One of the most promising recent developments in the field is that of devices consisting of large arrays (O(103 )) of tiny APD’s packed over a small area (O(1 mm2 )) and operated in a limited Geiger mode [16]. Among different names used for this class of photodetectors, “PPD” (for “Pixelized Photon Detector”) is most widely accepted (formerly “SiPM”). (PDG Review section )
