Child abuser DJ boasted of crime onlineA FORMER local radio host who sexually abused a schoolgirl was caught when a friend tricked him into admitting his sordid crime.

Paedophile James Russell, 56, an ex-Radio Clyde presenter and announcer at Motherwell FC, right, met what he believed was a stranger on a swingers website and confessed how he abused the youngster.

He showed his new friend a photograph of the girl – unaware that she knew the child.

However, he did not realise that the online profile of the person he was talking to was made up by a suspicious acquaintance.

During a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, his victim, now 16, told a jury she had been indecently assaulted by Russell – who was yesterday convicted of abusing the girl when she was between ten and 11 years old and taking indecent photographs of her.

Russell, from Govanhill, Glasgow, was also found guilty of possessing other indecent images.

A female friend of Russell’s told the court that she was suspicious of him and carried out an internet search. She found him on a swingers website and created a fake pro-file, which caught his attention.

Russell asked the woman to speak on an instant chat website and at one point had the user name peter.fyle.

During online conversations, Russell described how he molested the girl.

The woman later contacted police. She said in evidence: ‘I was very shocked. I knew I had to take it further.’

Sheriff Sam Cathcart deferred sentence until next month and placed Russell on the sex offenders’ register.

TWO men attacked an elderly couple in their home in a ‘terrifying’ robbery bid.

Police believe the incident, which happened in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire at 11pm on Sunday, was a ‘targeted attack’.

Officers said the couple, an 81-year-old woman and 80-year-old man, were at home when the men forced entry, demanded money and assaulted them with a weapon.

But the woman managed to get to the front garden of the property and alert neighbours, while the attackers fled empty-handed.

The couple were treated at the scene by ambulance staff.

The suspects are described as being local men, aged 20 to 40 and of medium height and build. They were wearing dark clothing and their faces were covered.

Detective Constable Iain McCulloch said: ‘This was a terrifying incident for this eld-erly couple. It is incredibly fortunate the woman managed to alert neighbours.’

Water colours: Art decorates the revamped public convenience

Wash and brush up: Local volunteers transformed the toilets

IT was earmarked to go down the pan – but local residents had other ideas.

Built in the 1970s, the public convenience in Easthaven, b e t we e n A r b r o a t h a n d Carnoustie, had fallen into disrepair and Angus Council wanted to close it.

Now the toilets have been given a makeover – and trans-formed into an art gallery by locals. Volunteers modernised and decorated the building, which has now been named the

Wee Gallery At The Heritage Point. Soap, hand towels and fresh flowers are provided daily – and visitors can browse works by local artists as they go about their business.

Wendy Murray, lead trustee of charity Easthaven Together, said: ‘It’s maybe not the Louvre but the art has become a hit with visitors and the paintings, which are available for sale, really brighten the walls.’

Beautiful East Haven East Haven was awarded Gold in the Beautiful Scotland Awards and trophy for the best coastal village in 2015. To our delight we were also awarded the Jim Murdie sustainability award. This award recognises the way in which we have integrated sustainability into all our activities and made links to other important plans both locally and nationally. East Haven has it's own sustainability strategy which comprises just one side of A4 so do make sure you download it from our web-site to see how everything we do builds on our charitable aims and encourages sustainability. In 2016 we are celebrating 50 years of Beautiful Scotland so look out for displays amongst the gardens in colours of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Saltire, green, blue, gold and purple.

Mary's Meals

Completion of the new cairn at the head of the cycle path in 2015 provided a secure base for donations to Mary's Meals. Last year Morag and Tom Tindal raised over £700 for the charity through provision of free refreshments for visitors. This year, further work has been undertaken to complete improvements and create a warm welcome to the many cyclists and walkers using National Cycle route 1. ..................................................................

East Haven BioBlitz East Haven is holding it's first ever BioBlitz on 26th and 27th August this year. This exciting event brings together, scientists, experts and other interested bodies to work alongside members of the public to identify as many species of animals, insects, plants and marine life as possible over two days. The BioBlitz is a partnership event between Tayside Biodiversity Partnership, Scottish Natural Heritage, Angus Council and East Haven Together. Our team of experienced naturalists and wildlife watchers will need your help to find and identify as many different species as possible over the two days. Everything identified will be recorded and the data submitted to national databases. There will be talks, demonstrations and on-site surveys so whatever your interest there is something for everybody. A full programme of events will be made available nearer the time but here is a flavour of what will be happening;

Consultation with residents highlighted strong support for a Community Petanque course in the vil lage. For the uninitiated, Petanque is a game of french boules in which people of all ages and all abilities can participate. Nicola and John have led on this exciting project having obtained support and resources f rom Landmarc Suppor t Services staff at Barry Buddon. We are very grateful for al l their assistance and look forward to playing our first games by the end of July.

A joint venture with the Tayside Biodiversity Partnership and Butterfly Conservation Scotland saw us plant Kidney Vetch across six sites near the beach in May. Kidney Vetch is the sole food plant of the priority species the Small Blue which is the smallest butterfly in the UK. In what was a true partnership project, Angus business Scotia Seeds provided the locally sourced seeds and new business, Celtica Wildflowers from Perthshire grew them on into robust plants. We are delighted to report that the plants have thrived so we are hopeful that we will be able to connect to a Kidney Vetch corridor along the Angus coa s t to protect and conserve this rare butterfly.
