This semester required innovative ideas to offer quick, f lexible, non-credit training andcredentialing for the Molokai campus. We offered conversational Hawaiian language, renewableenergy and solar trainings, and digital design certif icate. While the ʻō lelo Hawai ʻ i class was offeredin-person at the Molokai Education Center, the renewable energy courses and digital design washeld completely online via Zoom. Both Zoom certif icates offered 100% tuition sponsorship.

The benefits of non-credit training is that it has a different fee structurethan regular college courses. Additionally , based on community needs andinterests, these trainings can be offered at any time of the year. We hope toprovide flexible trainings based on community input. The students in Carpentry 121 , led byinstructor Lloyd Inouye, worked on variousprojects this semester, including a quarantineshed for a Molokai family. With the completionof CARP 120 & CARP 121 , this cohort willgraduate this Spring with a Certif icate ofCompetence in Basic Carpentry Skil ls . Amongst this group of students are father-daughter duo, Chad Lima and Trinnity Lima-Napoleon. Trinnity is an Early College HighSchool student in the Ho ʻokele Program and thefirst female high school student to earn thiscertif icate. When asked what she enjoys aboutthe class, she says, “ Its pretty cool to now knowhow to read the carpenter square (to getstraight l ines and angles) . ” Her father ChadLima states, “Nice to have gained anunderstanding of how to read a carpentersmeasuring tape.” Are you Interested in learning some basiccarpentry skil ls or earning a certif icate?Contact CTE coordinator Olelo SchonelySpencer at (808) 553-4490 opt. 6 or via email atamandaos@hawaii .edu for more information oncourses.
