Outdoor Living Spaces

Creating an outdoor room is a relatively easy way to increase your home’s footprint, its value, and the quality of life you enjoy there. Once thought to be an out-of-reach backyard daydream, the outdoor room has definitely gone mainstream with fireplaces, water features, and entertainment stations. These enhancements form the second most popular category of home improvement projects. Here are the top trends to consider for your own outdoor remodel.

Bringing the indoors outdoors Gardens, terraces, patios, gazebos, and other outdoor areas continue to be popular means of extending the boundaries of homeowners’ living spaces. American consumers are looking to furnish them with such amenities as: all-season furniture upholstered in weather-resistant fabrics, top-of-the-line grills, fireplaces, decorative pillows and rugs, and accessories such as artwork and statuary.

Colorful container gardening These space-saving displays have always been favorite outdoor elements, and now the trend is going a step further with planters in a range of eye-catching shapes and colors. Such classy containers become artful accessories in themselves, adding interest when planted and arranged in clusters, placed in flower beds, or built up as vertical gardens.

Front-yard landscaping Where backyards are smaller, water features, fences, courtyards, and patios are moving out front, adding impact and individuality.

New-and-improved decks and patios Weatherproof and wood alternatives are in demand, and a wider selection of natural products such as tumbled stone and brick are paving the way.

Exterior lightscapes Hard-wired lighting illuminates the garden, trees and house, both to brighten outdoor rooms and enhance security.

Water features Fountains and other water elements enhance sight and sound, while landscaped ponds, streams, and lighted waterfalls offer peace and relaxation in outdoor rooms.

Outdoor fireplaces Whether a simple portable fire pit or a custom-built structure, a fireplace lends ambiance and creates a focal point for gatherings.

Smart irrigation systems Customized to outdoor spaces and supporting the green theme of water conservation, irrigation systems can now think for you. A lawn sensor system can measure soil moisture and automatically operate sprinklers, providing a lush landscape and beautiful view from your outdoor room.

Affordable Financing The question now is how to finance your space? That’s where HVFCU can help. We have a number of options from which to choose for financing your project, including the ever popular home equity. You can apply online and get an answer in the time it takes to swing a hammer. Both fixed and variable rates are available and you’ll receive a rate discount when you arrange for automatic payment. Go to hvfcu.org for details and application.

HVFCU officially celebrated the opening of our new Carmel branch at its Grand Opening on May 18th. The day was filled with sunshine and smiles as the Putnam County community came out in full force to show their support for the branch. The event was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony with HVFCU staff and Board of Directors. Putnam County Historian Denis Castelli spoke with members about Putnam County history, and members had an opportunity to enter our raffle and win a pontoon boat ride from Mahopac Marina, or gift certificates to Health & Harmony Massage & Wellness Center, the Centennial Golf Club, or The Terrace Club. A caricature artist was on hand to sketch members (both young and young-at-heart), and Johnny Gelato served up ice cream, signaling the end of a day-long celebration.

The new Carmel branch is located at 2 Terrace Drive (at Stoneleigh Avenue and Terrace Drive, near Route 6) and features six teller windows, two drive-up tellers, and a drive-up ATM. We are pleased to offer members drive-up facilities, which were not available at our previous Carmel location. Along with the move, we’ve also expanded our evening and Saturday hours. The branch is now open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 7:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Help Students Stay in Touch With Their Finances and Keep Fees at BayAs they leave home this summer, thousands of college-bound students will be faced with managing and budgeting their money. Before they move on campus, parents will want to set up an HVFCU free checking account with Visa Debit card in addition to the following tips, and “must haves” to help keep fees at bay:

• Enroll your student in Internet Banking/Mobile Banking to help them keep tabs on their account balances.

• Set up CUAlerts and text alerts to help your student know when account balances are getting low or funds are being deposited.

• Replenish your student’s account once a month, or once a semester, to encourage budgeting.

• Students can pay their freinds (for pizza or shared bills, etc.) via email or text from their HVFCU account using the free PopMoney feature in Bill Pay.

• Mistakes can happen. Arrange for checking account overdraft protection from savings to avoid returned items and their associated fees.

• Stay within the maximum network ATM transactions. HVFCU allows eight free network transactions each month before charging a fee.

• Encourage your student to use surcharge-free network ATMs to reduce additional fees. A list of surcharge-free network participants can be viewed at hvfcu.org or via our mobile app.

• Use the point of sale cash back option to get cash.

Carmel Grand Opening Fifty Years and CountingANNUAL MEETINg HVFCU held its 50th Annual Members Meeting in April at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie with over four hundred members in attendance, including one of our original founding members, Richard Baright. Prior to the meeting, members enjoyed an on-screen retrospective highlighting the history and memories of the credit union from 1963 to present day.

Guest speaker Todd Buchholz, a former White House senior economic advisor, discussed how global economic issues affect us locally in a variety of ways. Fifty members won scratch-off tickets for $50 in our member drawing, and anniversary cake and refreshments were served following the meeting.

THE HVFCU CrEW Another way we’re celebrating HVFCU’s 50th Anniversary this year is with a special team—The HVFCU Crew. This group of staff have been hitting the streets, conducting random acts of kindness and participating in special events throughout our community. They’ve given out gift cards in Newburgh to veterans, free gas in Montgomery, pet supplies to a shelter in Putnam County, and free coffee to commuters at the Beacon train station. You never know what The Crew will do next! Be sure to check us out on Facebook or Twitter for Crew updates.

Advice

Teach Your Children to Save for CollegeBeing part of the college planning process can be very educational for children, as it presents them with valuable financial lessons for the future. Children can earn money, learn about sources of financial aid, and take other steps that may relieve their parents of some of the responsibility of college planning.

Get an Early StartMost children don’t make plans for their higher education until they are well into high school, but the foundation for saving and planning for college can take place much earlier. Many financial experts believe the best time to introduce children to college planning is when they are in the sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.

You may also want to encourage your children to begin thinking about the career they would like to pursue, which is likely to influence their choice of college, as well as to establish a savings account that could be earmarked for education expenses. In addition, you can teach basic lessons about investing and other money management issues.

Take It to a Higher Gear in High SchoolBy the time they reach high school, many students are mature enough to plan for college at a deeper level, including the following:

• Learning about college costs – Students may gain a deeper appreciation of their family’s financial sacrifices when they realize how expensive college costs are. They can learn about these expenses from a number of sources, including the College Board (collegeboard.com) and the U.S. Department of Education (ed.gov).

• Researching scholarships – There are numerous websites with information about sources of financial aid. For example, fastweb.com and finaid.org contain search engines with data about thousands of scholarships with varying eligibility criteria. In addition, fafsa.ed.gov provides an overview of federal student aid programs. Also, local libraries and high school guidance offices may have information about state-sponsored aid programs and scholarships sponsored by local organizations.

• Earning money – High school students can set aside a portion of their wages from part-time or summer jobs for higher education expenses. Also, students may be able to obtain jobs that build on career interests as a way of solidifying their future plans.

You and your future college student may be able to think of more ideas that could add value to your family’s efforts to save for a college education. Getting your promising scholar involved in the process – financially and otherwise – could ultimately be a pivotal lesson in responsibility that impacts his or her later success in life.
