This story is, in a way, an epilogue to something that started nearly two years ago.

Late in 2003 our son Nic (then aged fourteen) suffered a rather dramatic admittance to hospital. Out of nowhere Nic had been hit with a rare bone marrow disease called aplastic anaemia. His bone marrow had stopped functioning and he was in isolation for more than 8 weeks, including 6 weeks at Starship hospital where he was given a bone marrow transplant courtesy of his older brother Jamie. The transplant took place on December 23rd 2003. Nic left Starship late in January 2004 followed by a twelve month convalescence period at home.

After being in isolation so long, Nic decided that he would really like to visit the Gold Coast theme parks. Within weeks of Nic applying, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® had it all organised for us.

Nic and his two brothers, Jamie & William, did nearly every ride at three different theme parks. Most frequently used words or phrases were…. “awesome,” “that was sooo cool,” “I’m doing that one again,” “wohooo” and “Mom did that ride. Dad, you should too…”

Dad took photos. Dad carried the bags. The boys had a great, great time.

They swam, they played tennis, they shopped, they theme-parked, they grinned a lot.

The weather was great, the accommodation was great, the temperature was 20 – 23 degrees every day. Breakfast by Surfers Paradise beach at 7am was great. The sunrise was beautiful.

What more as a family can we say about the opportunity that the Make-A-Wish Foundation gave us to go away and enjoy ourselves together. As most people reading this article will identify with, when your family has gone through the ordeal of having a very sick child, you somehow adapt and cope and function. You tell yourself that you’re okay but not till you get this kind of opportunity do you realise that maybe something was missing – and you relax.

Thank you, Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Roser familyWe are making good progress

together towards achieving a better range of services for

CanTeen members nation-wide, and I have highlighted several of the most recent examples of this progress for your interest.

If anything set out below is not clear please feel free to call me and I can explain more about the particular project you are interested in. DDI. 09 308 5902 or MOB. 021 454 021.

Member Service and SupportA major advance in the level and quality of future support for members has come in the form of Board approval to appoint several new Co-ordinator positions, mainly 20 hours per week, around the country. The appointments will be put in place early in 2006 and will cover the following areas:• Patient Support Co-ordinator in

Auckland (Full time)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

Whangarei (20 hours per week)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

Hamilton (20 hours per week)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

Tauranga (20 hours per week)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

New Plymouth (20 hours per week)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

Wellington (20 hours per week)• Member Liaison Co-ordinator in

Christchurch (20 hours per week)

Clearly this is a big step for CanTeen and recognises the need for high quality member support, growth in membership and support for our current staff.

ResearchThanks to those who have already participated in the 2005/06 membership survey to identify members needs now and in the future. Workshops were held in November followed by a full survey of all our members. The fi nal date for completing the survey is February 8th. We expect to have usable results in the fi rst week of March. The results will help to design future activities and programmes as well as understanding how we can best meet members’ expectations of CanTeen.

P.O.S.G (Paediatric Oncology Steering Group)This is a Multi disciplinary Committee set up to improve the way adolescent and paediatric oncology is treated in New Zealand in the future. Over the next three years CanTeen and the Child Cancer Foundation are funding several projects created by P.O.S.G. to address the Late Effects issue, funding for specialised Adolescent Oncology nurses at the three main treatment centres, and improve data collection and dissemination. The Ministry of Health recently confi rmed its ongoing commitment to the whole programme which is great news for CanTeen and its members. You may see some publicity on this over the next month.

Patient Support StrategyMichelle Thomas, our Member Services Manager started with CanTeen in late September to develop the Patient Support Strategy process recently agreed by the Board. Michelle has a strong Health Sector background and is working with

the Cancer Control Strategy to align our activities in this area with what the Government plans to do to improve Adolescent Oncology treatment.

CanTeen ValuesThanks to those who have contributed to the Values Defi nition exercise as a result of the October and December Board meeting discussions. CanTeen is unique as an organisation and its values refl ect that uniqueness. To refresh our collective commitment to the values and “live” them is vital to our ongoing health.

WISH COMES IN A SURPRISEDELIVERY

It was a huge surprise for Tim when Oscar Kightly turned up on his door one Thursday in November. Oscar was there to deliver a new laptop, scanner, mobile phone and computer software, given to Tim by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Tim had wished for a new laptop to help with his work as secretary of the CanTeen Auckland committee. “I was working on typing the minutes for a meeting and the (old) laptop just

stopped working” he said. “It was a big surprise to have Oscar here. He’s a funny guy and a nice person.”

Oscar says he was asked by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to deliver the gifts “and I thought it was a cool thing to do for such a choice person.”

Tim was diagnosed with Leukaemia five years ago. “I’d be sick and throw up every morning and night.” He had three years of chemotherapy and has been in remission for two.

Well it’s that hectic time of year again when the weather has improved but most of us have

too much going on to get out there and enjoy it.

Yes it’s a scary prospect that Christmas and the holiday season has been and gone as it signifi es the end of another year. I hope 2005 was a year to remember, exams went well, and you enjoyed a well deserved break or if you were working at least a Christmas break!

CanTeen has made some signifi cant progress this year gone. Currently we are in the process of defi ning our values so that everyone in CanTeen knows what they mean and we can live and breathe them in everything we do. Once we have defi ned the Values we are going to go through a Strategic

Planning process which will help us to create a plan as to what and where we want to go as an organization. We will be using the information we get out of the membership survey that is happening at the moment to help form the plan.

Bandanna Week was yet again a great opportunity to get CanTeen out there in the public eye and inform more people as to what we do. The fi nal fi gures haven’t come through yet but with the new designs and the Muppets it was a great week. A big thank you needs to go to all the members and volunteers that gave up their time to make it a nationwide success.

Happy New Year

Karen MIller

Well who couldn’t be excited at the opportunity to go across the ditch to learn and build

relationships with fellow CanTeeners!! However, on every trip there are bound to be hiccups. This trip seemed to have them all before we even got to touch Australian soil. As one of the things you need to be able to do that is hold onto your passport for the whole trip. One of us seemed not to be able to do this. Hmmm this involved a wee bit of stress. You would have thought enough stress had already been created but sure enough, the same ‘one’ left her ball dress on the shuttle when disembarking at the airport. Not to worry though as although we panicked we got it back!

The CanTeen Australia Ball was held at the Crystal Palace in Sydney on the 13th August. The outside of the palace was lit up with fairy lights and the inside looked just as amazing. We looked positively gorgeous as we walked into the ‘Winter Wonderland’ ball room. Surprisingly enough, it didn’t take us long to get ready, which included re-doing hair and running round the streets of Sydney to fi nd duct tape (don’t ask). It was great to meet

members from all over the Australia and see some familiar faces again.

We attended the Member Advisory Council meeting, the Board meeting and their AGM. CanTeen in Australia aims to deliver the same services to members as we do here in New Zealand and it was great to see how they were doing and ‘compare notes.’ The networking opportunities were invaluable as we were able to further develop the relationships between Australia and NZ. It was very important to look at the Member Advisory Council, the structure of their Board and how it works, and its relevance with the current review of the NZ structure.

The trip was highly benefi cial, although completely exhausting, and as Karen puts it, “another trip to Sydney and I haven’t seen a thing.”

BP DEALER CONFERENCE 2005 – CANTEEN AUCTION

On 6 August, in conjunction with the annual BP Dealer Conference the CanTeen Auction was held. The conference and auction this year was set in the beautiful surroundings of Langkawi, Malaysia. The conference this year saw record numbers of attendees, where BP Dealers, suppliers and management representatives from all over New Zealand met for a week of business sessions, group activities, relaxing by the pool – and of course the celebrated

BP CanTeen Auction. As usual, the auction evening was a highlight of the trip for all, with celebrity compere Mark Wright setting an entertaining tone. The range of auction items was varied, with people bidding for everything from whitebait, to a day with the Emirates Team New Zealand crew. Outstanding support was shown by all, and BP is pleased to be able to provide CanTeen with a donation of $75,000.

HALF-MARATHON RAISES $30 000 FOR CANTEEN“The good news from CanTeen’s viewpoint and also from my own is that I made it. My time was just over two hours, which I was really pleased with. The fact that I won’t be able to walk for a couple of days is beside the point.”

Managing Director of Foodstuffs, Tony Carter (pictured far left) ran the Auckland Half-Marathon at the end of October to raise money for CanTeen. The amount raised from sponsorship reached over $30 000!

Ma tou raurau, Ma toku raurau, kia ora ai te tangataKia ora, my name is Michelle Thomas and I am very excited to be a part of your organisation.

My professional experiences are based mainly in the mental health sector. I have most recently managed both residential and community based mental health services in the NGO sector for the past six years. Prior to that I was situated in the ADHB, again in the mental health sector.

My educational background is based on the area of health. I have a BA in Maori Studies majoring in social work, a Post-graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation, an advanced

certifi cate in Dual Diagnosis and have recently completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Health Service Management.

I have a 7 year old daughter and enjoy touch rugby and four wheel driving. I am looking forward to meeting you all in the near future, and learning from you all.

My name is Sharon Conaboy. I have recently started working for CanTeen in Otago as the activities co-ordinator.I am married to Tony and have three teenage daughters who keep me very busy.I am really looking forward to the challenge of working along side the CanTeen members and the fun that will go along with it.I am involved with Child Cancer as a committee member and worked for two years doing administration before changing

roles and working for CanTeen.I look forward to meeting people involved in CanTeen.

Michelle Kenyon-Roberts has been with CanTeen as volunteer Co-ordinator in Taranaki for nearly a year, but has recently come on board as Member Liaison Co-ordinator, on a part-time basis.

Wow, I can’t believe that it’s been almost a year already – it must be true what they say about time fl ying when you’re having fun. It’s been quite a year, I’ve thrown myself off the top of a dam, been shot at by paintballs (well actually I hid in the tent – but they were fl ying by my head, I’m sure someone was aiming at me), painted plates, strung beads, made chocolates, fallen off a sledge, soaked in hot pools, been ice skating …the list goes on and on, all accompanied by far more lollies & pizza than can possibly be good for me. But the best bit of

the year by far has been getting to know my ‘Naki CanTeeners (and the others who’ve been on the Central Division Camps) what a fantastic bunch of young people. It’s been an honour & a privilege to have worked with you for this past year & I can’t wait to see how much more fun we can have now that I’m a “Member Liaison Co-ordinator” – bring it on!!!!

KIA ORA FROM THE DEEP SOUTH!!

Otago CanTeeners have been super-active these last couple of months, so much so that we failed to tell you guys in the last magazine exactly what we have been up to!! No worries, here’s the run-down…

August saw a bunch of Otago CanTeeners cheering on our boys at the All Blacks/South Africa game at Carisbrook. Others scrubbed up and found some fancy attire to attend a charity ball held by the Lions Club, who were raising money for Camp Quality. Three members were asked to help sing Happy Birthday to a guest, and the band was so blown away by their talent (or at least, their enthusiasm…) that they were invited to stay on stage and sing a few more!

In the fi rst week of September we met up with Southland members and had an awesome winter camp in Queenstown. Although the ‘skiing’ was sometimes more like tussock-hopping, everyone had a blast, and it was great to see members supporting each other on the slopes (especially the mammoth team effort to get an anonymous member of staff

safely to the bottom!! :) The community support was incredible this year, some members spoke on a morning radio show that was covering our trip, and we spent the weekend sporting classy Icebreaker beanies that had been donated. On the second day we had the option of skiing, helicopter-ing or horse-riding, then we all met for a spin on the Kawarau Jet boats. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make it such an awesome weekend!

On a slightly less adrenaline-pumping note; several members attended valuable ‘Relaxation and Loss’ workshops at Holdaway House, organized by Angela and facilitated by local specialists. Our famous Tuesday gatherings and over-18 coffee evenings also continue to provide a welcome excuse to hang out with CanTeen friends and not study for exams!

We welcomed Sharon Conaboy as our new Activities Coordinator in October, and, being the kind bunch that we are, threw her straight into Bandanna Week. The highlight was four incredible cyclists who raised thousands for CanTeen by busting their guts non-stop for 24 hours on

gym-bikes in the Meridian Mall. Nine Dunedin parking offi cers also recently held a head-shave for CanTeen and the Cancer Society, which was much appreciated.

And fi nally, about 45 Otago and Southland members joined in Dunedin in early November for their Annual General Meetings. On Saturday, we rode on the Taieri Gorge train to the middle of nowhere and enjoyed a BBQ beside the train tracks before getting down to business. The next morning we were treated to a cruise in the harbour before a fab lunch at Glenfalloch Gardens. A big thank-you to our tireless staff and volunteers for another year with us crazy lot!! And congratulations especially to the two new committees, I’m sure CanTeen will continue to fl ourish in Otago and Southland 2006 under your leadership.

Stay cool CanTeeners, have a fantastic summer and wear sunscreen!!

NEW ADVENTURE FOR CANTEEN AUCKLAND

From the 2nd until the 4th of December 2005 was our fi rst attempt at a relaxation weekend.

We ventured off to Rotorua on our Luxury 5 star coach. After a movie with refreshments from our on board fridge we made it to our destination.

The weekend was packed with Cruisy activities including, lion cub handling, concerts, dining, facials, hand massages and makeovers.

After feeding ourselves silly all weekend, we headed back home on Sunday night exhausted from our relaxation weekend.

On the 18th of December Auckland Division held it annual Christmas BBQ. This year we chose the beautiful wenderholm where we chilled all afternoon in the sun

after packing in the food and then burning it off with a few strong rounds of Tug O War. Thanks to our new Marquee we had heaps of shade and resting space. It was a good turn out by all including families which made the day an all round great time.

aburbaboutwintercamp

Central Division has had its

yearly winter camp. This

year was successful due

to a combination of organisation

of the timetable (from our

presidents get together),

having fantastic volunteers and

absolutely beautiful weather.

Activities at winter camp

were the usual skiing and

snowboarding. This year due

to timetabling, members were

able to make it to lessons on the

mountain, which in turn offered

support to those fi rst timers and

enabled members to develop

new skills. The overall support

among the group that went on

camp was amazing. Even those

who were at the advanced level

of skiing or snow boarding

supported those who weren’t

as good or just needed the

encouragement of taking the

next step. Back at camp for the

non-skiing and snowboarders

members took time out with

a wide range of arts, crafts

and games. This was a good

opportunity for hot pooling and

relaxing in the fi ne weather.

The volunteers were as I said

fantastic. Camps like this rely on

the volunteers to help pull the

camp together. To get members

to camp, to the amazing menu

Jeff (volunteer from Manawatu)

put together to the fi ner detailing

of hiring gear. These amazing

people are the foundation to

a good camp and from here

this is where the members can

get to know one another with

peer support, development and

empowering. Everyone that went

had a really good time and at

the end the camp was fi lled with

the most amazing feeling of a

positive atmosphere and happy

CanTeeners.

Jessie HerbertVice-President, Taranaki

Sarah and I attended the head shave

at Taranaki base hospital. What was

happening was that the childrens’

doctors had volunteered to all put their

names forward, and whoever was drawn

out had their head shaved! A poor doctor

was told it was her that was chosen, with

a petrifi ed look on her face she stepped

forward, only to learn they were joking!

And the real victim, Ruth, had to step

forward. Her colleagues promptly set to

work cutting off her lovely long locks, then

the hairdresser stepped in to shave what

was left. She actually looks quite stunning

with no hair!!

It was emotional to watch, the fact that

someone was so unselfi shly donating their

own hair to support CanTeen, and it bought

tears to my eyes as memories of my own all

too recent hair loss came fl ooding back.

A guy from the cafe, where it was held,

also stepped forward, to loud cheering

from his fellow workmates, and promptly

had his beautiful long curls shaved off!!

This event raised over $1000 for canteen,

and I personally am very thankful to these

two for so unselfi shly doing what they did.

Well what a busy year…. Where to start? First off everyone on committee has worked really

hard all year round organising activities, camps, and fundraisers. Our winter camp down to Methven was a huge success with everyone enjoying themselves. Rest and relaxation camp was another huge success, this time in Kaikoura. My personal favourite was the whale watching. A lot of organizing went into both these camps, so thank to everyone who helped out.

Some others and I are in the midst of organising a mystery bus trip, for our summer camp. Also we had our Christmas party last weekend, and a huge thanks goes out to Keryn for organising that. We started off with a barbeque at the offi ce then went punting and kayaking down the Avon, with the punt getting a lot of

attention as we had Santa with us. Of course one of our major fundraisers which happens every year is Bandanna week. We had a lot of support this year and appreciate it all. Thanks to everyone that helped out.

The major thing that happened to me this year was being appointed the new president only a few months ago. So far I am really enjoying the position, and look forward to making the most of it. I would like to say a huge thanks to the committee for helping me with the new position, especially Keryn, our very special Vice President. I would not have been able to do it without all the support everyone has given me, so thanks. My fi rst major job as President was to look after everything while Koral went away to get married along with the others. We learnt the

hard way that Koral does a lot of behind the scenes work that doesn’t really get noticed.

Through this time we had the passing of one of our members … Tom Cross, who we all miss dearly. We also wish to pass on our condolences to Nikki and Paul and the rest of the family. This is never an easy time, but we got through it with CanTeen spirit supporting, developing and empowering each other. Thanks again for everyone’s help,

AngelaPresident, Canterbury

HEY BOYS AND GIRLS….

Well I am back from camp, again. Had such an amazing summer, even better than last year! Got to see my babies again which was

great, had new babies this year…. Well if you could call boy obsessed 15 year olds babies. They were the best though and gave me the most incredible experiences of my life, made the most wonderful memories and love them all. Also got to see friends from last year and make new friends, I loved it. And getting to spend the summer with your best friends is the most amazing gift in the world.

But it is also good to be back and into CanTeen… I missed my Naki CanTeeners, A LOT while I was halfway across the world. But I have to say the CanTeen Magazines helped big time. So thanks for that. Also getting mail from CanTeen Taranaki and knowing that everything was under control while I was away was a good feeling. So thanks Michelle for looking after everyone for me while I was gone, to Jessie and Grete for stepping up and taking over my responsibilities, to the committee for supporting them, and to all the members for making me proud and having lots of fun while I was away. So it’s great to be back and getting amongst it all again.

Well the fi rst thing I had after arriving home was a meeting, like the next day too, always my luck! But Michelle did bring skittles so it was worth it and to catch up with everyone topped it off. Well then we were straight into organising Bandanna Week, which went amazingly this year. So thanks to everyone that helped out, you did a fantastic job and I am proud of you all.

Recently we had a Starbucks night, which is going to become a regular thing which I think is great, a chance for people to catch up and just hang out and chat. Plus who could pass up the offer of a good frappachino??

Coming up we have paintball, which I am excited for. Am keeping my fi ngers crossed that I am on Stevens team tho..… I hear he has experience in the game and need someone to protect me when I run screaming like a girl. Who knows I might surprise myself, maybe I was some kind of agent, war hero, or sniper in a past life. Will have to let you know about that.

Other than that we are just organising our Christmas party, so a few surprises are in store for the canteeners on that one. So whatever it is, it will be out of this world and fi lled with fun cause that’s what we are knowing for in the Naki…. right??Well I hope all is well in everyone’s bubble world…..Can’t wait to hear what you have all been up toTake care and remember to smile, it makes people wonder what you have been up toMiss and thinking of you allBig Hugs

Love Rachel

We had a bit of a mad head shaving time here in Taranaki over Bandanna Week and would like to say a huge thank you to all those who lost their locks for us. They were

Bobbi Brogden, Dr Ruth Senturia-Harris, Calvin Webb & Mary McManaway. It was an awesome effort & was greatly appreciated by every member of CanTeen Taranaki.

What’s it like in Vermont?

Page 7: Summer 2006

On Friday 26th August at 1pm, the mighty engines roared as three vans set off on their adventurous weekend to Ohakune for Central Division Winter Camp, where great escapades & fun are had by all.

After a few pickups on the way the vans from Wellington were underway to meet up with the van from Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki to meet up at the Venture lodge in Ohakune who once again provided an awesome place for rest while not cruising down the mountain.

Once all had arrived on Friday night, and been fed the almighty crew of 44 broke into groups of their skill level for the next day on the mountain to play games and get to know each other and eventually grab their rental gear kindly donated once again from The Ski Shed. After a few of us hit the spa and Singstar, eyes became droopy and all hit the sack as our kind volunteers Paul and Geoff would be providing just one of the many great meals they made at 6.30am the next morning so we could all leave by 8am.

As we all slowly arose to the smell of bacon and eggs on Saturday, the excitement began brewing and a great day was had by all of those on the mountain whether boarding, skiing, or spending a lot of time on their butt. After lunch some headed back down the mountain to have fun at the lodge making chocolate and having spas at the hot pools, while the rest of us continued with gaining skills on the mountain (thanks to a brilliant hot Swedish female instructor). As the day came to an end we headed to the lodge to shower, spa and eat a fabulous roast dinner followed by a

new haka and a win for the All Blacks (or so Hamish was told after sleeping through the second half ). Once again the tired bodies hit the hay.

Sun came around in no time, with half the crew heading back up the hill for a morning of sun drenched mountain fun and the other half went and had fun at the local hot pools. When everyone had returned for lunch, clean

up and goodbyes, there were happy faces all around and a feeling of a wonderful weekend was had by all. Vans packed, numbers swapped, and ‘see ya next times’ said then each area headed off home with great memories from another awesome CanTeen camp. To cap the weekend off, the Wellington vans were entertained the whole way home thanks to the walky-talkies provided for communication. The bubble van cruised in fi rst place to the offi ce in Newtown. Parents picked up all even though many wished the weekend was not over.

Many new friendships were made and great memories will be remembered by all. Thanks to P-Dog, Mike, Sean, G-Unit, Michelle, Geoff and Paul for making such a wonderful weekend work so well. Bring on next year!

On the 25th of September a small group of CanTeeners enjoyed an educational session on journaling at the CanTeen offi ce in Wellington. They learnt that we are all creative and a few techniques to help get the

creative juices fl owing. Afterwards they enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea of crackers and cheese and strawberries dipped in chocolate.

September ActivityOn the last day of October about 19 Wellington members headed off to the bungy in Courtenay Place for some action. It was awesome being up in the air spinning and turning , reversing and looking over some parts of Wellington. There were a few screams particularly when Michael and Penny went up for the last ride (Hamish even heard it from where he was working). Afterwards we crossed the road heading off to Mr Bun for some food and drinks and had a chat.

October ActivityOn the 30th of October an artistic bunch of Wellington CanTeeners went to The Swish Dish in Petone to create ceramic masterpieces. Led on by Mike one of our trusty volunteers, the members dove into painting and creating their masterpieces. It was commented that this was the quietest activity CanTeen Wellington has had in a long time – due to the intense concentration of everybody on their art work. As you can see they created some lovely pieces of work.

GISBORNE – BREAKING TILES AND BANDANNA WEEK

Saturday the 8th of October consisted of; a morning on the streets of Gisborne, wearing Muppet posters and trying all our selling techniques to sell all the bandannas we possibly could!

This was followed by a spot of lunch then off to an afternoon activity. Mosaic Moments is where we went to get a little arty. We chose what we were going to make, either a set of coasters or a hanging

ball or a bigger tile. Once we all got our patterns and colours chosen we were on our way to creating our masterpieces. After breaking tiles and getting glue stuff all over our fi ngers for a few hours - Wow! They all looked so good and all so different. It was a neat activity that we all enjoyed.

MINI-PUTT IN TAURANGA

On Saturday the 25th of June, CanTeeners from the Waikato/East Cape/BOP Division joined together in Tauranga for a day of Mini Putt and

Food. First we all meet at the movies as we decided to go and see a movie, Madagascar, instead of Mini Putt because it was raining. So we cued up and when we fi nally got to the front of the line we found that it was all sold out! BUMMER!

Luckily while we’d been queuing up the sky had cleared, so off to Mini Putt we went. We were all divided evenly into teams. While we played it got cloudy again but thankfully only rained for a few minutes. We then went to McDonalds for a feed. There we ate and got given prizes for the lowest scoring team, highest scoring team, worst individual scorer (no hard feelings Anna!) and best individual scorer. The team that I was in got the prize for the worst scoring team and got given a golf ball each! Also in our teams we had a quiz about CanTeen. So over all it was a really fun day and I’m glad I went. I’m looking forward to the next CanTeen activity, it should be awesome!

SCAVENGER HUNTOn Saturday whenever it was; in the mid to late after noon… or make that early afternoon in the beautiful sun shine I thought to myself what better way to spend a great day with CanTeen *cough* anyway... we all ended up at the Hamilton gardens. It was for lunch so that’s always a plus and a sure way to get JAMES there. After that we got sorted into three groups for a little tiki tour around the gardens to collect parts of bandannas and solve random clues after running around for about an hour from one end of the place to the other, in and out fi nding them silly things!! We all met back at the start to give out the prizes for fair play and to ME !! and my team for coming 1st shoot GUYS and girl I think…well I’d like to say thank you to Susan and Steph for a great fun fi lled afternoon, cheers.

KIA ORA Nga mihi o te wa (greeting to all)Here’s a little up date on what we have been happening (or not happening) in the Waikato Division for the past few months.

Well Sandie came up with the awesome idea to have a $5 Tirau scrounge, which sounded like it would have been a great activity; however no body could make it!!! So we changed dates, even changed the time but still no one came. Anyways let’s leave that in the past.

Next was bowling with CCF in Tauranga and Hamilton. People went to this one, it was lots of fun and it was very good to see CCF coming together with CanTeen.

Winter camp was, like always, lots of fun, and well I couldn’t go but the feedback was really, really good… and I’ve heard that there was lots and lots of free stuff. (I

should’ve come!!!) Anyways selling bandanas, it was one

of the best years, because everything was planned beforehand and nothing was left to chance. I also had the opportunity to speak about Bandanna Week in Maori, to a Maori school which was a big, big thing for us!!!

Now on to Sandie’s wedding. For those of you who don’t know Sandie is getting married at the end of this month, the 26th of November to be exact, anyways she’s looking forward to it, counting down the days until she becomes Mrs Fransen. We are all looking forward it.

WINTER CAMP ‘05 WAS SOOOO AWESOME!

It was held on the 23-25th of September at Mount Ruapehu. The CanTeeners were from not only the Waikato/BOP/

East Cape division, but from the Auckland division too. From the day we arrived at Slalom Lodge I knew that we were all going to have an awesome weekend. We arrived at the camp late Friday night when it was pitch black, so none of us knew what the camp looked liked.

Though we found out what it looked like on Saturday morning when we were all up at 6:30am! I (and most defi nitely all the rest of the CanTeeners) awoke to the sound on Brett screaming at us down the hallway to wake up. We were all awake after that for sure. After brekkie it was off to Mount Ruapehu to hit the slopes. Weather wise, we couldn’t have asked or a better day. Once up the mountain we were divided into 2 group, skiers and snowboarders. Then from there we were divided into our groups of skiing or snowboarding ability. That night we were all exhausted after a big day on the slopes

(most of us looking pretty sunburnt too!). Then at night we had a remembrance

night were we all wrote a message or whatever on the balloon and then with some soothing music in the background, we all released them into the air on the count of 3. Also that night we had a disco and some fun performances, including ‘Ranglers’ dance that was pretty wild and got the crowed going.

The next day, Sunday, was much the same as the day before, up early and then up the slopes. Though on Sunday we only skied half a day as we had to leave time for travelling back to Hamilton and Auckland, depending which division you were from.

Over all I think it was a really enjoyable camp and every one was great and got along well. Big thanks to the staff at Slalom Lodge, Adventures Within, all the CanTeeners who came along, Sandie, the bus drivers and all the Volunteers. Without you all, this camp wouldn’t have been possible so a big thanks to you all!

Our thoughts and wishes at this time go to Nicky and Paul, his parents and to his Brother and Sister, Sam and Lucy as well as his extended family and many friends.

Tom you will be missed by all of us here at CanTeen. You have managed to touch everyone of our hearts in some very special ways; you have really inspired us so so much.
