As a Godparent prepares for the actual Sacrament of Holy Baptism he must remember there are essential articles needed to perform the Sacrament: a cross to be worn around the neck of the child, a bottle of olive oil, two small white hand towels, one large white bath towel, a large linen white sheet, a bar of white soap, three candles, new white clothing (Baptismal gown). A Godparent is called upon to accent the Divine Commandment read from the Holy Gospel at the service of Baptism. “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you; and so, I am with you always and to the close of the age.” With this commandment in mind, a Godparent should take the five following points into consideration: 1. When you are approached, and asked to baptize a child, do not answer immediately. Reflect and ask yourself if you could be true to the baptismal vow. 2. A Godparent must be an Orthodox Christian, have good moral character, regular and faithful attendance at the Divine Liturgy and in the reception of the Sacraments, and with a sound knowledge of the basic teachings of the Orthodox Church. 3. A Godparent must study the Nicene Creed and be prepared to recite it during the baptismal service. 4. A Godparent should neither be excessively you (under 12), advanced in year nor in poor health. There must be a faith possibility that a Godparent will live long enough to carry out the obligations assumed. 5. The Church recommends one Godparent.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

We have all heard this portion of the Gospel reading many times, and especially during the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Through baptism we receive a full forgiveness of sin, whether original or not. We put on Christ, becoming His Body, the Church. The Godparents, along with the parents and guided by the Church, should lead the newly-baptized child through the walk of life. Just a biological parents have serious obligations for the care and nurture of their child, so do the Godparents have important duties and obligations to their Godchild ~ in particular to see to it that the child received a Christian upbringing. A Godparent is the representative of the infant who is admitted into the Church of Christ. He speaks for the infant and vows that he will do all that he can to assure that the child will become a true soldier of Christ and a devoted member of His Church. Parents should exercise the greatest care in the selection of Godparents for their children. Certainly they will never select an atheist or an agnostic, but rather people who are full of the Holy Spirit and who represent only the highest Christian morals and ethics. Godparenting as viewed by the Orthodox Christian Church goes far beyond the purchase of a new outfit and a baptismal cross. The emphasis must not be on the material, but rather on the spiritual. Godparents should make this commitment knowing that they are entering a long-term relationship with their Godchild, with the parents and with the Church. This lifelong commitment involves instilling in the child only the best of Christian moral and ethics.

A Godparent should make a faithful commitment to love his Godchild and to join in the struggle with the parents, guided by the Church, to bring the child carefully and prayerfully along the difficult road to heaven. “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you; and so, I am with you always and to the close of the age.”

With this commandment in mind, a Godparent should take the five following points into consideration:

Vacation Bible School

Saint Demetrios’ Vacation Bible School was a HUGE success! Thanks goes out to Kelly MacDonnell for a terrific program, 60 children (ages 3 to 11) participated. With 30 volunteers, it was a boisterous, fun, valuable time filled with fellowship. Cave Quest was meant to help kids “Gear up for an over-the-top underground adventure! Ground kids in the solid rock foundation of God’s love, a love that takes us through life’s dark times.” The children went spelunking through dark caves with Jesus as their light. Kids learned Jesus is the one who lights our way and gives us hope for each new day. His love illuminates when the path is dark. Cave Quest VBS encourages kids to follow Jesus wherever he will lead them! The children collected and donated $248 to Operation Kid-to-Kid and $248 to IOCC. It was full week of smiles, joy and fellowship, Vacation Bible School spread the word of God to our children in a fun way.

Saint Nicholas Shrine Appeal

Your Church family calls upon you to rebuild the only Church destroyed on 9/11 and to help launch Orthodox Christianity into American consciousness at a level previously unimaginable. The Saint Nicholas Church of Lower Manhattan is being resurrected as The Saint Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero and each Church of our Archdiocese is asked to support this critically important effort.

This tiny Greek Orthodox Church, a spiritual colossus among mountains for steel and glass, will rise in the middle of Sacred Ground. The visionary edifice will mark not only the events of 9/11, but through this House of Prayer, the Orthodox Christian Church will offer a place of solace, inspiration, and healing for all who visit Ground Zero. Inspired by Hagia Sophia, the Great Church of Christ itself, Saint Nicholas will be the most visible presence of our Faith and Community in America. As the Parthenon was rebuilt after the destruction and burning of Athens, so the Saint Nicholas Shrine will rise from the ashes of 9/11 to be a monument to those who died and to the sacrificial love of the heroic first responders.

Our National Shrine at Ground Zero stands in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Just as Lady Liberty holds her lamp at the “Golden Door”, welcoming the “huddled mass” and “tempest-tots”, so Saint Nicholas will be our own light on a hill, offered to all, the only religious presence in the sixteen-acre site of the new World Trade Center. It will be a beacon of peace guiding millions of souls to be spiritual harbor of our Lord, Jesus Christ. What an opportunity for witness! Never before has there been such a Church on public land, in such a public place. In the next few years more than fifty million people will see The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine at Ground Zero. It will truly be a place of pilgrimage for the Nation and the world.

Saint Demetrios has committed to donate $10,000 toward the rebuilding of Saint Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero. We have collected $6,095 from our Parish and Parish Council members. We are asking each family to donate $50 that will count towards the commitment of our Parish. If you are unable to donate $50, any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please join us and make your donation check payable to Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and mail or bring to our Church Office. We thank you for your consideration as we come together as the Church family for the good of our Church and of all people, to rebuild the Saint Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our vacation plans and grow lazy in our church attendance and spiritual life during the summer months. As the following story reveals, God never goes on vacation and we shouldn’t find excuses to take a vacation from church. How can we continue on our journey with Christ during the summer months? Try implementing some of the ideas below and use them for inspiration in finding additional ways to keep your family close to Christ! Where does God go for summer vacation? A little girl I know pondered that same question not too long ago. Sarah loved Sunday School; she went every Sunday. She liked being in church with her parents… but when summer came, it would all end!

Why wasn't there church? Why wasn't there any Sunday School? Where did her friends go? She really was concerned. She wondered why the choir stopped singing on Sundays. Even worse, she wondered why there wasn't church in the summer… when in actuality, her parents would just stop going to church in the summer!

The summer was their "time off". Time to lounge in the sun, time to plan family vacations and weekends away. It was time to concentrate on rest and relaxation. But for Sarah, it was strange not to go to church, see her friends, or be with God.

On the day that her family piled into the station wagon to visit their grandmother, Sarah asked her mother, "Mom, where does God go for summer vacation?"

Her mother chuckled at the question, and told her God doesn’t go on vacation. Sarah wondered, "Why don't we go to church then? Why isn't there any Sunday School? Why don't I get to see my church friends?"

Her parents weren't really prepared to deal with questions like this! What could they say? After all, God wasn't on vacation… they were! Imagine her parents' surprise when they realized their little daughter had "stumped them." They just didn’t know how to answer her question. What was really great was that they were worried enough about it to look for an answer!

Take the Summer Challenge

Until now, her parents thought: Church was only a 2-hour responsibility on Sunday mornings. For Sarah though, it was a different story. She lived what she learned. Church wasn't just an obligation for her. No way! In fact, it was a way of living… a way of being!

So, where does God rank in your family's summer

plans? Will He go with you on vacation, or will a break from school and work mean a break from God? This summer we want to invite you to take the Summer Challenge. Instead of taking a rest from your spiritual life, we want your family to use the summer to grow closer to God. Be creative! Be committed! Be with Christ! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Go to Church! Summer is a wonderful time to worship with your family.

Camp Out! No, not the kind where you pitch a tent in the middle of the wilderness (although that can be fun); we’re talking about sending your children to one of the many wonderful Orthodox summer camp programs.

Take a Hike! Summer is a great time to really appreciate the beauty of God’s design. So hike, bike, fish, and swim-- just get out there!

It doesn’t matter how you do it, just keep GOD in your summer plans!
