Paper, Ink & Beyond…Choosing A Recycled Paper

What Are The Benefits of Environment-Friendly Printing?By selecting a green printer, such as KB OFFSET, you have an immediate opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint with minimal effort. At the same time, your high-visibility materials that are used by employees and customers will be produced in an environmentally-friendly manner — helping to attract new clients.

Equally beneficial are print-on-demand, fulfillment, and mailing services that offer long-term cost savings by increasing efficiency, and reducing waste and duplication.

Whether you arrived at this decision as a cost savings measure, a new direction for marketing your business, or simply to do something

Recycled paper is defined by the source of the paper’s fiber:

Virgin fiber comes straight from the tree;

Pre-Consumer Waste fiber is produced from the paper mill’s leavings during conversion and production processes; and

Post-Consumer Waste is what most people consider to be the source of recycled paper. It’s fiber from paper that was previously printed and later recollected.

The EPA recommends that uncoated papers contain a minimum of 30% ‘recovered’ fibers. Coated papers are allowed a minimum of

10% due to their containing fewer fibers and more clay—a ratio that decreases the paper’s

strength, potentially to its detriment during

printing. Adding more fibers only further

weakens the paper while contributing

contaminants to the coating process. While coated papers look and feel beautiful, for the greenest

jobs, use uncoated papers whenever possible.

KB Offset’s knowledgeable staff will help take the confusion out of the paper selection process, and work with you and your designer to make green choices best suited to your particular print project.

CFL Bulb Scare

Recently there have been stories circulating around the internet pertaining to the danger posed by the mercury content of CFL bulbs (if broken). It should be noted that a very small amount of mercury is necessary for all flourescent bulbs to function; and, the amount contained within CFLs is much less than traditional tube lights. CFL bulbs use 75% less energy (and heat) than standard incandescents, while lasting up to 10 times longer. If properly handled (and recycled) they are less dangerous than the bulbs they replace. If you do break one, use the same precautions you would take when cleaning up any broken glass, and make sure the area is well ventilated for 15 minutes. More information at: epa.gov/mercury

Ask the printers...What are low VOC Inks?VOCs refer to volatile organic hydrocarbons. Low VOC inks contain less than 5 percent of these toxins. For most applications, KB Offset uses low VOC inks containing 30% vegetable oil.

to make the planet a better place to live, printers like KB, can help take the burden off of your company —providing a green solution to an otherwise wasteful component.
