Summer Camp
Press Week 1 July 2013
With the support and hard work from the YK Pao School community and school staff, the highly‐
anticipated Pao School Summer Camps 2013 has finally begun.
Pleasant and joyous atmosphere filled the campus and hallways as children were seen with a smile on their faces
whether they are engaging in fun activities, reading a book in the library, or playing with new friends out in the soccer
pitch. They are fully enjoying their summer camp experience here at Pao School.
This year’s summer camps include Putonghua Summer Camp, Activities Camp, Intensive English Camp, and Overseas Camp. Our primary objective is to achieve a good balance between academic, arts, and sports, and allow the children to express their boundless imagination and potential.
Every class from each camp has its own name. Putonghua Camp is separated into Love, Integrity, Balance, Responsibility, and Respect, Intensive English Camp pays tribute to the YK Pao core values and our Activities Camp named its classes based on the 9 major planets in the Milky Way galaxy. All the children assigned to the different “stars” thoroughly decorated their planets making them colorful and astonishing.
During lunch, children recharge their batteries by munching on nutritious and delicious lunches consisted of balanced
meal, nourishments, and fresh fruits. In addition, snack times are available in the morning and afternoon to keep them
replenished, so they can maintain their attention span and overall good health after sports activities. Drinking fountains
are seen throughout the campus to help children replenish fluids and stay healthy in the hot summer.
We wish every child enjoys a wonderful and meaningful summer camp experience at Pao School.
Putonghua Summer Camp
Love
In our language classes, students tried their best to speak Putonghua, and learned actively by participating in a variety of
interactive games. In our drama activities, children devoted their time and effort to acting and performing based on the
expressions and requirements given by their teachers. This past Wednesday, we visited the China Art Museum located in
the China Pavilion, which was built during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The kids found all the different artworks
interesting and astonishing.
Integrity
Children learned how to give a self‐introduction using Putonghua. In addition, they practiced Chinese calligraphy using
Chinese paint brush, and learned to play Hulusi, a traditional Chinese Folk instrument. The students visited China Art
Museum, and were fascinated by the architecture.
Balance
Students made new friends by participating in our Summer Camp. Under the guidance of their teacher, they recited the
poems from the Tang Dynasty with passion, and even added their own dance moves to compliment the poems. Some of
the students have limited Putonghua capabilities, but they still listened carefully and tried their best to communicate
with the teacher using limited Chinese vocabularies and body language. During the field trip to China Art Museum,
students were well‐disciplined and well‐behaved, and showed vast interest in The City of Cathay (Qing Ming Shang He Tu)
that was on display.
Responsibility
Students learned to give self‐introductions in Putonghua on the first day of class, and were eager to make many new
friends from all over the world. During in‐class Lego activities, students used Lego pieces to build gyro (Tuo Luo), a
traditional Chinese toy, under the teachers’ guidance.
Respect
The Plum Blossom is one of the symbols that represented the four traditional noble characters in Chinese culture.
Students learned poems that were related to the Plum Blossom, and each student drew one using black spray paint.
Activities Camp
The Programme is categorized into three primary areas: Arts, Sports, and Language.
English:
This week has been a great beginning. We are getting to know the students, making them comfortable in class and
assessing their English level. So far all students have had their reading level assessed and have been given accounts for
raz‐kids.com. This is a great resource for improving your child's reading level and pronunciation of English words
especially with daily practice. You can access their account now and you will be able to access it until September. We are
teaching phonics to all children and they are all making significant progress. Our English team is happy to be teaching
and getting to know your children.
Art Activities:
The foundation of our Summer Camp’s Art programme is based on Fairytales, which teachers use magical and fantasy‐
driven stories to inspire and stimulate children’s imagination and creativity.
The first lesson revolved around Robinson Crusoe, and children had the chance to draw the mystical and enchanting
Banyan tree on the isolated island. By drawing the Banyan Tree, children learned its unique growth pattern and cultural
symbols. The second lesson was based on the story of the Little Match Girl, and the kids designed the little girl’s apron.
By creating the apron, children told the girl’s story and used it as a symbol to demonstrate what the girl had hoped to
see after lighting the matches. After this class, they learned that art is more than just drawing regular symbols and
shapes on paper.

The third lesson once again used Robinson Crusoe as a backdrop for the class project, “life in the sea”, which allows
student to draw the colorful and lively species in the sea based on Robinson’s perspective.
The fourth lesson used Alice in Wonderland as the primary teaching material by studying and drawing a picture within a
picture to demonstrate the bizarre adventure of Alice, and how she was transformed into a giant and later shrunk to 3
inches tall little girl after accidentally drinking a magic potion.
The fifth lesson used Robison Crusoe as the concluding lesson, and kids were taught to create an engraved photo of a
sailboat to show how Robinson returned home from the isolated island.
Kids actively interacted with their teachers during drawing lessons, and expressed their creativity by creating many good
artistic pieces. The class atmosphere and friendship between teacher and student also increased in a positive way. We
look forward to creating many more wonderful artworks with the students together.
Sports:
Soccer: Soccer is held at the school outdoor field. There are 2 professional coaches. In each session the 2 coaches do
soccer training with one group of 12‐15 kids. This session consist of scrimmage games and technical training that will

Intensive English Camp
This program offers language learning curriculum and incorporates sports and other activities. One of the camp’s
highlights is the “Life Coaching Programme” taught by Mr. Danny Huang, a graduate of West Point, and the programme
helps our students learn how to maintain a good balance in different aspects of their lives.
The theme for summer 2013 is "Celebrating Champions." We can all learn from their passion, habits and experiences of
world Champions such as Michael Phelps (who won 18 Olympic Gold Medals), Muhammad Ali (the greatest boxer of all‐
time), and Jackie Robinson (the first African‐American baseball player in Major League Baseball). The purpose of Life
Coaching is to provide a positive role model, mentor, and life coach for our youth.
