Swimming pools can provide welcome relief from the heat of summer. the Code Compliance department is providing the following code requirements and tips to

make your backyard swimming experiences safe and enjoyable.

Glendale City Code Requirements

Having a swimming pool, spa, hot tub or other bodies of water designed for swimming purposes brings added responsibilities to owners, lessees and tenants. in order to address potential safety hazards, the City of Glendale has adopted city codes as precautionary measures. Here are some highlights from the Glendale City Code:

• Swimming pools must be entirely enclosed by at least a five (5) foot barrier. required barriers can include walls, fences and other structures including houses or accessory buildings.

• required barriers must not have any openings through which a ball four inches in diameter can pass.

• Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 54 inches above the ground.

• Gates must open outward from the pool.

• barriers and enclosures must be maintained in proper operating order.

• Swimming pools must be maintained in a condition that is not polluted, stagnant or blighting.

the Glendale City Code requires additional (secondary) barriers when persons younger than six (6) years of age will or do reside at a property with a swimming pool, spa, hot tub or other bodies of water (above or below ground) used for swimming. A copy of the City of Glendale’s swimming pool requirements is available at www.GlendaleAZ.com.
