We asked our teachers to choose an international personality and share with us what theywould do in his or her place. These were the replies that we received.

Mrs. Palmer Dodds:IfI were Bill Gates, I would randomly select people and give them $10,000.00. Not an organisa-tion but individualsj* A random act of kindness*

Mrs. Kapner:If I were President Mobutu of Zaire, I would hand back my millions and save my lovely countryand my people.

Mr. Iseri:If I were Alberto Fujimori ( President of Peru ) , Iwould have hopefully done as he did. It musthave taken tremendous Courage to not buckle under International pressure or kidnap~pens/terrorists demands.

Mr. Sonnet:IfI were the Dalai Lama I would continue on his path to secure a free Tibet ,where once againTibetans would have the right to retain their culture intact.

Mrs. Canning:If I were Saddam Hussain, I would try to be a nicer person.

Mrs. Davison:IfI were Michael Jackson, I would try to make up my mind!

Mrs. R. Sen:If I were the wealthy Sultan of Brunei, I would use of some that money to open a well equippedhome for the care of stray dogs.

Mrs. Fotheringham:If I were Gillian Anderson, I would treat my eighth grade students to a paranormal experience.

Animals of India-Samuel Chi

India has a wide variety of animals. Most of the

wide animals live either in the Deccan to the

mountains near the Himalayas. In Deccan there

cat carnivores like tigers. patitliers. leopards, and

cheetalis. Hoofed animals like sheep, cows,

horses, wild buffaloes, antelopes, and wild hogs

live throughout India. Other animals include

Wolves. bcars, cobras, peacocks, crocodiles, and

even rhinticeroses. In the cities, cows, monkeys,

hogs. horses. dogs, and sometimes elephants

wander on the streets. Cows are considered a

sacred in Hinduism and awn’: allowed to be

eaten. That`s why India has one of the biggest

cow populations in the world. So, if you are an

animal lover and are looking for some animal

life, India is the place for you!

BUSES, COWS AND TAXISSince Delhi traffic is

something we all dislike, especially during conges-tion, I`ve decided to write afew paragraphs aboutit andcertain situations that wehave all experienced andmay want to laugh at.

To begin with, thereare more cars in Delhi thanall the other Indian citiesCombined. Just imagine!!Have you ever been stuck inthe middle of a cross roadwith hundreds of carsaround you blowing theirhorns, trying to get out?You might have to standthere for hours. Mostdrivers drive like maniacs. The cows don`t seem tomind even though the carspass them inches away andat a high speed. They justcontinue to stand therechewing on whatever theyhave in their mouths. Don`tthey have any nerves?

In addition, Delhibuses are not a pretty sight.Passengers are sitting on theroofs, hanging out of thewindows and doors. Thereare free passengers whojurnp on to the bus while itsdriving. The engines soundlike tractors going at thespeed of an airplane. Thepollution can also be seenspewing out from theexhaust pipe. Only one outof eighty-eight buses is inproper condition for driving, and only one out of threebus drivers has a driver'slicense. So, why can”t theDelhi police do anythingabout this problem. Well, they did. But once theystarted checking the driverlicenses, the bus driverswent out on strike because

by Robin Borjesson

licenses, the bus driverswent out on strike becausethey thought the police offic-ers were interfering withtheir work.

And what about thetrucks. Have you ever seena truck that transports waterand doesn°t leak‘? I d0n’tthink so.

Taxi cabs are notvery hard to find here inNew Delhi. There are thou-sands of them. But once youfind a cab, you may have tolook around for a while untilyou find the driver. He isusually laying inside a littlehut, somewhere nearby, sleeping. The first thing youthink of when you enter theuncomfortable little car is ofthe smell: stinky feet. Itmakes you feel sick. Then itmight take some time beforethe car starts. Once you”reon the road you realise thatthe cab doesn't go fasterthan 40 kilometers per hour, but that's not a problem -you can sit back and relaxand listen to the sound of theroaring engine. When youfinally reach your destina-tion, you may have to arguewith the driver about rates, but you get used to it aftersome time, and it actuallybecomes quite fun.

In conclusion, I don`tthink we should complaintoo much about these kindsof things. After all, theroads and all its inhabitantsmake India so interestingand exciting. Never a dullmoment takes on a newmeaning when you tacklethe roads of India, and lifeon Indian roads makes youappreciate any traffic in yourown country.

Happy Earth Dag

by Samuel Carlsson

The Environment andEcology was our focus for EarthDay. The Grade 7 Science stud-ents researched and presentedprojects that showed damagedone to Earth and ways in whichwe can improve things.

This project was due onthe 21 of April. The posterswere displayed on bulletinboards inside the Middle SchoolAuditorium and out side it.Every poster had a lot of infor-mation and pictures. Visitorsfrom outside: parents, teachersand students from High Schooland Elementary school,Mr.Kapner, the Director, andMiddle School students visitedthe stations and asked studentsquestions.

At lunch Eli and hisgroup members Ticiano andRohan made an outstandingspaceship launching on the HighSchool Field, but sadly the shipflew into the AmericanEmbassy. Eli said he wanted itback because the engine couldbe changed and it could be usedagain. Dr. David Hess of USAID gave an interesting talk tothe Middle School onEnvironmental Pollution. Hegave us many facts and statisticsabout different countries.

I have talked to theMiddle School teachers andstudents on their reaction to theScience Fair:

It was coolIt was excellentIt was informative, creative andthe student worked hardIt was goodIt was greatIt was OKAYIt was enjoyable.

Good Books To Read This Summer

Book Review

The Cay: Written by Theodore TaylorI have read The Cay and strongly recommend it because it’s a really an exiting and great story.

Plot Summary: The book is about an eleven year old boy named Phillip. He lives in Willemstad. The year is1942 and it's wartime. His father works at the refinery. He is working on the program to increase production of

aviation gas. His mother wants to leave Willemstad and go back to their old home in Norfolk. But his father can’t

leave. So they leave with out him, by boat. On the way they get torpedoed , the boat start sinking and every one has

to go to the life boats. Phillip gets separated from his mother. Something hits the back of his head and it gets dark.

A few hours later he wakes up on a raft. He seas a black man. He is pretty ugly.

A few days pass and, they don't talk much to each other. The black mans name is Timothy. One day when

they are floating around something happens. Phillip wakes up and it`s dark, but he feels the hot sun against his skin.

He says to Timothy “Is it dark already”. Timothy says “No, it’s day alright. Philip screams “Fm blind I can't see".

Philip had received a blow to the head.

Some time later, Timothy tracks land. Now the two plus a cat have to try to survive on the island. In this

big adventure Philip realises how blind he had been before he became blind (his mother and father didn”t like black

people so he is influenced by their beliefs). He experiences the kindness, wisdom and love of a simple and extraor-

dinary man.

My Personal Thoughts: This was one of the greater books I have read. It was really a powerful book. I

thought it was based on a true story, but it wasn't. The way it is written is really good. I certainly recommend this

book. You can borrow it from me if you want. The book is easy to read so anyone can read it. O.B.S! If you are a

person that cry easily you perhaps shouldn't read this book.

An excerpt from the book: Timothy breathed softly beside me. I had now been with him every moment ofthe day and night for two months, but I had not seen him. I remember that ugly welted face. But now, in my

memory, it did not seem ugly at all. It seemed only kind and strong. I asked, “Timothy, are you still black”? His

laughter filled the hut.

Timothy of the Cay: Written by Theodore Taylor

I have read Timothy of the Cay. This is the sequel to The Cay. You shouldn't read this one before you have read

The Cay. Don't read this summary before you have read The Cay otherwise it will ruin things for you.

Plot Summary: In this second book. the circle completes itself. You get to know how Timothy lived before he

met Phillip. Struggling through life to get ajob was not easy when you were a black person. It starts from his child-

hood until hc ineets Phillip. You also get to follow Phillips life after he has been saved. As you know he is blind.

He has to make thc biggest choice in his life. There is a possibility that one can operate on his brain and maybe give

his sight back, but there is a chance that he can die from this operation.

My Personal Thoughts: I think Timothy of the Cay was a very good and interesting book to read. It gave you

the complete story. From the beginning to the end. It filled in all of the gaps. I really advise anyone who has read

The Cay to read Timothy of the Cay.

An Excerpt From The B00k: I awakened early in the morning and lay there trying to cover everything Dr.

Pohl had said. Scared that I'd lose my life on the operating table, I also thought of those who'd survived but were

still blind. They'd tried to do something about it. Should I?

I finally asked Timothy, "What should Ido?"

"No rain, no rainbow." he replied.

I took a deep breath. "I'm going ahead with the operation," I said.

The story is a comparison of their life and the life ofEdith Chadwick, the daughter of a wealthy British teacher.

The children are from very different backgrounds and lead different lives but the onething that binds their friendship is the buried secret of their involvement in a terrible accidentwhich none of them will ever be able to forget .

Fzuuous Places To Visit In DlalaysiaBy Rizal Mansoor

I am writing about Malaysia where I was born and where I would love to return. Below, I listed the 14

states of Malaysia.

1. Perlis 8. Kota Bharu2. Kedah 9. Wilayah Persekutuan3. Pulau Pinang 10. Johor4. Perak 11. Sabah5. Selangor 12. Serawak6. Negeri Sembilan 13. Kuala Terengganu7. Pahang 14. Melaka

All of these states have interesting places to visit, but I will tell you the best places to visit within each. I think I

will start with my home state, Selangor. The capital of Selangor is Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is a famous

place 'among foreigners. This is because of the excellent hotels, tons of malls ,and because there is a lot to do and

see.

Tourists can find everything they need in one mall; except for my mother, she has to go to three malls just

to buy a T - shirt. Tourists can also find amusement parks in some of the malls. One of the famous amusement

parks, in Kuala Lumpur, is the “Sunway Lagoon”. There you can swim and have a lot of fun . There is roller

coaster, a lot of video games and a Mc Donald`s restaurant. I`ve been there before and it is great!!!

There is also a museum in Kuala Lumpur. There you can see the old weapons that were used a long time

ago and pictures of old Malaysian Warriors. There is also a Zoo in Selangor. lt”s quite fun to go there and on

Saturdays the entrance is usually free. You will have a Chance to see the Zoo keeper feeding the animals.

Alligators are especially fun to watch.

Another famous state. in Malaysia, that is situated South of Selanger, is Melaka. Melaka is one of the most

famous historical places in Malaysia. It is one of the States that was once ruled by the British. The British took

controlled when Melaka was famous for trading and shipping, in the early l500’s. It wasn`t until 1957 that the

Melakans gained independence.

Now Melaka is a very 'advanced state. A lot of tourists go there to see the rice farm that is completely

black because it was attacked by the British when trying to conquer Melaka. They also go to the famous grave-

yard where a famous warrior named “Hang Tuah" has been buried. Some people say that he is still alive and

some people say that he became the guardian of the sea.

These are some of the places that arc interesting to visit in Malaysia. There are a lot more places that are

of interest. But we have so little space to truly describe the beauty and sights of Malaysia. If you can’t get to

Malaysia for the summer, I will think of all ofyou as I spend my entire vacation there. I'm going to have a great

summer and I hope you do too!

f "'""'"""""""""""""""""""""""""""'\Things to Do in Delhi

by Arjun NijhawanaThe stimmer holidays are coming up and most of us are going to some exotic places for the holidays. but

some of us are less fortunate and we will be staying back in the heat of Delhi. You are probably thinking there is

nothing to do except go to your friends' houses and to play video games at Future Zone. Well. you`re wrong. There

is a lot more to do here than what you would think.

I will start with the amusing things or things which are fun - Well, first of all there are sport complexes andtwo of the best are Sri Fort & The Vasant Vihar Club

Sri Fort - This is "the" sports complex. It has everything that you could want. You don`t have to become a

member to use the facilities at this perfect sports complex. It is near Khelgaon and if you go somewhere near

Khelgtton and ask someone about Sri Fort - they will point you in the correct direction. Sri Fort has a tennis court,

skating rink. shooting range, golf range. badminton court, soccer field, squash court and much more. You can pay

for each day that you go and I assure you, it will be a moderate price. Their skating rink, tennis court. badminton

court and football field are very good in most people's opinion. The shooting range is one of the only ones in Delhi.

Vasant Vihar Club - Even though this sports complex is not half as good as Sri Fort, it is still recommendablewith its swimming pool, tennis courts, badminton and squash courts and table tennis facilities. lt is located on

Paschimi Marg in Vasant Vihar and can be easily found. It also has some recommendable restaurants. But, unfor-

tunately you have to become a member to use the facilities. But, if you want to take some tennis classes to polish up

your skills. you can go to the coach at the Tennis Court and ask him about the procedure and even though you arc

not a member he will enroll you in one of his classes, but you will have to pay more money to learn than any

member would.

Now let”s talk about monuments to visit in Delhi . If you want to take a tour of the city you can

call up any hotel and ask them about their city tour services. They will connect you to a reliable service. But, if you

want to see an individual monument for a long time, all alone with your family, check out the top places to see on

my list.

1. Red Fort - Red force is made of Red Sandstone and is quite well built and a marvel. It is really, really verybeautiful.

2. Qutab Minar - This is a very tall monument which has a lot of floors. but you are not allowed to visit someof the top ones because an incident occured recently which caused the death of a considerable amount of school

children when the electricity went off. Anyway, inside the area there is an iron pillar and if you can put your back to

it and make your hands touch each other, the wish you ask will be granted.

3. Rashtrapati Bhavan - Translated to English, it means the House of the President. It is very nicely decorat-ed thus, being lovely.

4. India Gate - As you all might know this is a good place to visit because of its everlasting flame. If you go atnight. let's say about eleven on a weekend - there is a park there where people have picnics and children can be

seen playing with balloons, plastic balls and everything fun .

There are a lot of other places to go to in Delhi. If you like bowling, you can either go to Qutab Hotel

where they have a totally automatic bowling place or you can go to 32nd Milestone where there are about 5 restau-

rants,‘ a shopping area and, of course, a bowling alley. There is also Future Zone which is a recently opened video

game arcade. It is located in the Priya Complex in Vasant Vihar. If you want to go see an English movie, you can

either go to Priya Cinema, which of course, is in The Priya Complex or you can go to Anupam in Saket. Anupam is

a cinema which has four screens, over a thousand seats as well as a Doiniiio”s, Future Zone and many other excit-

ing spots.

I hope this article gives you some ideas on how to beat the heat & have a fun time in Delhi this summer.

Pmces TO VISIT AROUND THE WORLD by Arjun Nijhawan

As all of you know, the summer holidays are just around the corner - no more schoolfor two and a half months. It is a lovely thought, but if you haven`t decided which place youare going to go to for your vacations, it may not be so lovely. To help you with any last minutedecisions, I’Ve compiled a list of the top places to Visit around the world.

Paris,France - This is a perfect place to go for the summer. There are so many things to do inParis. You can see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, The Arc De Triomphe, go to Euro Disney &cruise on the river Seine. Paris, as all of you know, is the best place for shopping- especially ifyou are looking for perfumes, even though some may be quite expensive. Paris, has thoseFamous French restaurants. The most popular is “Maximes”. If you are worrying about thecliniate, you are worrying for no reason at all. It is generally cool everyday, but sometimes itdoes get hot, though not as “hot” as it is here in Delhi.

Dalarna, Sweden -This is a great place to go if you just want to relax and hang out. Eventhough some people say that Stockholm is the better of the two cities, people from Sweden sayDalarna is a much much better palce to visit. In Dalarna you can do a lot of things. First of all, there is an island on the west coast and you can go sailing, wind surfing and fishing. You canalso go shopping in Dalarna, but it is quite expensive. Sweden has some of the lovliest shop-ping centers in the world, according to some people. It also has some good restaurants, lots offestivals, and you can play almost every sport you could ever want. This is a good place to goto if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city and yet you want to be physi-cally active.

Berne, Switzerland- In Switzerland you can do a lot of things. You can go summer glacierskiing, grass skiing, shopping, visit some farms, attend festivals & go clean air hiking. youall know you can go skiing in Switzerland - but did you know you can go grassskiing too!!!Switzerland is also famous for shopping :swiss 'watches, swiss chocolate & swiss quality. Oneof the most renowned stores for shopping in Switzerland is “Smbys”. Try to go to a dairy farmwhile there where you can milk cows which are healthier, neuter and less spoiled than they arehere. There are many attractions, but the real beauty of this country' lies in its scenery. I wouldstrongly recommend this place to those who want to see a beautiful spot.

Johannesburg, South Africa - In this beautiful city. you can do a number of things - go sight-seeing, ice skating, shopping, hiking & eat at posh restaurants. In .íoliaiinesbtiiwg you can go toindoor ice skating rinks and ice skate. You can go shopping in a very renowned slioppingcenter called the '“Liberiche”. You can go to some posh restaurants 'which an‘: not xfezf/ experi-sivc. This is a good place to go to if you warm to remain inland and shop. ice skate åt iiike.

The summer holidays are here and I, being from Colombia, would like to tell you about the beautiful

places, diverse culture and amazing people of Latin America.

Colombia: Colombia is a beautiful country to visit with green valleys, huge towering mountains, unique rainforests

and pristine beaches. The five main cities, and best ones to visit, are Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Baranquilla and

Cartagena. These cities are full of life. Latin America is known for it`s great music. Colombia is one of the main

eontributors to this fame. The Salsa being the most famous.

Colombia is a country ofsoceer. If you are planning to go see a match, get your tickets soon! The stadiums are jam-

paeked with enthusiastie fans from everywhere. If it is mountaineering you are interested in, the mystic Andes are

the place for you. Shopping malls are abundant in every city and almost all the stores are from Europe, Asia and the

U.S. Colombian cuisine is delicious. If you are a meat eater you”ll love Colombia's beef. If you have a “sweet

tooth", then the desserts will be right up your alley. And of course, no meal is complete without a nice cup of

steaming hot Colombian coffee.

Venezuela: Like it's neighbor Colombia, Venezuela has beautiful scenery and great natural life. If you are looking

for fancy modem resorts, you” ll find them there too. Venezuela isn”t as good at soccer as the other countries in

South America. so it has turned to baseball. But you can still see soccer games and the same enthusiasm exists as

with most other countries in Latin America. The beautiful Guyana Highlands are Venezuelas substitute for the

Andes. Though not as high, they are full of green forests and rivers. “Fiestas” (parties) are everywhere. Carnivals

and festivals are held in every town or village. The food is very similar to Colombia, and the restaurants are fancy

or quaint, everything to fit your taste.

Brazil: Brazil in the largest country in South America. Yet it is mostly covered byjungle. You can take river tours

down the mighty Amazon and see the rainforest. The three main cities are Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

The citizens love to party. Everyone likes to dance the Samba, so if you can dance very fast, this is the place for

you. Since much of Brazil is on the coastline, people eat a lot of seafood. But meat, other foods and coffee are also

very popular. Brazil has been diagnosed with soccer fever! Anyone who is anyone plays, watches or sleeps soccer.

Be careful. it`s contagious!

ll' you want a real treat in Rio. Go to the “Christ the King' statue, on Mount Corcouado. The huge statue stands with

titttstretelietl arms and wishes hope and happiness to everyone. The t iew from there is fabulous!

Now ytotrve heard aboutjust a sample of the jewcl of the world, Latin America. So hurry up and buy a

Sadly, this year we will have to say goodbye to Madame Delapraz who has been at AES for four years. We have managed to get an interview with her, and this is what she told us :

-Victoria Lain

“ I will miss all AES students and faculty, my friends outside of school, the Great Sari Show at AESstarting with Ms Bajaj at reception, singing with the Choraliers at 7:30 a.m. Thursdays, my familliarroutine and The Unexpected ( including the cows on the street ), the colours of India, careening around inmy Landcruiser to name a few.

Things that I will not miss ; standing in front of the mirror with a mop of wet naturally curly hairand havin the electricity go out, cows in the street and loud honking in traffic.

How do I manage to fight the stress of living in India ? I spend time with friends. travellingaround India, exercise, meditation, reading, films. and beauty treatment at the Oberoi ( whether anyoneelse thinks that I look “ improved ” or not l )

Our plans for the future : we had expected to that our next posting would be in Southeast Asiaand I was “already there.” A return to the Middle East consoled me for it holds many happy memories. Imet my husband, David, in Amman and then went to work in Bethlehem. He proposed in Beirut and ourfirst home was in Amman. Our daughter, Jeanne. who graduated from AES in 1996.

Saying Good-bye-Ana Perschbacher

Many of us have lived in and left places all over the globe. However, some people have a favourite place

they just can't leave. The hardest part is usually leaving friends, since you really care about them. The best way to

deal with this situation is:

First things first get your friends address, e-mail, telephone number.

Keep something that reminds you of them; a picture. a favourite song, a favourite game. stuffed animal(s).

video, earrings(girls). Be careful what you chose. somthing that reminds you to much of your friend will remind

you of how much you miss your friend and this will make you sad.

Last but not least kiss and say good-bye

Don`t forget about your friends. but don`t dwell on their friendship. “Make new friends but keep the old:

one is silver and the others gold."

At first you`ll probably cry, but you`ll find new friends. Maybe not as good as the others but friendsjust

the same.

I have a very big problem. I have a girlfriend who used to go to schoolhere, buthas now moved to Vancouver. It has been a year without her and I have moved on. I haveanother girlfriend now and my ex—gir1friend just wrote a letter to me saying that she is comingback and is hoping that things will get back to normal - just like old times. I like both of themand don't want to break up with either of them because I don't want to hurt their feelings. Whatshould I do?

by Arjun NijhawanDear Daisy,

Signed Torn Between 2 Lovers

Dear Torn,Well, you know sometimes in life you have got to make a decision which will be difficult

- who do you like more? I think now is the perfect time for you to make a decision. I would rec-ommend that you continue to go out with the one that you are comfortable with - the one whoyou think you can share your feelings with. The one whose personality is like yours. The onewho you think will help you become a better person. The one who you think likes you for whoyou are and not for your looks. Think about the individual who makes you feel good and themost happy. Good Luck.

With love,

Dear Daisy,I need your advice. It is summer time and everyone is talking about going to the

beaches and bathing in the cool, cool ocean with their new swimming suits. I am also veryexcited about it, but when I' rethink the situation I don”t want to be seen swimming in my bathingsuit because of my weight. I love swimming and so I want to swim. I hate being fat. What can Ido?

Signed Weight Conscious

Dear Weight Conscíous,I understand your problem. If you are thinking about how embarrassing it is going to be

when you are on~the beach - don`t worry. Things don”t get better by worrying about them. If youknow you are overweight and want to do something about it - I say that you participate in sometype of exercise - like bicycling, skating, running, playing basketball and soccer, etc. When Iwas a kid I had a friend who was very chubby. Everyone used to make fun Of her. She usuallygot upset over this and cried. Well, she was very determined to lose weight. She started to skate, bike and run a bit. She got tired very fast, but she was determined and she never gave up. Well, her determination paid off and now she is thinner and gained more stamina than me. If you lookat her now you wouldn°t recognize her. One thing I forgot to mention is not to stop eatingbecome anorexic, or bulimic. I am not saying that you should eat chocolates and sweets, butrather you should eat food with protein. My friend hasn”t stopped eating protein food, but exer-cises regularly. It is not good for you to stop eating now and go on a diet, because you are stillgrowing and if you don't get enough food you might not grow as strong as you should. Once youhave reached your full height and are sure you are not going to gain more height - then you candiet - but, not at your growing age.

With love,

I

The Perfect Affordable Computer

By: Nishant Mathur

In my opinion, the best computers are custom-inade computers. I like them because you can very easily

add things like memory, faster chips, a CD-ROM etc. If you get a custom made computer; it's best to get a Pentium

processor that's capable of at least 166 MHz (MegaHertZ). You should have at least 16-MB (MegaBytes) RAM

(Random AccessMemory) especially if you plan to run Windows '95. Personally, I don't like Windows 95. It's

great for people who are not familiar with coinputers. because it's extremely user friendly. I have a little experience

with computers, so for me, it's much easier to use DOS or Windows 3.11. Some people like to keep 32 MB RAM,

but I don't recommend it unless you have extremely Complicated programs running. On all good computers, you

have to have a CD (Compact Disc)-ROM (Read Only Memory), and I recommend one that has a speed of at least

4X if not more. The monitor size should be at last 14 inches. Many people have larger computer monitors, but you

don't need more than 16 inches. The high school lab has a monitor that is 22 inches, but that is only useful when

teaching a class. My recommendation is a fifteen-inch monitor. The best mouses these days are the ones made by

Microsoft. The other mousses are good, but Microsofts are outstanding. Those mouses might feel a little funny at

first, but after a while, you'll get used to them and they'll never go bad. I've had a Microsoft mouse for two and a

half years, and it's never given me any problems. Now, many people are getting on the Internet. If you'd like to be a

part of the net, you need a modern. The modem you buy should be at a speed of at least 28.8 KBPS. That means it's

able to transfer 28.8 kilobytes per second. Even if your modem is that fast, it doesn't mean you can download at that

speed. It also depends on your connection. In Delhi, your connection is usually form one to ten kilobytes per

second. That doesn't mean that you should get a modem that is ten KBPS. A faster modem will increase the speed

at which you can download, and can keep up with the connection if you ever are connected at 28.8 KBPS. A few

important programs for your computer are Word '97, Microsoft Excel, and Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold. Microsoft

Word, of course, is a word processing program, and with Word '97 you can do great drawings, create styled text,

make letters, faxes, applications, and many other documents. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program useful for

making graphs and keeping track of things like stocks in an organized manner. Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold is a

program used to surf the net. Most of these programs come in O ffice '97, but some like Netscape Navigator 3.0

Gold can only be bought seperately. Many people have laser printers, but not color laser printers. If you want a

color printer, instead of getting a laser printer, which is very expensive, you should get a Hewlett Packard DeskJet

Printer. If you don't want a color printer, get laser black and white printer. This combination chould set you back

about $3500, but it's worth the cost ecause it will continue to take you into the future.

Hidden Messages in Rock and RullBy Sho Spaeth

Ever since the dawn of Rock and Roll, even before it was a newly kindled fire in anaspiring musician’s heart, there have been myths. Some tall-tales and some actual facts, waitingto be proven. But throughout it all, there has been the legend of hidden messages in Rock andRoll. Here, I will tell you of three stories.

You probably have all heard of the most famous one, Paul is dead. It all started with“Abby Road” an album released at the peak of the Beatle”s career. What first started the actualrumour is that on the cover of “Abby Road”, everyone else in the band, except Paul McCartney(the victim of this hideous rumour) were in mourning outfits and Paul had a white suit and wasnot wearing shoes. To top it off, his feet were not touching the ground. People thought that thismeant Paul had gone to heaven, because he did not touch the ground and he was dressed inwhite. Then, on the next released album, “Sgt. Pepper’s”, the cover has lots of flowers on it,resembling a funeral. Also, if the last song on the record is played backwards, you are supposedto be able to hear “Paul is dead” over and over. Also, in the lyrics on the last song of the“Magical Mystery Tour” album, say, “I buried Paul”. The rumour also stated that Paul’s twinbrother, with a facelift, took his place in the band.

There also was another myth, concerning one of the supposed, great bands in Rock andRoll history, Led Zeppelin. On their song, Stairway To Heaven, people said that there was amessage to Satan in it, if you played it backwards. This is also one of the most famous ones.

The lesser known of the three, the message on Soundgarden”s first album, Louder ThanLove. This story is not a myth; the message is actually there, if you play the record backwards.Chris Cornell, the singer of the band, did it as a joke. Everyone was in a hype because of thesupposed hidden messages in Stairway To Heaven and on Sgt. Peppei-”s and Soundgarden as aband thought of it as a total joke. Chris Cornell recorded the message, “I love Santa, I loveSanta, please Santa bring me a present”

As you can see, this has been a hype over the years and (if you did not buy into it) a bigjoke. Maybe you should check all your favourite bands” CD” s for hidden messages, you neverknow what you might find.

a, What Makes A Good Party?

I 'i

n By Sho Spaeth

Even though a lot of people have parties, prior to the event, no one really knows whether it willbe successful or not. They just hope. Let's face it, having a good party is an art, and if you are not amaster host/hostess, then, a dud can be almost inevitable. There always is a little bit of luck involved,

but knowing what to do, and what not to do can increase the probability of ajolly good time.I've asked a lot of people what goes into creating a riot of a time and then I compiled it into a

few Suggestions. First and most important, the music. The music can not be restricted, in terms of style. You can not have one type of music dominate your collection. Insert some variety, otherwise, the peoplewill get bored. Also, have a lot of different albums. You can’t just sit there and listen to three songs forhours on end. Get some quantity to go along with the quality.

Now, for the next most important thing, refreshments. Get food and drinks which correspond tothe taste of the people at the party. But, remember, NO ALCOHOL. Not only will it threaten the peace-ful equilibrium of the party, but it is also illegal for anyone under 18.Everyone at the social-gathering will have a certain standard of food, meaning, that they will not eatanything that is below their standards. So, don`t scrape some dead animal off the street and feed it toyour guests. That is rude and unhygienic. Feed them something reasonably decent. For example. pizza.Always a good party food because pizza is always good.

And, last of all, invite good, nice or very fun people. And everyone`s definition of good nice.and fun varies. So select people that fit your definition. Well, that about Wraps it up. So, if you plan tohave a party, keep this piece handy. You”ll definitely need it.

Clash Of The Tlflll!! AES vs. Woodstock

Boys' BasketballBy Sho Spaeth

The Woodstock team arrived on Friday, the 9th ofMay to start the two-day long tournament with AES’s

basketball teams. At 3:45, AES hosts met their Woodstock guests in the M.S Auditorium and took them home to

prepare for the upcoming battle.

At 6: 15 the teams regrouped to warm-up for fifteen minutes. Then came the girls’ basketball game. All

through the girls” game, both boys” teams were getting ready, mentally, for the upcoming fight. Five minutes into

the second half of the on-going game, the AES boys” team was called into Mr. Brubaker’s office and they discussed

strategies and plays. The starting line-up was revealed then, Sho “Superman” Spaeth, Ikram “The Incredible”

Damit, Branko "Brawny" Zugic, Alex “Astro” Abrahams, and Hae-Sung “Hard-on-the-other-team” Jung. The

buzzer which marked the end of the girls” game went off and the boys” teams went on to the court.

The whole team went for two slow, reassuring laps, to show the home crowd they were in charge, Branko

Zugic and Sho Spaeth, the two co-captains, led the pack of Ikram Damit, Alex Abrahams, Ulmateen “High-

Flying””Adnan, Hae-Sung Jung, Sang-Jhin “Lightning” Lee, Rishi “Castle” Chandiok, Nick “Never Missing”

Atwood, and Ian “lndestructable” Dermott. Soon the game was under way. Immediately after Astro`s amazing tip-

off, Ikram Damit came down with the ball and immediately was back up for the easy lay-up. The rest of the game

went in AES”s favour and needless to say many amazing plays were performed (on defense) by Nick Atwood (an

amazing pass-block) Branko Zugic, Rishi Chandiok, (and on offense) Alex Abrahams, Ian Dermott, Ulmateen

Adnan (an amazing jump-shot) and Hae-Sung Jung. Not to mention the great offensive and defensive plays of Sang-

Jhin Lee. He ran across court for lightning quick steals and had the ending shot of the first game, an amazing three-

pointer, winning the game 24-14.

The next day, the teams woke up bright and early to go to Sarojini Market. After this they relaxed in the

pool at the school. At 3:00 pm sharp, warm—ups began. Soon the games began. The second boys” game started

totally different from the first. Woodstock scored the first pointlfll! But, not to worry, our boys came back with a

vengeance. The end score was 40-24, in our favour.

That is the end of this year”s tournament schedule, but look out for our fighting Falcons next year,

Basketball Team. They had a basketball game against theWoodstock Girls Basketball Team.I don”t usually likewatching basketball games, but I came, not just because Ihad to write this article, but because I felt that I shouldbe cheering for our team. Although I came halfway throughthe first half, the second I set my foot on the gym floor,I feltexcitement in the air. lt was great to see the girls whousually hang out by the lockers, the girls in my classes, andthe girls who, during my first week here in AES,willinglyhelped me find my classrooms and taught me how to usethe school facilities,on the basketball team. They were realathletes as well as real people.
