Deep appreciation is extended to you, as Carmel Public Library would not be able to exist without your support, now more important than ever! It is obviously an extraordinary time in the world, causing an unprecedented shift in life and the way things operate. However, with basic needs at the forefront, our library and staff continue to provide a vast array of resources online and via phone, supplying important access to information and vital connections for members of the community. The Foundation has also successfully pivoted in response, with our staff and Board of Directors as focused as ever on protecting our Library through adjustments in current and future fundraising programs. While this year’s highly anticipated Annual Fundraiser: The Presidential Edition featuring acclaimed historian, Douglas Brinkley, will be rescheduled for next year, we did move to an online fundraising event: the Cozy Read-A-Book Bash. “CRABB”, complete with mascot Milo the Carmel Crabb. This event was successfully launched online with great support and enthusiasm from donors and attracted new support through social media engagements. Stay tuned for next year’s CRABB and we hope to see you at the future “Presidential Edition” Event! The free Community Night Programs and Fireside Chats, which have been so well received, were often filled to capacity during the fall and winter. We are grateful for the wonderful speakers and all the attendees who were involved. While these evening events are currently on hiatus, we are exploring ways to continue to bring you the quality programming you have enjoyed. We are also delighted to announce that “The Gathering Place”, a beautiful new space at the Harrison Memorial Library made possible by Lacy Williams Buck and other generous donors, is ready and waiting for the day when patrons can once again gather. Though there are challenges, we are responding by tapping into creative potential, and many positive things are on the horizon. We are so fortunate to have a “full team” dedicated to the well-being of our library and community: Foundation and Library professionals, Foundation Board of Directors, Library Board of Trustees, Friends Of The Library, and the City of Carmel, and every donor and advocate. On behalf of all of us at the Carmel Public Library Foundation thank you for your incredible support and for being an important part of the heart of our community. A Message From the President

This issue is dedicated to you and all those who have supported the Carmel Public Library Foundation over the years, turning dreams for our treasured Carmel Public Library into reality and providing hope for the future.

As I look back on this year as President of the Board of Directors, I am especially grateful that we have such caring and generous donors to sustain our mission of keeping the library open, relevant and thriving in perpetuity. Your gifts to the Carmel Public Library Foundation provide 100% of the funding for the books, materials, programs, equipment and services.

We wish each of you and your loved ones safety, health and happiness. Together, we can achieve anything.

Cynthia McCoy,CPLF President

Libraries have had a large impact on Jackie Henning’s life. As a youngster she spent many happy hours combing through the card catalog in the beautiful Pasadena Public Library while researching assignments. The outdoor reading rooms/patios were a gathering

place to socialize with friends. Later, when she attended Smith College she found herself in the Neilson Library studying and writing in her own cozy carrel. In graduate school at the University of Michigan, her second home became the reading room in the Harlan Hatcher

Graduate Library with its elegant arched windows and gorgeous woodwork. While raising her two children, she was regularly in the childrens’ section at the Aurora Public Library, checking out books and attending story hour. Today she and her husband, Peter, are again attending story hours at the Sausalito and SF Marina Libraries this time with their grandchildren. Ms. Henning’s professional work was primarily in educational administration at the University and Community College levels. She has served on several community boards and is very excited to join the Carmel Public Library Foundation board.

Welcome New Board Director

Thank you for keeping the library open, relevant and

thriving.

With Your Library Support Our Community Thrives

This year’s annual campaign message “Carmel Public Library: It’s Our Community,” feels particularly relevant as we embrace our collective priorities and work towards navigating these

challenging times together. While the library continues to be a repository of knowledge, it also operates as a critical link to our community, providing access to all, and developing ongoing partnerships with other institutions to connect people with services and assistance.

The current health crisis of Covid-19 has given us pause for reflection and created a surreal environment in which many of us find ourselves searching for information and truth. Now more than ever we turn to our library to help raise our collective consciousness as we sift through life’s complexities and reshape our tomorrow.

We thank you for your generous support and foresight. Our team of board directors are busy developing relevant programs for you in the upcoming season and we look forward to seeing you at our programs (online) and in person when the time is right.

Sterling Circle Planned Giving

Create a Legacy with the LibraryThe Sterling Circle Program is the cornerstone of the Foundation’s future funding capabilities. This program recognizes planned giving donors who demonstrate their deep commitment to the library by including the Carmel Public Library Foundation in their estate plans and wills. Sterling Circle Donors play a key role in ensuring the library’s place in the community – open and free – for generations to come.

Become a Sterling Circle DonorSimply inform us of your interest. The amount and conditions of your gift are entirely up to you with any amount being appreciated and completely confidential.

Tomorrow’s results are created by today’s intentions. Many people

contemplate how they can support the library and ensure its growth and sustainability in the future. Some find that a good way

to accomplish this is to designate Carmel Public Library

Foundation as the beneficiary of a gift from their estate plan or will. These gifts provide a tax deduction and have a tremendous impact on our ability to keep the library open, relevant and thriving. If you would like information, please contact Alexandra Fallon at 831.624.2811. Joining the Sterling Circle is easy, and the amount and conditions of your gift remain confidential.

Made possible by the generosity of

Lacy Williams Buck, the support of our community as well as the Carmel Public Library Foundation

The Gathering Place

Our deepest gratitude to Lacy Willams Buck and CPLF whose generosity made The Gathering Place, our first free meeting space for our community possible.

As our community emerges from this challenging time, we will look for safe, welcoming and effective ways to be together. The library is poised to provide those opportunities as well as ways to help navigate our impending new future.
