenge encouraging the students to bring non-perishable items which we will then donate to Charity Link for the food banks. Thank you for your support.

Year 10 pupils have created an audio clip that introduces their ‘Community Spirit' project. This will be played on local radio. Pupils have gathered and prepared the content for their audio clip including sound effects and soundtrack. Some recorded their audio clip using a Smart Voice Recorder App then edited the final version using specialist software - Audacity. Salters Science Festival

Three students from year 8 took part in a Chemistry competition at Leicester University involving thirteen other schools from across the city. Hafsa Omar, Tasneem Shaikh and Aamir Hafejee worked as a team to investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction and they then had to set up the conditions that would be closest to a minute. The three students worked really well and came third. They also learned about the wide range of exciting careers in science.

Science News

Science Exams

Students in years 9, 10 and 11 have again been sitting their science GCSE exams. They have worked very hard and we hope that they will do as well as last year. When the progress that students make from Key stage 2 to GCSE was compared to other schools nationally, it showed that the students achieve in the top 1% of the country.

Chicks

Eggciting times were had when some hens’ eggs were hatched in science. Six eggs hatched in a special incubator and over the next two weeks, students were able to observe their growth and learn more about development of chicks. There were further experiments looking at the strength of an egg and ways to avoid smashing eggs in a container. Students came up with some eggcelent ideas and we shell look forward to seeing how they grow bigger.

Maths and Science…….

The first activity we did when we went to De Montfort University was to create a future App, which people would like to buy. We got into groups, shared our ideas and designed a personal GP App, which would help people communicate with their GPs quicker and get lots of advice. I think this idea was really good, however we did not win. After that we were taken to the other build-ing where the other events were taking place. We got the opportunity to see a robot as well as a 3D printer and many other things. We then went to the area of the Severn Trent waters, where we had to use our functional skills over there, we took part in an activity where we had to send water to all the places, using the least amount of pipes. At the end prizes were given out for the best future App and how well it was designed. Unfortunately, we did not win anything but it was a good attempt. If the opportunity would arise again I would definitely go. I really enjoyed the day! By Humayra khalifa 8.5

TRIPS ABROAD

Trip to France On Friday 20th June, 40 year 7 students and 6 staff set off for the day trip to St Omer in France. It was a lovely, bright, sunny day full of activities and fun. We went to the Chocolatier where we watched chocolate being hand made. There was a lot of shopping in the gift shop afterwards! After that, we made our way to St Omer where we walked around the town and soaked up the atmosphere. There was a bit of competition (cheating?) to make sure that we got all the right answers to the quiz. After that, we had lunch and some free time in the park before setting off for the visit to the hyper Marche. Again, lots of shopping before the long journey home, tired but very happy. Year 7 students, you were brilliant and I look forward to you all joining me on the one week residential next year! Ms Grant

In April a group of Year 10 students visited the European Space Centre in Belgium and Paris on a trip that incorporated both French and science. Whilst at the European Space Centre students had the opportunity to view displays and multimedia shows about the development of space exploration in Europe. Later in the day, they (and staff!), had the chance to try out different types of equipment that astronauts use during their training, including a chair that simulates lack of gravity and a spinning chair! The students also visited a science museum, Cite de Sciences, which had several interesting and interactive displays. In Paris, there was an opportunity to go up one of the tallest buildings, Tour Montparnasse - a 210m office build-ing with amazing views of the city. In addition to this, we visited the Stade De France, the national football stadium of France. During the visit we had a great tour guide, who led a tour around the stadium, including the changing rooms and the actual pitch (which no one is allowed to walk on). There was also the opportunity to do some sightseeing, including the Eiffel Tower, and Notre Dame, where we listened to the new bells, which replaced the 850 year old original bells, ringing for only the second time.

On Monday 9th June, year 8 students went to Normandy, France, for a five day joint trip. Students visited Bayeux Tapestry, the war museum, a French market, beaches, the cemetery and other places. We were very lucky this year to go to Normandy in the week after all the 70th Annivesary DDay celebrations had been on the news. We visited the same places that the Royal Family and Barack Obama had visited on the Friday before! All the red, white and blue bunting was still up and a lot of World War 2 enthusiasts were there with their jeeps and other old military cars. We went to Arromanches and learned about how the Allies had made a temporary harbour there, in order to unload 150,000 soldiers and their equipment. This was all planned in secret, to take the Germans by surprise. We learnt about the awful conditions the soldiers endured and also visited one of the large graveyards in the area: the American War cemetery where 10,000 American soldiers are buried. We also learned about the last war when England was taken over by invaders--the Battle of Hastings in 1066. We went to Bayeux to look at the cathedral and also the Bayeux tapestry which tells the story of the battle. On another day we went to Falaise to see the castle where William the Conqueror was born. As well as history, we spent some time learning about the French way of life. We visited a chateau and a goat farm and spent some time shopping in a hypermarket and the small harbour town where our hotel was. The year 8 students were a pleasure to be with (once they learned how to talk quietly!!). Ms Steventon

Here are some of their comments about the week........

France was one of the key highlights of the year for me. I will never forget this week as it is filled with precious memories. The soldier's cemetery was very emotional and I respect the soldiers even more after this visit. We saw some amazing views as well. By Haniaah

We had a wonderful time in France, going to different places everyday. We went to Arromanches to see the landing beaches and the 360 cinema. We saw the castle where William the Conqueror was born and visited the Bayeux tapestry and Bayeux Cathedral. We spent an afternoon at a goat farm and also visited a war cemetery. A big THANK YOU to Ms Grant who organised it all and to the bus driver, Ken, for taking us everywhere, and to Mrs Steventon and Mr Heffford for helping us. By Qarima

I really enjoyed going to France. It was amazing. When I visited the cemetery I was a bit sad because we didn't have time to see it properly, but we learned that those who had died had sacrificed their life for us. Without them, I would not be here. By Salihah

This was a really interesting experience and not what I expected. I thought it would be a normal 5 day holiday, but at the end of the 5 days, I'd made new friends and learned more about myself. I wish I could re- live these 5 days but unfortunately, I cannot get them back. I feel so blessed to be able to come to France and pay my respects to the peo-ple who died in the past for me to have a bright future tomorrow. Thank you Moat for giving me this experience. By Haleema D

Learning about D Day was horrifying. Seeing your friends die in such a cruel way was truly heart-breaking. How would you feel if it was you? By Intisaar

Sport Leadership

This year all students in year 10 have been taking part in leadership courses during their PE lessons. They have had the opportunity to gain leadership qualifications in Basketball, Badminton and Football. The courses help students develop essential life skills such as organisation, motivation, communication and working with others. They were given the chance to put their leadership skills into practice when pupils from the local primary schools came over to take part in a coaching session delivered by the Moat students. The students were able to deliver fun and

exciting sessions and received positive feed-

back from the primary schools. They have

been a role model to the younger pupils.

As part of the School Sport Partnership, the primary schools participate in a program of activities organised by the School Sport Champion at Moat. Students from year 9, 10 and 11 are used to help run many of these activities. So far this year they have been able to take the lead in basketball, football multi-skills and inclusive sport festivals. The opportunity to take part in leadership

work has been an inspirational experience

for many of the students. It has enabled

them to develop a sense of responsibility

and to grow in confidence as well as

improving their communication skills.

Commonwealth Games

Queens Baton Relay Event

On 10th June, Leicester City Council

organised an event at Abbey Park for

Key Stage one schools to celebrate the

Queen’s Relay Baton coming through

Leicester. The baton relay acts as a

countdown to the commonwealth games

which are taking place in Glasgow this

year. Moat was asked to provide some

helpers to assist the pupils in a story

telling orienteering activity. Thirteen

Literacy Leaders were chosen to help

out with this event. This was a good

opportunity for them to practice their

literacy leadership skills with the young

pupils.

Comments from the event

‘Being part of the Queen's Baton Event was

an amazing experience, we had a fun-filled

day at Abbey Park with various activities

throughout the day , one of the activities

was that we had to search for the clues

(letters) with the children and find the word

which was 'Queen's Baton', even we were

unaware of where the letters were hiding,

so it was difficult for us to find all of the

missing letters in the time we were given.

But as the time went on we got used to

finding the letters as we had now known

where the letters were, it was a really fun

activity and most importantly the children

had enjoyed it!'

By Saphina Begum-Ali

‘I was chosen to take part in the queens baton relay event, which took place at Abbey park. The main aim of the day was for us young leaders to help out at the event with primary school children. We were involved in taking the children around different activities throughout the day and we did some story telling with them too. From my point of view I would say that the event was enjoyable and fun as it was a new experience for me working with little children. Also helping out on this event has helped me gain more confidence and I am able to work more independently. This is because on the day our main role was to take around five to six children around the park to different activities with no member of staff. However, in case we were unsure about some of the things, we were able to ask the people who were in charge of the event.’ By Amina Tambu

'On a beautiful summer day, Ms Hearity and Ms Borsada (later joined by Ms Shaw) and some of our Year 10 and Year 9 Literacy Leaders were involved in the Queen’s Baton relay event at Abbey Park on 10th June, as Team Leaders for one of the organised activities. The Literacy Leaders were a great credit to the school. As the day progressed it was amazing to see the progress they made in terms of confidence and their communication with the key stage one pupils involved. The feedback from the event was excellent and it was an honour that Moat was able to play a part in this great day, celebrating the forthcoming Commonwealth Games later this summer in Glasgow. Ms S Borsada'

It was great experience working with you younger kids, and it was important for them to learn about the commonwealth games. I think everyone in Leicester should have been there on that day when the queens baton passed by because they would at least have a little hint of what the commonwealth games were. The best part for me was when I had a chance to be interviewed by BBC 1 East Midlands Shamarke Jama

and Rutland. It is a celebration of competitive sport that involves young people aged 5-18

years, of all abilities and backgrounds. Throughout the year Moat has managed to enter

teams in most of the School Games competitions as well as the leagues. Although we did

not win many, the students that took part were gallant in their efforts to succeed. In some

of the competitions they managed to win a trophy for the team that showed good

sportsmanship and team spirit.

For the last 4 years we have been playing badminton for our school. We have gained much success and many achievements. We have taken badminton outside school and played in a club. We have played and won many matches. The biggest achievement was coming 2nd in the Leicestershire schools badminton league. We have gained so much from playing badminton and would like to inspire other young individuals to take part in a school sport like badminton. Miss Shaw

After a very successful trip to the Outward Bound Trust in ABERDOVEY last year it was decided to allow pupils from all year groups in Key Stage Three to have an opportunity to experience a five day course in the wilds. Years 7&8 went to Aberdovey, on the coast of Wales where after the standard ‘Jog & Dip’ on arrival they took part in various activities on land, in the mountains and on the sea. These ranged from canoeing, climbing, abseiling and a 30 foot jump from a jetty into the sea. They also took part in a two day expedition carrying large rucksacks with tents and equipment spending the night under the stars on the mountainside. Year 9s went to Loch Eil near Fort William in Scotland where again they were treated to the Jog and Dip in the Loch. They also took part in various adventures in the Scottish mountains including sea kayaking with seals, gorge walking (climbing up water falls) as well as abseiling. They also completed a two day expedition with 10 of our Moat students climbing 4600 feet to the top of Ben Nevis, the top of which was under snow! Staff at both centers commented on the good behaviour of our Moat students. All students returned safely if not a little weary with many memories they will hold forever. Mr Hefford
