Keep your lawn looking goodIF you have a well-estab-lished lawn, regularmaintenance is needed tokeep it healthy and look-ing good.

The most frequent tasksare, mowing and water-ing throughout the sum-mer.

Annual maintenanceshould also include fertil-ising, top-dressing, aerat-ing and controllingmoss, weeds, pests anddiseases.

Watering grass, once

established, generallyresists drought well butgrowth slows down andthe turf turns brown inprolonged dry spells.

To maintain growth andcolour, it is essential towater the lawn thorough-ly in very dry periods.

The best time to wateris in the early morning orduring the evening tominimise evaporation.

It is vital to give thelawn a good soak at leastonce a week, rather thana quick sprinkle everyday, which will onlyencourage root growthnear the surface whichwill soon be damaged indry weather.

To encourage strongdeep roots, the soilshould be moistened to adepth of 12cm.

As with all plants,grasses require food togrow and regular applica-tions of fertiliser helpsensure a vigorous healthylawn.

Lawns need feedingtwice a year, in springand again in midsummer.

There are many liquidand solid fertilisers avail-able, but it is importantnot to exceed the maker'srecommended distribu-tion.

If it has not rained twodays after you spreadsolid fertiliser, you mustwater the lawn or thefeed could damage thelawn.

The best time to startany renovation work isearly spring because thegrass will grow on wellduring the spring andsummer and should bewell established by theend of the season.

First, remove any

thatch with a rake, thencut the grass to about5cm using a rotarymower, removing the clip-pings.

After seven days, mowagain but this time witha cylinder mower set toits highest cut.

Over the next twoweeks gradually reducethe height of the cutuntil it reaches the cor-rect level.

At this stage feed thelawn with a liquid fer-tiliser and two weekslater apply a weed killer.

If there are any bare oruneven patches, they maybe reseeded after 14 days.

Worm casts provideideal sites for the germi-nation of weeds, but youdo not want to really killthem (though this is pos-sible with chemicals) asthey provide valuabledrainage. If worm castsare a problem, simplybrush the lawn to spreadthem about before mow-ing.

A MIGRAINE Action sur-vey has highlighted thatfor millions of migrainesufferers holidays canmean the misery of anattack.

The survey, conductedby Migraine Action – anational charity offeringadvice and support to theestimated one in eightpeople affected bymigraine – showed that 84per cent of people withmigraine have had anattack on holiday, and formore than 60 per cent a‘holiday migraine’ is com-monplace.

Casablanca’s medina, orancient quarter, is wortha look, and the Hassan IIMosque here is one of thelargest in the world.

If it is sun you want, try

the modern holiday city ofAgadir, known as the‘Pearl of the south’.

It’s an ancientPortuguese trading postwhich boasts 10km ofbeach, excellent watersports and great golfcourses.

For a quieter moresedate look at Morocco,head inland to the south –it is a region rich infolklore and spectacularscenery, dotted with smalloasis villages and quiettowns surrounded byorchards and olive groves.

Erfoud is the centre forexcursions to the oasis ofTafilalt, kept green andfertile by theunderground waters ofthe Ziz and Rheris.

There are the BlueSprings at Meski, thenatural amphitheatre ofCirque de Jaffar andTinerhir, once a garrisonof the French ForeignLegion, near theoutstanding scenery ofthe Draa Valley and themagnificent Toddra gorge. Spectacular scenery: Morocco is a magical destination.
