DISTRICT
Farewell, FriendsThe 2018-2019 school year marked the final
year for Hadden, Hale Road, Leroy and Madison Avenue elementary schools.
These four buildings, which were all built in the 1920s and 1930s, are a rich part of our community’s history and will always be remembered.
In the Spring of 2019, the District hosted a Community Farewell Open House for each of the closing schools. During that time, nearly 2,000 Riverside alumni from all over the country

Welcome . . .Welcome . . .Welcome . . .Keeping Our Community Informed
Parents: Mark and Allison LeopoldSiblings: Rachael (22), Aidan (14), Andrew (14)Residence: Painesville TownshipElementary School: St. Mary’s (K-1), Homeschool (2-5)Middle School: LaMuthMost Challenging Class: AP Chemistry as it was the first one for which I had to study from the textbook and with friends outside of class, and there were heaps of homework – but it was also my most rewarding class and I loved it.Extracurriculars: Riverside Regiment, Pit Orchestra, Pep Band, National Honor SocietyExtracurriculars (non-school): Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony, Jazz Impact, St. Cyprian’s Catholic Church, volunteer at Lake MetroparksCollege Plans: University of Alabama, College of Arts & SciencesMajor: Undecided, but will definitely be studying science (perhaps marine biology or physics) and minoring in the liberal arts through the Blount Scholars ProgramThe best thing about Riverside and the Riverside Local Schools: The abundance of interesting people, and the amount of them who excel in more than one area; i.e. the intersection of sports people, music people, art people, drama people, computer people, and all the people.Advice for future Riverside graduates: Whatever you’re doing, love it. Don’t show up just because you have to. Live and breathe your music, art, sport, club, or whatever it is you do because one day you will graduate, and another day you will die; you can’t get high school back after either of those events.

Parents: Daniel and Kristine MeldrumSiblings: Nicholas (16)Residence: Painesville TownshipElementary School: Hale RoadMiddle School: LaMuthMost Challenging Class: AP Chemistry – there were a lot more conceptual applications (versus mathematical/algebraic) than what I was comfortable with. Additionally, the course moves at a really fast pace because there is so much content – try to miss as few days as possible!Extracurriculars: Cross Country, Track, Riverside Revue, National Honor SocietyExtracurriculars (non-school): Volunteering at Riverside Youth Running Club and also at various St. Gabriel Church eventsCollege Plans: Georgia Institute of TechnologyMajor: Environmental EngineeringThe best thing about Riverside and the Riverside Local Schools: The AP community, teachers and classmates alike. Because of the program’s rigor, teachers constructively pushed you to gain a deeper understanding of course content, while classmates provided a competitive yet supportive environment to grow and succeed.Advice for future Riverside graduates: It’s easy to get caught up in the little things and start stressing over how to get through each week. From time to time, take a step back and reflect on the progress you’ve made over the long term. Oh, and don’t forget to breathe while you’re at it.
CONGRATULATIONS!

District (37 years total in Education), the 2018-2019 school year marked the final year of Leroy Elementary Principal Greg Miller’s career.
Mr. Miller began his career in Ventura, California in 1982 before being hired as a math teacher at John R. Williams Jr. High School in 1984. He moved to Hale Road Elementary in 1985 and then taught math and science from 1989 until 2007 at Auburn Road Jr. High School (now LaMuth Middle School).
In 2007, he was hired as the assistant principal at John R. Williams before becoming principal at Leroy Elementary in 2010.
Mr. Miller is an exceptional leader who cares deeply for his students, staff and the Riverside Community. He is very much respected and appreciated by all in the District and we wish him and his family well in his retirement. Congratulations on an outstanding career, Mr. Miller!
In addition to Mr. Miller, congratulations to each of the other teachers and staff members across the District who retired following the 2018-2019 school year. By the start of the 2019-2020 school year, at least 30 school buses will be equipped with interior and exterior camera systems. Twenty-five of the camera systems were purchased through funds received from two different grants – Ohio Attorney General Safety Grant and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Safety and Security Grant. The other five camera systems are being purchased with funds from the Permanent Improvement Fund.
The camera systems are equipped with high resolution video and audio. The cameras are placed underneath the buses’ stop sign, the rear exterior of the bus, and four cameras are placed throughout the interior of each bus. Drivers who fail to obey safety laws will be reported to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
“The clarity of the videos from these cameras are second to none,” said Transportation Director James Haffa. “Having these cameras have helped us tremendously. Bus drivers get frustrated when motorists drive through the stop sign. Their first priority is to make sure the kids are safe, so they don’t always have the time or the ability to get the driver’s license plate number. With these new

cameras, we can get the plate numbers easily and report it to authorities. Drivers need to learn to stop for the buses.”
“So far, we’ve been able to make enforcement action on most of the violators,” added Steven Jefferies, an Ohio State Highway Patrolman as well as a Riverside Board Member. “Those that run the bus stop sign must appear in court and go in front of the judge, they cannot just pay the fine. It’s a mandatory court appearance.”
The grants also included school emergency radio system upgrades and four two-way radio systems that have access to first responders.
The District would like to thank the following businesses, organizations, and individuals for their donations, which were approved by the Board of Education between Febrauary 2019 and May 2019:
