Fun With Art Summer Camp Leaders: Mr Giles Murfin Teacher-in-Charge Art Toowoomba Grammar School Giles Murfin is Teacher-in-Charge of Art and is in his ninth year at Toowoomba Grammar School. He has taught in a variety of schools in Britain and Queensland and before that graduated with a BA (hons) 3D Design (Ceramics) from the University of Wales in 1994. Giles has a number of visual arts skills he can demonstrate including ceramics & pottery, drawing, painting, digital media and photography. A number of visual arts skills will be demonstrated including ceramics and pottery, drawing and painting. In this program activities will include a drawing workshop, watercolour landscape painting, abstract painting with acrylic, stencils, clay-tile printing and pottery. Workshops will take place in dedicated spaces including the art studio, clay studio and the School’s art gallery. The workshop will result in enjoyable skilled-based experiences for children and parents are welcome to visit the Art building to view their children’s work at the end of the camp. Clay work will be dried and fired (approximately 1-2 weeks) and parents will be able to return to collect pieces at an arranged time.

Fun With ArtSummer Camp Leaders:

Fun With DramaSummer Camp Leaders:

Mrs Eylece BlaikieHead of Department, Arts Toowoomba Grammar School

From 2001-2007 Eylece Blaikie was the Principal Drama Teacher at ‘The Drama Studio’, a highly successful performance studio which developed communication skills of younger students and prepared older students for audition and performance work. Additionally Eylece has held the positions of festival convener, eisteddfod adjudicator, actor, arts educator, project officer, film maker, director and choreographer. Currently Mrs Blaikie is the Head of Arts at Toowoomba Grammar School and facilitator of The Toowoomba Grammar Acting Academy (TiGAA).

Throughout the day-long drama program, participants will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of differing styles of drama and digital media which include physical theatre, comedy, acting for stage and screen, in addition to film production and editing. Commencing in a fun-filled improvised style, students will be engaged in creating student devised performances as well as presenting polished work using a convergence of differing theatre texts and styles blended with virtuosic or everyday performance skills the students bring into the acting space.

No previous experience is necessary to participate in the drama program.

Science InvestigationsSummer Camp Leader:

Mrs Jennifer McPhieTeacher of Secondary Science Toowoomba Grammar School

Jennifer McPhie has been a contract teacher of Secondary Science at Toowoomba Grammar School in 2019. She has also previously taught Science at The Glennie School and has been an Education Officer STEM with the Toowoomba Catholic Schools’ Diocese.

The Science program will combine Science theory with advanced hands-on, practical activities providing learners with the opportunity to apply scientific knowledge to gain tangible outcomes using scientific methods. Science methods taught will include use of technology, applied engineering principles and basic mathematical computations. The program brings together the foundational Science continuum curriculum concepts of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with real world applications and problem solving approaches in a fun, and collaborative manner. The program aims to provide participants with opportunities to develop and maximise their critical and creative thinking skills, the ability to work in a team and to gain an ethical understanding of the place of Science in today’s world. Activities will take place in the School’s dedicated Science laboratories and appropriate outdoor spaces.

Fun with Design and TechnologySummer Camp Leader:

Mr Andrew KirbyHead of Department, Industrial Technology & Design Toowoomba Grammar School

Andrew Kirby has twelve years of experience in Education and twenty years as a tradesman employed in Australian manufacturing industries. Currently he is the Head of Department, Industrial Technology & Design. Through his industry experience, he developed a solid foundation in problem-solving techniques that have proved beneficial in his teaching career.

In 2005 Andrew completed a Bachelor of Technology Education at Griffith University. This degree focused on Design Thinking and the benefits of using this framework for problem-solving.

The Design and Technology program will include scanning a shape modelled out of plasticine and use of 3D printers and a session which will incorporate orthographic sketching, pictorial sketching and presentation sketching techniques using the Autodesk Sketchbook app for rendering.

Mr Clinton OwenDigital Technologies Co-ordinator Toowoomba Grammar School

Clinton Owen is the Subject Co-ordinator of Digital Technologies and is in his 4th year at Toowoomba Grammar School. He graduated with a B.Ed (Information Processing Technology & Health and Physical Education) from the University of Southern Queensland. He has a passion for coding with a particular interest in artificial intelligence.

This workshop will inspire children to be creative coders. They will be coding a pocket-sized computer to create a video game, a pedometer and a flick football scoreboard. Children will discover the endless possibilities of coding and develop foundational programming skills.

Mr Clinton OwenDigital Technologies Co-ordinator Toowoomba Grammar School

Clinton Owen is the Subject Co-ordinator of Digital Technologies and is in his 4th year at Toowoomba Grammar School. He graduated with a B.Ed (Information Processing Technology & Health and Physical Education) from the University of Southern Queensland. Each child will have access to their own individual robot with human-like sensors that react to the surrounding environment. At the end of the activity, children will team up to build and remote control a robot to compete in a battle royal.

Indoor SportSummer Camp Leader:

Brendan DohertyJunior School Sportsmaster Toowoomba Grammar School

Brendan Doherty graduated with a Bachelor In Human Movement Studies from the University of Queensland. He has taught Physical Education since 1996 in a variety of locations, including 12 years in an International School in Tokyo. He is the current Junior School Sportsmaster at Toowoomba Grammar School.

The Indoor Sport program will provide a number of engaging activities designed to maximise participant enjoyment and develop functional movements. Children will have the opportunity to participate in futsal, modified games, aquatic activities and other competitive experiences. Participants will experience team-based scenarios and develop key leadership skills through social interactions and physical experiences.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Who will be supervising my child/ren?

A. The Summer Camp program will be overseen by the Headmaster of Toowoomba Grammar School, Mr Peter Hauser. Children attending the Basketball Activity will be under the care of the Toowoomba Grammar School’s Director of Basketball, Mr Kabe Cicolini. All other programs will be supervised by registered, full-time teachers employed by Toowoomba Grammar School.

Q. If minimum numbers are not met will I receive a refund?

A. A refund will be issued, or your child/ren can move to another program should you so desire.

Q. Do I need to register my child/ren for the full three days?

A. Bookings are for a three-day program.

Q. Is this a live-in camp?

A. No. The hours of the camp will be 8:30am – 4:00pm daily (Mon, 14 Jan – Wed, 16 Jan inc).

Q. Do I need to pack food for the day?

A. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided and children will eat in the Centenary Dining Hall of Toowoomba Grammar School.

Q. Is there an additional cost for meals to be provided?

A. No, the cost of meals has been factored into the program costs.

Q. What if my child/ren has food allergies?

A. A medical health form will be provided at registration. You will have the option to nominate special dietary requirements.

Q. What time do I collect my child?

A. The Holiday Camp finishes at 4:00pm each day; however collection can occur between 4:00 - 5:00pm daily from a central air-conditioned location. Children will be supervised during this period.
