As the Editor-in-Chief of Alfred’s keyboard products, I have been privileged over the years to introduce our newest books, resources, and initiatives to you—our valued piano teachers. In this issue of our summer mailer, I have asked my wife Gayle Kowalchyk to join me in presenting our spectacular line-up of new releases and to let you know why 2010 is a landmark year for us, both personally and professionally.

In March, we launched the Premier Support (PS) program for students—a way to reach out to the music teaching community in a meaningful way. If you haven’t already registered a student in this program, please see the enrollment details on pages 3 and 37.

In June, Alfred published the final level of core books for Premier Piano Course, the Level 6 Lesson Book with CD, Performance Book with CD, and Theory Book. We are elated to see these books in print after nearly ten years of a very rewarding journey with our distinguished co-authors—Dennis Alexander, Victoria McArthur, and Martha Mier.

We know that you will enjoy the music and appreciate the sound pedagogy of the entire eight levels, just as we have with our students (including our own children). The first ten pages of this catalog have been devoted to the Premier Piano Course so that you can see at a glance how well the scope and sequence of the series will fit your students.

Included in this catalog are outstanding new products for your teaching studio. Value Packs allow you to preview the latest publications with substantial savings. You can order them from Alfred’s Partners-in-Promotion retailers listed on pages 34–35.

Reserve some quiet time to thumb through this mini- catalog and choose the music for your students. We both wish you a wonderful, inspired teaching year!

Gayle Kowalchyk, Senior Keyboard Editor

E. L. Lancaster, Senior Vice President, Keyboard

See what teachers are saying about this program:Thank you for the opportunity to enroll one of my students in your program. I can hardly believe you are so generous. I have a student who is the third in her family to study piano, and it is wonderful to provide her with books that her sisters have not already used, so that she has brand new material–no hand-me-downs!” - Sr. Mary Carol, KY

Thank you very much. I delivered the first set of books to Alex just today. His mother was in tears when I told her what you were doing. She is also a student, and has led the way for her son and sacrificed so much financially to keep them both in lessons.” - Dee, IA

Meet the ComposersDennis Alexander has earned an international reputation as one of the most prolific and popular composers of piano music for students at all levels. His pieces have been staples on festival and syllabus lists for more than 20 years.

Martha Mier is the composer of the popular piano series Jazz, Rags & Blues, the top-selling supplemental piano series in the world. Because she taught piano for many years, her compositions reflect her keen sense of what students want to play and how they learn.

Performance Book 2A

Music That Students Love to Play

What teachers like about Premier Piano Course: • The Music of Dennis Alexander and Martha Mier is accessible and sounds great.• The emphasis on performing rhythms in patterns helps with reading and memorization.• Classical music is used in every level with a focus on characteristics of the musical style periods in the upper levels.

Premier Performer suggestions focus on developing imagery and listening to specific aspects of performance.

Page 5: Summer - Alfred Music · PDF filepopular piano series Jazz, ... Rhythms are read in multiple-note ... Level 3 students play syncopated, dotted, and swing rhythms with ease

See what teachers are saying about the music in Premier Piano CourseThe Premier series is incredible. I am always raving about it to anyone who will listen. The kids love all the blues and rags, and the teacher/student duets are fun. Actually, the reason I think I have so many students is because of the series. I keep thinking some of my piano kids will quit but they don’t. I even have more signed up, but no time!” - Twila, Nebraska

Kids of all levels love this music, play it in recitals and festivals, make lists of favorites that they hear in performance classes and want to play. On more than one occasion I have had students beyond the method book stage ask to play something they heard a younger kid perform simply because one of the pieces grabbed their attention. Truth is, under our old definitions of method books, Alfred’s Premier Piano Course doesn’t qualify. The music is far too good.” - Amy, New Mexico

Lesson Book 5Lesson Book 4Rhythms are taught in multiple-note patterns rather than as single notes.

Music in a variety of styles includes lyrical pieces, jazz, ragtime, and original music by master composers.

Theory Book 1B

Meet the PedagoguesDr. Victoria McArthur is Program Director of Piano Pedagogy at Florida State University, Tallahassee. She is a noted expert in the areas of piano technique, sight-reading, and practice strategies.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk and her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, have authored more than 400 educational piano books based on their years of experience on college faculties and in their independent piano studio. At Alfred, Gayle is Senior Editor of Supplemental Piano Publications and E. L. is Senior Vice President and Keyboard Editor-in-Chief.

What teachers like about Premier Piano Course: • The pacing and sound pedagogy produces strong sight-readers.• Music structure and concepts are presented in a fun and interactive way.

Music That Students Love to Play

Fun Zone theory activities reinforce musical concepts using topics that are relevant to students.

Page 7: Summer - Alfred Music · PDF filepopular piano series Jazz, ... Rhythms are read in multiple-note ... Level 3 students play syncopated, dotted, and swing rhythms with ease

See what teachers are saying about the pedagogy of Premier Piano CourseThe pacing of Premier is perfect. Concepts are thoroughly reinforced before moving ahead, and for students who can progress a little faster, there are extra activities in the Lesson, Theory, and Technique books.” - Mary, Montana I appreciate how the books help the students progress in an educationally sound manner with attention to keyboard skills, fingering (especially the red finger numbers that reinforce reading by notes, not by fingering), and overall structure of music. The workouts are beneficial and aid in the mastering of a passage that would have been difficult without first doing the designated workouts.” - Cheri, Washington

I enjoy teaching Premier Piano Course for one key reason: my students are learning to read music very well. I especially like the sight-reading examples on the flash cards.” - Bob, Ohio

Lesson Book 4 Theory Book 6

Workouts prepare students to overcome technical challenges.

Now Play This examples focus on developing sight-reading skills; Now Hear This examples develop ear-training skills.

The Piano for Busy Teens series was introduced to teachers and students during the summer of 2009 and it quickly became a top-seller. Teachers asked for more books at lower levels, so the authors created Books A and B, which precede Book 1. All five books include enticing original compositions by Melody Bober paired with time-saving study guides and strategic classical pieces prepared and edited by Gayle Kowalchyk and E. L. Lancaster.
