FLOW VISUALIZATION AND PIV

• It is used to obtain instantaneous velocity

measurements and related properties in fluids.

• Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an optical

method of flow visualization.

Flow Visualisation

Result 1: In the above figure, the vortex rings of the smoke jet used in the flow

visualization can be seen.

The vectors in the various regions of the jet which indicate the speed and

direction (the velocity field) of the flow being studied are seen.

Result 2: On comparing the curves for PIV and Tollmien’s solution in the

above figure, we see that they are almost equal. Hence, the result is

satisfactory. 7

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

• I would like to thank Prof. Tomohisa Wada for his constant

support and guidance for the past one month.

• My internship advisor, Prof. Senaha for helping me with the

experiments and for being patient throughout.

• Prof. Matsuda and Prof. Yasuda for being so helpful and for

giving me extra information about the experiments.

• Prof. Yaga for taking us to the best places in Okinawa and for

being so kind.

• My lab partners, Saaya, Yuki, Rihito, Tomoya and Masanao for

their help at every point and without whom my internship wouldn’t

have been so exciting.

• I am extremely grateful to Shiho for always being their for us.
