It’s actually below 98 degrees - fall must be just around the corner. High time to fill in some details about fall events for the UL Bands. Many of you have been eager for more info about our plans for camp and the season, so here’s what we know, including an introduction to our new Marching Band Director & Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Jason Missal. The faculty worked hard and fast to run a thorough national search and to find someone who can take The Pride of Acadiana to the next level. Now, we couldn’t be happier with the result. Dr. Missal is in the process of moving to Lafayette, and meanwhile, Dr. Brett Landry (Asst. Director of Bands and Percussion) & I will do all we can to hold down the fort and make things ready for camp. The skinny: Jason Missal is a native of Stillwater, OK and did his UG work at Oklahoma State, where his father is Director of Bands. He did several years of public school band work in Jenks, OK (a BOA national program) and then Masters work at Colorado with Allan McMurray. He taught at Abilene Christian for 4 years and just finished his Doctorate at UT with Jerry Junkin. Plenty of marching band credits and a masterful conductor. Dr. Brett Landry is a product of Lafayette HS, then LSU, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and USC in Columbia, SC. He ran the band at NISH for several years and also worked on faculty at USC. We are truly fortunate (and very excited) to be able to bring these outstanding music educators with skills in arranging, drill writing, conducting, performance, and teaching to UL. This team means we have real excellence in all of those areas and we couldn’t be better positioned for success and growth. Now, on to the information you’ve been wondering about: answers to questions about the Band Camp Schedule, Dorm Check In, and other details. Please read the newsletter all the way through and many of your questions should be answered. Keep in mind, however, that two “new guys” are about to come on board, and that even yours truly is pretty much another “new guy,” having left most marching band duties to Dr. Melley for years. (Not to worry, though, any day now, those 4 decades of experience should kick in and I will recall how to do these things. Meanwhile, the motto around here is: “Subject to Change” (STC)—something to keep in mind as we work through the next 3 months.) Dr. Melley was able to do great things for the UL Bands during his time here and we wish him well in Providence. No doubt many of the things you read below will be familiar since we are building on his years of hard work. The UL Band has grown impressively since my arrival here in 1993 only (92 members back then) and we will continue to build on that. Several points to review carefully (STC): pay careful attention to the dorm check in and band camp schedules. There are staggered report times for different sections. Be sure you show up when you are assigned (STC). For The Pride, All sections are in good shape—a fine roster of both Formers and Rookies. Furthermore, this would be an exciting time to reactivate if you (or someone you know) has been inactive. So if you’ve been on the fence for whatever reason: joins us! To do that, or if you would like to switch instruments, just email us and we will work on it. The most important thing for everyone to do right now is to REGISTER for band camp. If you have not yet done so, please do this today!! Your scholarship can only be credited to your university account once that is done. Take care of sending in your info NOW and that will ensure there are fewer questions, difficulties, and delays. Some things are still in the works: the shows, (including how many) the tunes, & the arrangements—but you can expect more variety. Check back soon on the website as exercises and music might be posted there. Practice some and work up your endurance before camp so you don’t hurt yourself. We are around in the office most days and are always available by email, so let us know if you have any questions. We will be happy to help and we are looking forward to seeing you at camp. - Dr. Hochkeppel Your Leadership Team Dr. Wm. J. S u m m e r N e w s l e t t e rDEAR PRIDE,

Welcome to Part II of our summer correspondence! Course Conflicts Occasionally some students have a class conflict with a

required class that meets at the same time as band. We may approve missing some band rehearsal (per week) if the class meets these requirements:✴ Is required of your major✴ The class is only offered in one section✴ Progress toward your degree will be delayed unless resolved✴ Not applicable to multiple section courses (English/Math)

If you are unsure whether your class qualifies, please contact us. Also, we can help you arrange your schedule to accommodate all classes and even help you with closed sections.

If you do have an approved conflict, register for the class that conflicts with band first. At band camp, we will take care of enrolling you in the band.

Pep Band Events The Pride appears at many events outside of pre-game and halftime. In order to respect your time, the wind and percussion sections are divided into 3 pep bands. This way, the band has representation but students need only attend 1/3 of the pep band performances.

There are no excused absences from Pep Band events. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a substitute who plays your instrument. Pep Band assignments will be administered during Band Camp.

PRIDEChecklist for Uniforms

You will be issued a PoA band uniform, member t-shirt, and pep band t-shirt.

All members need to have khaki shorts and belt to wear with the pep band t-shirt, along with athletic shoes.

Winds and Percussion will need to purchase BLACK marching band shoes (dinkles or drillmasters), solid BLACK socks (that cover the ankle), and winds - BLACK gloves. Lafayette Music has a special combo price for shoes and gloves. No-show or ankle socks are not acceptable.

Guard will need to purchase black jazz pants and black dance shoes. Captains will be contacting you on the specifics.

Band Camp (REGISTER!) Refillable water jug–THIS IS A MUST! We’ll be working hard

days in the Louisiana sun and you’ve got to stay hydrated Sunscreen/block with high SPF Hat Sunglasses Rain gear - we rehearse rain or shine! Athletic shoes for all marching rehearsals. You will not be

allowed to march if you’re not wearing proper footwear (absolutely no flip flops or sandals!). A second pair of socks in case of rain is also recommended.

Wind and percussion players will need a flip folder with a lot of pages. Please note this change for returning percussionists.

Pencil Bring your instrument and accessories (reeds, mouthpiece,

neck strap, sticks, mallets-NO RED MOUTHPIECES, PLEASE). Play your instrument to make sure it is in working condition before camp. School instrument check out will be at camp registration - we provide the instrument, you provide your own mouthpieces and accessories.

Be prepared to secure some meals. Dinner and lunch will be provided for the band Sunday through Friday (8/13-8/18), but breakfast is on your own.

All parking rules will be enforced during weekdays from 7:00-4:00. On campus students will have parking assigned for their dorm. Off campus students will be given parking information at camp.

Watch for notices on the website (ulbands.com) for sheet music in advance of camp beginning Sunday, August 13.

Game Days For football game days, you will need to reserve the full day. Activities include rehearsal in the stadium followed by time to shower, eat, and change before the game. For each home game (except Homecoming) one pep band will perform at Cajun Walk. Kickoff times are tentative and the game day schedule will be set when final kick-off times are announced.
