The lectionary this Easter season has brought us a wealth of my favorite scriptures on the topics of love and action. Last week’s Gospel of John brought us : “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends... You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last...I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.” On the way out of the sanctuary this past Sunday, one person asked with wide eyes, “Which fruit?” (Meaning, “How do we discern where to put our efforts in ministry?”) Another wondered, “Am I supposed to knock on my neighbors’ doors and tell them about God’s love? I feel like faith is a private matter.” These are both good and important questions, and ones that many Christians struggle with. Jesus’ call to “love one another” and to “bear fruit that will last” are at the heart of discipleship. At a time when the Church is transitioning from an institution-al/establishment model to one of a mission society and a largely secular world, it is important to ask some questions anew: What is the role of faith in the public sphere? What does the Gospel have to offer the world we live in? What does the Church have that people need? And, what is my responsibility in all this? This summer, I’ll be offering two book studies to help us ex-plore these questions both individually and corporately. In July, we’ll look at The (Un)Common Good: How the Gospel Brings Hope to a Divided World by Jim Wallis. Wallis, founder of Sojourners, is a well known evangelical Christian writer and activist, who has writ-ten extensively on the topic of faith and politics. In August, we’ll examine Dr. Miroslav Volf’s book A Public Faith: How Followers of Christ Should Serve the Common Good. Volf has the rare distinc-tion of having served at both Fuller Theological Seminary and Yale Divinity School (two very different institutions). He has been called a “theologian of the bridge”, his work looking to help bridge the divides of this world with the truth of God’s love. The book studies will be offered Wednesdays, July 15 and 29. and August 12 and 26, at 11am and 6pm. Please sign up in the Parish Hall if you plan to attend (both morning and evening ses-sions will be a “go” once we have 6 people signed up). Books are available through Amazon.com.

Thanks to our dedicated Sunday School volunteers, we con-tinue to offer 2 Sunday School classes and the nursery! We had a successful Easter Season, and we’ve had a steady number of children in both classes and the nursery over the past couple months. The children recently made an announcement at the 9:30 service requesting the congregation to increase their donations for A Cup of Cold Water (ACCW). The children created new boxes and a donation list that can be found on the church activities board. On Sunday, June 7th after the 9:30 service, the Sunday School children will participate in a Service Day. The young people will take the donated items down to Good Shepherd to stock the ACCW van and pantry. After stocking the van, they will volunteer at Good Shepherd’s Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen where they will help serve lunch to community members. We will continue to offer classes through June, but will take a “summer break” for the month of July. Classes will resume in August. Mahalo to all who continue to tirelessly serve in this important ministry!

Where’s the Priest-in-Charge? With the help from the Nellie Hartman “Here I Am, Send Me” grant program, Rev. Kerith is heading to Oaxaca, Mexico, for two weeks in June for Spanish Immersion. Asked about her motivation for such unusual continuing education, Rev. Kerith said, “I’ve always been disappointed I didn’t study Spanish in school, and I am reminded of it every time a Spanish speaker comes to one of our community dinners. I’d like to be able to welcome them in their native tongue, even if it means just saying a few friendly words.” Asked about her ambitions for the program, Rev. Kerith reported that while she doesn’t expect to be fl uent in two weeks, she does hope to learn to say the Eucharist in Spanish and to build a foundation upon which to continue deeper learning in the future. After Mexico, Rev. Kerith will spend 48 hours with her family in Texas before moving on to Colorado for a clergy retreat. Her clergy group, which began meeting before any of the members were ordained, has been together since seminary. They meet semi-monthly by phone, and annually or bi-annually in person. Rev. Kerith reports that they rotate their meeting locations depending on where the members of the group are serving at any given time, trying to make travel as inexpensive, convenient, and low-impact (carbon emissions) as possible. This year’s dates and location were chosen for close proximity to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, to which two of the members are deputies.

One of the objectives of the Finance Committee is to re-view, monitor and develop all pertinent fi nancial information that will provide the vestry, congregation, and diocese an accurate picture of the parish’s fi nancial performance. With that objective in mind, our income and expenses in the fi rst quarter are in line with our budget. What I, on behalf of the Finance Committee, would really like to express in this newsletter is to share with you what the Vestry accomplished in 2014 by the restructuring of our funds to be in alignment with our Vision. You may recall the vision-ing process we went through in August of 2013 when we defi ned our goals (here edited for brevity’s sake) to be 1) to ensure our worship, music and fellowship are accessible and energizing; 2) to turn outward and put our faith into action in innovative and exciting ways; 3) to strengthen and expand our spiritual formation and education programs for all ages; 4) to look after the care and wise use of our facilities; and 5) to return to full parish status. Our major funds are defi ned as either restricted or

Meet St. John’s Incoming Assistant Treasurer!Gretchen Spring has lived on Maui since 1976 and has been involved with St. John’s since 2006. She recently retired from her long career as an accountant and is “enjoying fi nding the time to do the things you put off to do when you retire.” You’ll often see her accompanied at church by her son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Sonjia, and adorable granddaughter, Toni. She looks forward to becoming more involved at St. John’s by joining us as Assistant Treasurer in July and taking on the mantle of Treasurer beginning in January 2016.

NEWS FROM THE DAWES In early December, St. John’s bid farewell to Doreen and Richard Dawe, longtime St. John’s parishioners who began their parish-life in 1981 when Father Bob Burton was the priest. They moved to a retirement home in Kailua-Kona and report in a recent letter that though they miss Maui, they love their new beautiful place. During their time at St. John’s, they could be found at many rummage sales and Kula Festivals. Richard spent many hours mowing, paint-ing, and erecting two storage buildings. He also helped to erect the fl agpole and cor-responding plaque (with the help of David Baar, Fred Lacar and Curly McArdle) honoring Col. Robert Doe, which has a 50-year time capsule buried beneath it. Doreen helped to orga-nize the Christmas Boutique who’s proceeds purchased a new riding mower, and carpet for the offi ce and parish hall. She won the Rector’s Award for her service. The Dawes were also instrumental in or-ganizing St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at Seabury Hall. They plan to keep fond memories of their many happy hours spent with the wonderful members of St. John’s.

St. John’s bids a fond farewell to Kay and Adel Kunisawa on May 24. Active members of St. John’s since 2002, they will be moving to Olympia, WA to live closer to their children and grandchildren. Dedicated to getting to know people and welcoming newcomers to St. John’s, the Kunisawas have always been very involved in the fellowship of our church. They brought a gentle and calming pres-ence to all the activities they participated in - including serving on the vestry and altar guild, organizing crafters and setting up for the Kula Festival, photographing St. John’s innumerable events and (perhaps best of all!) contributing regularly to the St. John’s Journal. They could always be counted on to volunteer whenever help was needed, and will be greatly missed!

Farewell to the Kunisawas!

It was a deeply rewarding personal experience of sharing ways we have known loss and been impacted by death. There was the realization that dying requires letting go of so much of what has been valued in our lives as we say goodbye and open to the infi nite possibilities that await us beyond. There were about fi fteen of us and all were deeply present and participated freely. We watched a fi lm focusing on after-life experiences and also did inner exercises to deepen our refl ection and emotional pres-ence. People were moved in different ways...one person shared how deeply meaningful it was to him to see and feel the depth of love shown by elephants returning to caress and hold with their trunks the bones of departed friends each year. He felt the depth of their remembrance within his opened heart. Many have asked to participate if we offer this workshop again. I hope that we shall.

Keeping St. John’s BeautifulART AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE SERIES

St. John’s members gath-ered during the evenings of Lent to explore the connec-tion between their artistic endeavors and their spiri-tual practice. Every year, St. John’s hosts a Lenten Soup Supper series, and this year, members got to be hands-on in their practice, experiment-ing with a different art form each week. Our sanctuary was recently painted and the results are outstand-ing! John Hirashima and his crew were able to pull of this feat in less than a week. All of the pews were removed and carried outside to be carefully spray painted by John himself. But fi rst he took an entire pew all the way to Home Depot to be color matched! I’ve been told (by Bill Bonnet) it was quite a sight seeing the pew rolling in to the store fi rst thing in the morning. It sure worked, because everything matches perfectly. All of this was timed perfectly to avoid any poor weather while the outside painting occurred over two days. Meanwhile the fl oors inside were scraped, primed, and painted. The walls were painted up to the dividing line and all of the win-dow arches and trim were primed and painted. Several photos of the process and the completed job were posted to our Facebook site and got some of the most “likes” and comments we’ve ever had. Great job and many thanks to John and all the volunteers! If you’d like to join us in keeping St. John’s beautiful, our next work day will focus on landscaping. We will trim and remove “volun-teer” trees, weeds, and underbrush on June 13 from 9am - 12pm. All are welcome. Please contact me for more info: 808-205-0999.

Easter Weekend 2015 Celebrations at St. John’s

e St. John’s Choir was joined by trumpeter Cody Sarmiento and Music Director Bob Wills in making a joyful noise on Easter.

Children and parents gathered in the Parish Hall kitchen on Good Friday to decorate hard boiled eggs for donation to A Cup of Cold Water and St. John’s annual egg hunt. 72 colored eggs were distributed to some of ACCW’s homeless clients on Easter Sun-day. An ACCW outreach worker reports that, when in Kihei, he said, “ ese eggs were specially made for you. ey came from all the way up there (points mauka), a church called St. John’s... kids made these just for you for Easter Sunday,” the client replied, “Really...wow... that’s nice... tell them thanks..I’ll eat mine right now, right now.”
